IMPROVEMENT IN REVQLVING STOOLS OR CHAIRS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,806, dated November 18, 1873; application filed v September 13, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB J. VOLLRATH, of Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and'in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Revolving Stools or Chairs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the several parts, detached. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on a central line; and Fig. 3 is a plan view, showing the hub of the chair or stool top.

Letters of like naine and kind refer to like parts in each of the gures.

My invention relates tothe construction of the parts forming a revolving stool or chair top, whereby a strong and secure union lcan be made between them all, and the finished stool or chair adapted for its special use in the best manner; and to this end it consists of the stool or chair top having a raised flange or rim, a groove upon its upper surface, and a hollow hub in the center, and the spider, having a grooved under surface extending upon and over the ange and the groove in the top of the frame, and also in uniting the parts by a pivotal screw-bolt.

In the annexed drawing, the chair or stool frame is indicated by Athe spider by B. On

this frame is a circular rib or ilange, A', with a hollow hub, A, and the whole is usually made of cast-iron and in one piece. This raised surface may be of any relative diameter to thc top of the frame, as may be found necessary for use in the different styles of chairs or stools to which it may be adapted. In the central part of this hub is an aperture, O, which diminishes in diameter from top to bottom, and through which the pivotal bolt D passes when the several parts of the stool or chair top are united in position for use. This aperture is not a perfect circle, but has on one side a plane face, as at C', while the other portion of the aperture is circular. The

Y bolt D is made of like form-that is, it tapers from head to end, and in a horizontal section one side is a plane face and the rest of the outline circular. This peculiarity of shape and construction adapts the bolt to be fitted into the aperture O, so that it cannot easily. be shaken or jarred out of position. On the un der side or surface of the spider, as at b, is a groove. When the spider is in position upon the frame, this groove ts upon and over the ila-nge A', and also covers the groove a. The central aperture in the spider is adapted to fit exactly upon the hub of the frame, which thus constitutes the pivot on which the spider is turned.

The relative construction of these parts, with all the detail and especial feature above described, is such that when the spider is affixed to, upon, and over the frame by means of the bolt secured by the nut d, the parts are not only fastened strongly in position/but the spider, which carrying the seat in the usual Way, will revolve in the easiest manner. These ends are not only accomplished, but the whole device, as thus made, is so strong and simple that it cannot easily break or get out of order.

When ready for use, the chair or stool legs are placed in the sockets, as at a', and secured in any usual and desirable manner.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1. The revolving stool or chair top A, having the raised rim or ange, the groove, and the central hollow hub, combined with the spider B, having a groove onits under surface and a central aperture, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.

2. The top A, constructed as described, and spider B, combined therewith and united by the bolt D and nut d, in the manner set forth.
