Fnnninnon lil.
mary obj ect is to reduce thev volume'capacity4 of-,avalve by providing means for automatically arresting` the opening movement of the valve actuating stem before the valve is permitted to reach full open position...
Another. object of the invention is to provide variable means for arrestingthe. opening movement of the valvestem, in order that the valve may be halted at different points in its movement. from closed to coinplete open position.
further object of the invention is to so construct the valve arresting` means that the same may be applied to different types of valves without requiring material changes in the construction and arrangement of the valve parts.
Other objects of this invention are: to provide a device of this character adaptable to valves of standard construction, comprising few parts, simple in design, and efiicient in operation.
With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resices in the construction, combination and arrangement vof parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, .in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures, of which:
Fig. l is a view partly in vertical section. of a valve having our invention applied thereto;
2 is a perspective view showing the volume reducing cap disengaged from the valve body to expose parts carried by the valve stem and normally contained within said cap:
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through a por- State of New.
tion of. a, valvc-having a modilied form of our invention applied thereto; and
Fig. 4 is. a perspective view of parts shown in Fig, 3.
InI the illust-rated embodiment character,- izing this invention we have showna valve including a rotary valve stem of the rising type, comprising a valve body 5,.valve bonnet 6, valve stem 7, and valve bonnet cap 8..
As: is usual in valves of this type, the` lower portion of the valve stem yis threaded lthroug'gh the bonnet as indicated at` 9, ,while the upper end of the stein is equipped with a suitable handle lO.v The valve proper is not showin,
and the' valve may be of the globe, gate, or angle type. commonly employed inconnectionwith rotaryrisingvalve stems, as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings.
ln applyingV our. invention to a valve of the type above referred to we provide a cap ll, the lower end of which is open and threadedly engagedgwith the upper end of' the-bonnet capS, asindicatedat l2. The upper end of the cap ll, which we will hereinafter term the. volume reducing cap, is apertured cent'ally to permit of the passage of the valve stem therethrough and its top is spaced an appreciable distance from the top of the bonnet cap. At a point immediately above said bonnet cap 8 the valve stem 7 is provided with va fixed washer-seat 13, on which a plurality of removable wash ers lll are adapted to be supported. The arrangement is 4such that the amount of clearance between the outer or uppermost washer 'may be varied by increasing or de creasing the number of washers.
ln practice, the valve stein when rotated in a valve opening direction rises vertically carrying with it the washers la, which are adapted to seat against the top of the volume reducing cap ll, thus arresting further rotation of the stem and halting the opening movement of the valve before the latter reaches full. open position. By varying the number of washers la, to advance or retard the time of contact between the outermost washer and the cap ll, the extent to which the valve may be opened is regulated.
In Fig. 3, wherein a vniodiication of the invention is shown, the valve stem T is of the rotary nonrising type. and the portion thereof which extends into the volume re ducing cap ll is threaded as at l2 to receive thereon a movable washer-sea* on which the Washers 14 are arranged. To prevent rotation of the Washer-seat 13 with the valve stem, said seat is formed with vertical grooves 15 receiving therein complemental vertical ribs 16 projecting from the inner Wall of the cap 11.
In the operation of this type of valve, when the valve stem 7 is rotated in a valve opening direction, the Washer-seat 13 moves vertically thereon until the uppermost Washer 14 seats against the top of the cap 11.
F rom the foregoing it is apparent that We have designed a volume reducing means readily adaptable to various types of valves, eliminating.;` the inherent deficiencies of those now in use, eiiicient in operation, simple in construction, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
Although in the foregoing, certain ele* ments may have been set forth as best adapted to perform the functions allotted to them, nevertheless, it is to be understood that various yminor changes as to form, substance, etc., may be resorted to Within the scope of the appended claims Without departing from or sacrificing any of the principles of this invention.
Having thus described our invention, and without enumerating variations and equivalents, What We desire protected by Letters Patent is as set forth in the following claims:
1. In a reducing` valve, the combination With a valve, valve body, and valve stem, of a cap attached to said body and receiving` the stem therethrough, and means carried by the stem Within the cap and movable into engagement with the latter to arrest the opening movement of the valve before it reaches full open position, said means consisting of a stop member composed of a plucomplementary stops disposed to be brought y into abutting engagement by movement of the valve to open posit-ion, one of said stops being variable in size to regulate the extent to which the valve may be opened.
l. The combination with a valve; of a stop comprising members variable in' number to regulate the extent to which the valve may be opened.
