ROLLER CHUCK.
Application filed April G, 1922.
/'o all fra/Lomz't may concern Be it known that we, Josnrrr E. BitiNns and .Moon l. Bosnia, citizens of the United `States` and' residents of Pittsburgh and Mount Qliver, respectively, both in the county of Allegheny and State of Penn- Sylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller Chucks, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to work holdingl devices and more particularly to roller chucks having a plurality of roller jaws for grippingthe work, and has for one or its ol'ijects the provision ot a chuck primarily adapted for holding pipe couplings in a coupling screwing machine.
Ano-ther object is to provide a chuck of' this class having removable cam plates whichmay readily be replaced when worn.
A further object is to provide a chuck that may readily be adapted to hold couplings ci various sizes by substituting smaller cam rings and roller retaining rings.
i still further object is to provide a chuck havingthe novel design, constructions, and combination of parts described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
ln the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of our improved chuck attached to the positively driven hollow spindle or barrel of a coupling screwing machine.
Figure Q is a trout end elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation on the line lll-lll of Figure 1.
Figure 4l. is a tragmentary detail plan o'l the roller retaining ring showing the means for holding the rollers in place.
'Referring more particularly to the drawings, `the numeral 2 designates the main body portion or rim o1 the chuck, which is adapted to be rigidly secured to the positively driven barrel 3 of a coupling threading machine or like part of a similar machine. ln the drawings the rim` or body portion 2 of the chuck is shown secured to the barrel 3 of a coupling` threading machine by bolts 4.
A cam ring 5 is mounted within the body portion 2 and is held against rotation relative to the portion 2 by keys 6 and 7 se- Serial N0. 550,210,
cured in key-ways 8 and 9, respectively, formed by registering slots in the cam plate and the portion 2.
rEhe cani ring 5 is provided with a plurality of' transversely extending recesses or slots 10 on its inner peripheral surface which have their end walls 11 inclined or beveled inwardly and upwardly, and one end of the slots is formed deeper than the other. Cam plates 12, which have their end walls 13 correspondingly beveled, are removably mounted in said slots 10, the beveled end walls 13 of the plates cooperating with the end walls 11 of the slots 10 to -form a, dovetafiled connection, and one end ot' said pla will project downwardly from the cam ring a greater distance than the other, due to one end of the slots being deeper than the other. The cam ring is also cut away on each side of the slots 10 to term a roller path or travelway 14.
A roller retaining ring 15, mounted for rotary movement within the cam ring 5, is provided with an outer flange portion 15n adapted to abut the outer edges ot the cam ring 5. The roller retaining ring 15 is provided with a plurality of transverse outwardly diverging slots 1 6. That is, slots having a substantially V-shaped cross section. A. roller jaw member 17, mounted within each ot' the slots 16 is adapted to project therethrough and engage the work which. is .hewn `in the drawing as a pipe coupling A. The diameter' ol the rollerjaws yis greater than the narrowest or bottom portion olt the slots 1G so that they will be re tained therein, and these rollers have their Yforward ends beveled as at 1T in order to 'facilitate entering the work in the chuck.
The cam plates 1 2, due to their angular position with relation to the inner periphery ot the cam 'ring and the outer periphery or the roller retaining ring, will engage the rollers or jaws 17 when the roller retaining ringl5 is rotated clockwise and torce the roller jaws downwardly through the slots 1G into engagement with the work A, and when the roller retaining ring 15 is rotated in the reverse direction, or counter-clock wise, the roller jaws will be disengaged trom the cam plates. That is, the roller jaws will be moved to a position opposite lOl) the highest portion of the cam plates and consequently will be loosened from engagement with the Work member A.
Handles 18, secured to the Hange or the roller retainino' rino' l5 are ada )ted to D C2 7 be O'ri a )ed b .the o Jerator to turn the rino' b b to engage or disengage the Jaws 17 with the Work.
In order to arevent the 'aws 'i7 from be- J eomlng` displaced when inserting or removing the roller retainingring l5 'from within the cam rmO 5 a loelnnor elm 17" ma:`7 be tf1 7 27a L provided, as shown in Figure 4L. The clip 17h fits' Within Groove 17 in the-face oit [he C roller 'jaw ajndhas its ends' engaged in suit able apertures in the ring Y i't it is desired to use tlxeel'iuek for smaller work than it Will engage, as originally A(1ssembled, the Cani `ring; and .roller retaining,1 ring" may be removed and a can.l ring` having the saine outside diameter asl the one' removed, but a smaller inside diameter is substituted, together with' a: smaller roller retaining ring, thusproviding` a eliueli assemblyr suitable Yfor smaller Work Without removing the main Cliueli body from the barrel y3.
It Will" be understood'fthat vwhile this invention is describedxandv illustrated as a.'
desired, and it is to be particularly understood that the Word chuck used in this specification and claim is to be construed broadly enough to include any suchr gripping devices. v
While We have only shown one preferred embodiment of our invention We do not Wish to be limited thereto since various modifications rnay be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention as defined in the appended claim.
We Claim- A chuck comprising a main body portion, a cam ring removably secured" 'to said body portion, a plurality oi earn plates having beveled end walls and removably fitted into slots having beveled end Walls in the inner face of said cam ring, a roller retaining ring? inounted` within said eanr ring' and adapt-ed to move relative thereto, said roller retainingrinig beingip'rovided with a 'plurality of transverse slots having a substantially V- shap'e'd cross section,Y and a plurality of roller jaws meunted in said slots in'said roller retaining ,ringl and? adapted to be vengaged byv said Cain platesaivli'en; saidf'roller ring is rotated relative to'said earn ringsaid eam plates being' adapted to forcesaidroller javvs into engagement-with the Work.
In Witness `whereof, We havef hereunto Y signed our names..
