Be it known that I, HARLEY BARKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing Rochester, in the county of Fulton, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Camp-Bed; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to camp beds and has for its object to provide a foldable bed adapted to be attached to the running board of an automobile and so constructec i that when folded it will be supported on the running board in a position where it may be easily and quickly unfolded for use. Also to provide one of the bed sections with a closed bottom, which when the bed is :tolded forms a closure for the outside of the bed and when the bed is partially unfolded tor-ms a table top. I

The frame 11 has pivotally co'nnectedat 16 to its opposite sidessupporting legs 17, said legs being limited in their movement by angle members 18 thereby preventing folding of connected, said coiled springs 21 having their other ends connected at 22 to the transverse rail 5, and form means for resiliently supporting the bottom 19. The other end of the bottom 19 is provided with a bar 23 through which adjusting screws 2% extend, said adjusting screws also extending through the bare25 of the frame 11, and by means of which adjusting screws the canvas bottom 19 may be tensioned as desired. When the frames 11 and 4t are folded onto each other the canvas bottom 19 also folds as clearly shown in Figures 6 and 7 and is disposed between the frames 4: and 11 in such a manner that it will not interfere with the folding of the bed. The frames & and 11 are preferably braced by brace bars 26 which extend angularly across the corners of the frame'and are preferably formed from metal thereby allowing the maximum bracing efficiencyfland at the same time reducing the bulk of the device as a whole.

The framev section 11 is provided with a U-shaped foot rest 27, the arms 28 of which are pivotally mounted at 29 on brackets 30 carried by the ends of the bar 25 and extending upwardly and overlying the upper side of the bar 25. Foot rest 27 when in extended position as shown in Figure 2 is held in a vertical position by braces 31, which braces are pivotally connected at 32 to the foot rest arms 28 and at 33 to side rails 10 of the frame 11 and are provided with a conventional form of break joint which allow the foot rest 27 to be folded on the frame 11 in such a manner that during thefolding of the bed to its folded position on the running board it will not interfere with the foldin operation. The undersideofthe frame 11 is provided with a metallic sheet 35, which when the device i folded to the positions shown in Figures and 7 forms a table top thereby allowing the .foldable bed to be used as a camp table.

The bed being unfolded to the position shown in Figure 7 the operator gras the frame 11 and unfolds the same outwart 'v until it is in substantially the same hozontal plane as the frame 4, at which time the hinged members 8 are folded outwardly and disposed between the adjacent rails 6 and 10 of the frames 1- and 11. The bed frames having been extended, the folding legs 17 are moved to vertical position for supporting the bed at its outer end after which the foot rest 27 which is folded on the upper side of the frame 11 is moved to a vertical position as shown in Figure 2.,

However when thedevice is folded the head restmember a l and the arms 43 are moved to the full line position shown in Figure 7 with the folding inwardly onto the running board of the sections after having been folded to the position shown in Figure 7 From the above it will be seen that a folding camp bed is provided for automobile running boards which is simple in construction, and when extended the parts will be rigidly held.

The nvention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is I 1. The combination with an automobile running board, of a foldable bed carried thereby, said bed comprising a frame hingedly connected to the running board, a second frame, link connections between the adjacent ends of said frames, rigid hinged members carried by one of the frames and interposed between the adjacent ends of the frame when extended and above the link connections, said'link connections forming means whereby the frames may be folded into registration, and moved to vertical positions on the running board, a U-shaped frame pivoted to the running board spaced from the hinging point'of the running board carried frame and means carried by the un-v der side of the running board carried frame for receiving the transverse portion of the U-shaped frame and preventing outward displacement of the bed when folded.
