Description

Feb. 27, 11923. 11,446,604
T. L. WENTWORTH v HAT DIE Filed Apr. 5, 1920 I 4/ HI l U 7 w 917 Patented 27, 1923 Application filed April To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, THOMAS L. WENT- won'rH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of h iilwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat Dies, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The present invention relates t certain new and useful improvements in hat dies and has for one of its objects to provide means for automatically closing the (lie about the hat being formed.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a hatdie having sectional female member, the sections of which are simultaneously moved inwardly about the male member to press the material inserted therebetween and conform the same with the contour of the die.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a hat die in which the female member thereof is provided with means for readily moving the same away from the male member to permit the ready removal of hat that has been previously formed.
it till further object of this invention is to provide a hat die of the class described which will be of comparatively simple construction and emcient in operation and one which may be readily utilized in shaping articles other than hats.
With the above and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claim, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing 1 have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Fig. l, is a complete view of my improved hat die with the male and female members thereof in cross section, said view being taken on the plane indicated by the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the hat die proper illustrating the same as in operative posit on with the hat removed for the purpose of illustration said view being taken on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing my invention may be said to generally consist of the die proper inclu l the male female member, means for mowing the female member to and from the sale member, means for expanding the f= .le member upon movement away from the male member and for contracting the female member upon movement toward the male member.
The male member is formed with a base portion 5 having a central upstanding pro- I ction 6 which has its contour corresponding with the shape of the hat it is desired to form with my improved hat die. The base portion 5 where the same surrounds the base the projection 6 is curved or otherw e shaped as at 7 to correspond with the style of rim it is desired to form, and the projection 6 has a part 8 thereof removable that when the projection is of the shape depicted in Fig. 1 with its base of less diameter than its outer portion, the hat being formed may be readily removed from the projection 6.
T he female member consists of a plurality of sections or se ments 9, which when placed together form. an annular or ring-like memher the inner periphery of which is shaped to conform with the contour of the projection 6 and the bottom portion of which is shaped to conform with the rimportion 7 of the base The female member is movable to and from the male member to press and shape suitable material, designated as at 10 therebetween to form the completed or shaped hat, which means consists of a disc 0 plate 11 connected with the sections 9 of the female member, as will be later nescribet and connected by means of a plunger 12 with any suitable mechanism for moving the same toward and away from the male member.
Centrally secured to each section 9 by means of a securing screw 13 and dowel ii. is a cam member or lug 15 having its upper face inclined downwardly and outwardly and engageable with a correspondingly inclined face of a cam member or lug 16 projecting downwardly from the disc or plate 11. As many cam members 16 are provided as there are cam members 15, and the adj acent cain members 15 and16 are connected together by pairs of connecting links 17 having their inner ends pivotally secured as at 18 to the cam member 15 and pivotally connected as at 19 to cam member'16. The pivots 19 pass through elongated apertures 20 in the connecting links 17 to permit the ready inward movement of the sections 9 and the cam members 15 carried thereby under the forceexerted by the downward pressure on the plunger 12. From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which an invention of this character appertains that he operation of my improved hat die is 2: follows: 1
line segment or section 8 is placed in position with the projection 6 the material 10 disposed thereover, when the plunger 12is caused to be movedtoward the base. As the sections 9 will be hanging from the lugs 16 of the disc 12 by means of'the links .17,- the sections will be spaced apart so that their inner face will be outwardly of the widest part otthe projection 6, and when the plunger is moved downwardly and the bottom of the sections engage the base 5, the inclined faces "of the cam members 15 and 16 will cause the sections to move inwardly'and close about the projection 6. This operation firmly secures ,the, material 10 between the male and female members and tl'lI1S1 Sl121P6S the same to conform with the contour of said members. v
After the hat has been shaped, the plunger 12 is moved away from the die and the sections 9 moved to the position depicted, in dotted lines in Figure 1, when the completed projectinglug carried by the ,presser plate in line with each cam member and having an upwardly andinwardly incllned cam face engageableiwith the inclinedrface of the adjacentcam member, and-link members connecting the adjacent loam members and projecting lugs, whereby movement of the presser plate toward the male member when said sections bear against the male member results in the sections of the female member being closed about thelmaleimemben.
* In testimony whereof-,1 affix my signature.
. THOMAS L. WENTlVORTH.
