Description
Patented Mar. 13, 1923.
UNITED :STATES I CLARENCE E.AOGDE1\T, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
y `ELECTRIC CONTROLLER.
Application :ned May ys1,
To all whom t may concern.' o
kBe it known thatl, CLARENCE E. OGDEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cincinnati, in the countyj-of Hamilton, State of Ohio, havek invented rcertain new and useful Improvements in Electricy `Controllers, of which the, following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the4 accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to electrick controllers.
The principal object `of the lpresent invention is to provide in an electric controller, quick movement and positive stop mechanism, whereby the contact segments `are caused to move quicklyfrom speed to speed VKand to .assume a definite position at all times.
The slow movement of the contact `segments from speed to speed results in arcing between the contacts and consequent damage thereto. A similar damage results from 'A leaving the controller segments in imperfeet contact with the controller lingers. It" is to overcome those diiiicul'ties, that the y f drum is rotated to extreme position, as ilpresent invention is principally designed. f A further objject of the invention is to provide 1n connection `with quick movement any convenient position for the removal and replacement of contact plates, without the derangemen-t of said mechanism.
Other `objects of this invention will appear from the following detailed description thereof, taken in connection with theg accompanying drawings. In vthevdrawings: y
Figure 1 is a perspective ofia controller `constructed in accordance with this invention, kthe casing being broken away to show the quick movement and positive stop mechanism.
Figure 2 [is a similar view of a portion of the controller, the parts bein'g'in different relation. v I `j The numeral 1 indicates the casing of an electric controller in which a contact drum shaft 2 is rotatably mounted in the usual manner. Mounted on 'the shaft 2 are contact segments 3 having replaceable Contact plates tsecured thereto by means of screws 5 or other suitable means. The contact plates yt are arranged to make Contact with fingers 6 in accordance with the usual con- 1919. serial No. 301,045.
struction. Rigidlymounted on ythe'shaft 2 i is a plate 7, a segment of the periphery of which is provided. with alternating points 8 and recesses 9.- The outer'face of the plate is rovided with abutments or shouldersv'lO.
otatably mounted on the shaft 2' is a VThe outer endof the bushing 11 is square as shown', and serves as a mounting fory the controller handle 13. The end plate 14l of 'the casing 1 is provided on itsy inner face,
with a socket 15, Varranged to receive a steel"4 kball `16.
A compression spring 17 forces the ball 16 against the periphery of the 'plate 7.
In order to adapt the plate 7 to a controller having replaceablecontact plates, therm periphery of the said plate, .oppositethe segment havin the points 8 and recesses 9, is provided with a surface 1,8 arranged to retain the balll in the socket whenthe lustratedvin Figure 2, for theremovalof contact plates normally located on the bottom of the drum.
The operation of the device is as follows:
..85 The movement of the handle 13 in either direction `does not actuate the controller i to make the next contacts, the space between the shoulders 10 on the plate 7 permitting such movement without corresponding ing series of contacts in either direction is similarly effected, and as will be understood, this instantaneous making and breaking of the contacts minimizes the drawing of arcs between the contacts and thus reduces the consequent wear and injury thereto.
As will be seen, furthermore, by reason of the surface 18 on the plate 7, all of the contact plates of the drum may be replaced movement of the handle 13.y yEach succeedwithout the derangement of any of the parts of the quick movement and positive stop mechanism.
A ,further object achieved by the present invention is the elimination of notches or similar devices from the casing for indicating the correct positions of the controller handle, the positive stop in definite positions being achieved by the plate and spring pressed ball mechanism above described.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In an electric controller in combination with a rotatable member, a plate mounted with, and arranged to actuate said member, alternating points and depressions on the periphery of said plate, a member mounted adjacent said plate, means for pressing said member against the periphery of said plate, whereby said member is caused to actuate said plate when either ot the points on the periphery thereof is eccentricall positioned with reference thereto, where y said rotatable member is instan taneously rotated to and secured in definite positions, shoulders on the face of said plate,
an operating member loosely mounted in connection with said rotatable member, a finger operable by said operating member between said shoulders and arranged to rotate said plate eccentrically to position the respective points with respect to said compressed member, the space between said shoulders being sufiicient to permit movement of said plate by said member independently of said operating member.
2. In an electric cont-roller in combination with av rotatable member, a plate mounted with, and arranged to actuatevsaid member, alternating points and depressions on the periphery of said plate, a ball mount ed adjacent said plate, means for pressing said ball against the periphery of said plate,
whereby said ball is caused to aetuate saidv plate when either' of the points on the periphery thereof is eccentrically positioned with reference thereto, whereby said rotatable membcr is instantaneously rotated to and secured in definite positions, shoulders on the face of said plate, an operatingr member loosely mounted in connection with said rotatable member, a finger operable by said operating member between said shoulders and arranged to rotate said plate eccentrically to position the respective points with respect to said ball, the space between said shoulders being sufiicient to permit movement of said plate by said ball independently of said operating member.
3. In an electric. controller, in combination with the casing, a shaft rotatably mounted in said casing, a contact drum mounted on said shaft and contact fingers mounted in the casing, a plate rigidly mounted on said shaft, alternating points and depressions on the periphery of said plate, a member mounted adjacent said plate, means for pressing said member against the periphery of said plate, whereby said member is caused to actuate said plate when either of the points on the periphery there of is eceentrically positioned with reference thereto, whereby said drum is instantaneously rotated to and secured in definite positions to make desired contacts, shouldeis on the face of said plate, a handle loosely mounted on said shaft, a finger operable by said handle between said shoulders, and arranged to. rotate said plate eccentrically to position the respective points with respect to said compressed member, the space between said shoulders being sufiicient to permit movement of said plate by said member independently of said handle.
4. In an electric controller, in combination with the casing, a shaft rotatably mounted in said casing, a contact drum mounted on said shaft and contact fingers mounted in the casing, a plate rigidly mounted on said shaft, alternating oints and depressions on the periphery o said plate, a ball mounted in said casing, means for pressing said ball against the periphery of said plate, whereby said ball is caused to actuate said plate when either of the points on the periphery thereof is eccentric-ally positioned with reference thereto, whereby said drum is instantaneously rotated to and secured in definite positions to make desired contacts, shoulders on the face of said plate, a handle loosely mounted on said shaft, a finger operable by said han dle between said shoulders, and arranged to rotate said plate eccentrieally to position the respective points with respectto said ball, t-he space between said shoulders being suicient to permit movement of said plate by said ball independently of said handle.
