SKIRT BELT.
Application filed .Tune 13, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HYMAN L. GREEN- BERG, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt Belts, of whichthe following is a specifica tion.
My invention relates to a belt for attach 1o ment to the inside of a skirt at the upper end around the waist.
Such skirts are usually made with a straight belt or waist band which the weight of the skirt tends to sag and to get out of place both at the front and rear.
The pulling down of the waist band across the abdomen and over the small of the back produces an injurious pressure upon the wearer beside giving the skirt an awkward appearance.
The object of my invention is to attach to the inside of the skirt at its extreme upper end a belt which shall have a relatively broad bearing surface at both the front and the rear so that the weight of the skirt and the pressure of the waist band will be more largely distributed and more easily carried than the ordinary skirt while presenting a far more pleasing appearance.
My invention consists of a belt provided both at front and rear with a drop or downward extension. that at the front ex tending across the abdomen and that at the rear extending across the small of the back. The drop at both the back and the rear is quite considerable as compared with the width of the belt so that a large bearing surface is created for sustaining the weight of the skirt.
Preferably at the rear portion of the belt a section of elastic webbing is inserted so that the belt will conform to the curve of the figure while at the front the straight extension or drop will hold the abdomen in 45 a vertically straight position. stiffening members are inserted into the belt to hold it from collapsing and as I prefer to construct it, stiffening members extend downwardly through the belt proper and the ex- 50 tensions so as to hold all the parts in a properly extended position.
Serial No. 477,058.
The belt is made of relatively stiff material and is as stated, provided with boning or stiffening members.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 have illustrated a perspective view of my skirt belt unconnected with the supporting skirt. It consists of the belt proper l fastened together at the side in the usual way in any well known manner as by hooks and eyes 2. At the front portion there is a drop or downward extension 3 added to the lower edge of the belt and at the rear portion is a downward extension d preferably attached in two parts, one on each side of the center line.
As here shown, at the center of the back portion of the belt and between extensions 4 is a section of elastic webbing 5 which imparts to the rear of the belt a pliable or yielding character which enables it to conform to the body of the wearer.
The belt is provided with vertical boning 7 attached at various points for the purpose of preventing it from collapsing edgewise and similar boning 6 extends downward through the belt proper and the extensions, stiffening them and preventing them from curling upward or collapsing.
The belt is designed to be attached inside of the skirt at the extreme upper edge of both the belt and the skirt so that the belt is only confined to the skirt by a single line and is free to conform itself to the body of the wearer and to form a bearing surface for sustaining the weight of the skirt.
This skirt belt while adding greatly to the comfort of women adds much to the fit and appearance of the skirt.
1 claim A skirt belt for attachment to the inside of a skirt having vertically disposed stiffening members throughout substantially the whole of its circumference, a drop or extension at both front and rear with a section at the rear composed of elastic webhing to produce a straight front and formfitting rear portion.
