Be it known that I, CHARLES AUGUSTUS Dn RIGNE, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Los Angeles, in the county'of Los Angeles and State of California,fhave in-y vented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump Plungers; and I do declare the fol# lowing to be a full, clear, and exact descrip-` tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilledv in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. f.
This invention relates to an improved plunger which is especially designed for use in pneumatic pumps of the class used for inflating vehicle tires and the like.v v
The principal object of the invention is to generally improve upon plungers of ythis class by providing one, embodying a head of novel construction, the same being composed of comparatively few and inexpensive parts which are capable of rapid separation in order to make the repairs and replacements whenever necessary.' y f More specifically speaking, it is one of the objects of the invention to provide a plunger head which has a removable sleeve on its lower end formed with a groove with which the hooked free ends of the radial arms of a spring abutment are engaged.

In the drawings, the letter B designates an air pump barrel or cylinder having a base A at its lower end with a valved flexible conduit C leading from the usual passage in the base which has communication with the cylinder. Slidable in the cylinder is the plunger, comprising a rod R having a head H on its lower end and a handle G on its upper end. y

As here shown, it has detachable threadedk ,connection with the lower end of the .rod and that portion adjacent the connection is formed with the plurality of openings 1 having communication with the upper chamber in the cylinder. Adjacent this'apertured partition 2 and below this "partition it is formed with a reduced externally screw-y threaded part 3 in whichv a eheck'valve 4 is arranged. This valvecooperates with the central port in thepartition 2 and a coiled spring 5 serves tomaintain it closed. As before suggested, it is desirable to provide a .novel anchor or abutment which is to be associated with`the` lower end of the coiled spring. This abutment is generally indicated by the numeral 6 and, in its preferred form, comprises acup 7 in which the lower end of the spring received and a plurality of radial arms 8 which have their outer ends bent to form hooks 9,designed fora reception in a circumferential groove 10` formed at the bottom `of the sleevel `11 'A which is threaded onto the reduced portion of the body as shown. It is to be noted that by reducing the lower portion of the body `as described, a shoulder 12 is formed and packing members 13 are arranged on the reduced part 3 above the upper end of the aforesaid sleeve, said packing members being tightly clamped against the shoulder by means of a nut 14C which is arranged on the reduced portion of the body.

From the foregoing description it is manifest that I have devised an extremely novel and practical plunger which is unique, simple in construction, and such as to perinitlthc packing inembers,;or any other do-y tails `which may need to be repaired., to be easily and readily replaced. The con-- struction. isl such as to insure eilectiveness or' operation and to render the plunger inexpensive to both the manufacturer and Vthe user. Other teatures and advantages have also been made clear from the foregoing description. Consequently, by carefully considering the description in connection with the drawings, persons familiar with devices of this class will doubtless be able to obtain an understandingof the invention.
