PIN LIFTER FOR GAR COUPLINGS.
Application filed December 27, 1921.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, KVILLIAM J. KNOX, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Dubois, in the county of Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have made a new and useful Couplings, fication.
The invention relates to pin lifters for car couplers. It has for itsmain objects the provision of an improved cheap, simple construction; (1) which cannot be disengaged from the coupler lock pin without removing the rocker shaft (which is bolted orotherwise more or less perma nently secured to the car body) from such car body; (2) which, aside from. the securing brackets, can be made throughout from one size of ordinary merchant rod; and which can be easily assembled and applied existing car constructions having the standard Jane-y coupler. One embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a partial plan view at the end of a car with the uncoupling or lifting device in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a partial end view of the construction of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are side elevations of the coupler and the pin lifting device, Fig. 3 showing the parts in locked position and Fig. 4 in unlocked position with the lock pin of the coupler in its uppermost position. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the connecting pin. And Fig. 7 is a plan View of the arm at the end of the rocker shaft.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the end of a car structure provided with a pair of brackets 2, 3, bolted or otherwise secured to the car body. 4 is a coupler of the Janey type having the usual lock pin 5, such lock pin having an interlocking engagement at its lower end in the coupler cavity (not shown but common in couplers of this type) to prevent the entire withdrawal of the pin from the coupler, Fig. 4 showing the lock pin at the upper limit to which its stop means permits it to go. The coupler rocker shaft which is carried by the brackets 2- and 3 is made up of ordinary round bar iron and comprises the horizontal portion 6, the handle 7, and the lifting arm 8 provided at its end with the eye 9, such eye being somewhat elongated as indicated in Fig. 7. The coupler lock pin 5 is provided with an eye 10 and between this eye and the eye 9 of Invention in Pin Lifters for Gar of which the following is a speciconnecting U pin device of very Serial No. 525,221.}
the lifting arm is a U of the device.
The connecting pin comprises the vertical upper end and the 7 end and the inclined leg 14.
The parts are assembled, before the brackets 2 and 3 are applied to the car, the
eye 9 in the arm 8 and then through the eye 10 of the lock pin 5. The brackets 2 are now applied to the car. The space at 15 on the connecting pin (Fig. 5) is slightly wider than the diameter of the rod from which the rod 6, 8 is made while the space at 16 is slightly greater than the combined diameters of the rod 6, 8 and that'of' the material of the eye 10; which permits the ready assembling as above described.
When the parts'are assembled and the rod 6 secured to the car, the coupler lock pin, the
U connecting pin and the arm 8 cannot be disconnected. The upward movement of the pin 5 is limited by the engagement of its lower end in the coupler cavity, so that with such pin held in its upper position, it cannot be disengaged from the leg 14 of the connecting pin because of the length of such leg, extending up as it does, to a point adjacent the head 12. The connections between eyes 9 and 10 are such that free relative movement is permitted, so that the coupler may move sidewise, longitudinally and upand down without any binding of or injury to any of the connecting parts.
The elongated eye 9 contributes to this freedom of movement. The parts are all of simple construction, and the rocker shaft and connecting pin may be cheaply made from ordinary round iron by bending and forging. Other advantages incident to thestructure will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art.
What I claim is:
1. In combination in a lifting or release device for the lock, pin of a coupler having a limited upward movement, a rock shaft adapted to be secured to a car body and pro vided at its inner end with a lifting arm having a limited downward movement and having at its free end an eye, a connecting pin having a vertical portion headed at its upper end extending through the eye and having its lower portion recurved for passing through the eye of the coupler lock pin,
shaped connecting pin, which isthe particularly novel feature being slipped through the 7 2. The combination with a coupler of the Janey type having a lock pin with a limited upward movement and an eye at its upper end, and a rock shaft having a lifting arm with. a limited downward movement and with a horizontal eye at its free end, of a U shape connecting pin having one leg provided with a head and extending through said horizontal eye and with its bent portion engaging the eye of said lock pin, the free leg of the connecting pin being substantially as long as theother leg and being inclined away from such other leg.
3. The combination with a coupler of the J aney type having alock pin with a limited upward movement and an eye at its upper end, and a rock shaft having a lifting arm with a limited Ilownward movement and with a horizontal eye at its free end, of a connecting pin for the two eyes comprising a vertical leg provided with a head at its upper end, a partial eye portion at the lower end. of such leg and a second leg extending upwardly to a point adjacent the head and inclined away from; the vertical leg, and being of such length that said second leg still engages the eye oi": the lock pin when such pin is at its upper limit of movement and the lifting arm is at its lower limit of movement.
