PUMP.
Application filed .Tune 11,
To aZZ whom it may concern.'
Be y1t known that-I5 GEORGE ALBERT GOL- Linr., a sub]ect ofthe King of Great Britain,
residing at 1l I-Iawlrsworth Road, AI/Vest` Bridgford7 in the city of Nottingham and county of Nottinghamshire, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Pumps, of which the following is a specification. y
My invention relates to improvements in pumps fitted with a piston which is reciprocated by means of one or more cams; In
this type of mechanism as applied to a valvel the production of a pump in which the pis-` tonA is reciprocated by cams or rollers on the piston, and rollers or cams carried plates or arms which are rotated within the outer diameter of the piston7 which piston may be held stationary or rotated, also improvei ments in the general arrangement and ycon-l struction of the pump.
In the accompanying drawing:-
Fig. 1 isa sectional elevation of a pump with a rotating piston reciprocated by edge cams. y f 4 Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of a pump with a rotating piston reciprocated by a rotating box cam, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of'a pump with a rotating piston reciprocated by rotating edge cams.
In the pump shown in Fig. 1 there is a cylinder 1 with a closed end 2 and a cover 3,. or there may be covers at both ends, and each cover is or may be provided with a gland and stufling box, also the cylinder is provided with inlet valves 4: and outlet valves 5 and such valves may be of` any suitable type and may be arranged in any convenient positions upon the cylinder. Inside the cyl- Inder there is a piston 13. This piston is mounted upon a central shaft 14 to which it connected in such manner that it rotates therewith and yet is free to slide thereon. The piston is provided, upon opposite sides or faces of the web or plate 10 that unites 1919. serial iva-303,443. Y,
of one or more throw, edgecams 15, which are'` inside ofand concentric with the periph! eral rim of the piston.v Bearing upon thel edges of these cams vare rollers 16` carried by the non-rotating arms ordisks 17,'which-are represented as being secured tothe pumpv casing by bolts 36.
In the pump shownin Fig. 2there is yal cylindrical pump casing 18 with' inlet valves 1 19 and outlet valvesQO. In thisarrangementM the piston 21 is'v carried by Va shaft 22 and rotates with such shaft and also slides on o r with such shaft. yInside the piston there is a one or more throw box cam 23 with` which engage the rollers '24- carried` by arms 25k mounted upon a rotating shaft 26'which is held from end movement.` In this arrange? ment the shafts 22 and 26. may be rotated in the shafts may be rotated in opposite direcvtions at the same or different speeds.
lntt? i i the pistonrimwith the shaftltpwitha lthe ysame directionv hut at different speeds, or
In the pump shown in Fig. 3,'the piston 27 is lshown with' a'one, throw edge cam 34 'conjunction with the cam therel are rollers 30 carried by arms `31y and 32. 'Ihe arm S1 is carried bv 'a sleeve 33 and the arm 32 bya vshaft 35.-l yThe sleeve -and the shaft 35 are heldfrom endmo-vement and,y
when the pump is in operation, are caused to revolve 1n unison. lIn this arragement the n arms 31" and'32`1`nay bev rotated in the-same having opposite parallel edges'or faces,y but `such cam. may have two or more throws.
direction asthe pistony but''v at a different.'
speed, or the arms ymay be" rotated in the opposite direction to the piston at the same or a different speed. f
The pump shown in Fig. l may have the cylinders fitted -withtwo or. more pistons and the arrangementof the inlet and outlet valves and of the cams and-rollers bearing thereon are modified accordingly.
In addition to theparts herein described, the shafts may be fitted with ball or other end thrust bearings and the pumps with other usual and necessary parts.
It will he observed that in each of the em- A therewith, while the vother element is held Lilieagainst corresponding reciprocation. wise` one of these elements rotates with` thc shaft that enters the pump casing, while the other element is :held against 'corresponding rotation.v lt follows that there may be a reversal fof location of the piston reciprocating elements of the pump, and this vhas been illustrated by means of the several em" bo'dimefnts of my invention presented in the drawings. Each particular embodiment herein shown is capable of modiiication along the lines indicated, 'p butin order to not require an unnecessarily large number of drawings itis thought that the showing taken in 'connection with this specification indicates the Aextent to which the invent-ion may be modified and still come within the scope of the invention and the claims which appear herein.
llclailn: v
1. A pump v,comprising a. casing, a reci piocating piston hitting the casing, a cam carried by the piston, a rotatingshaft to whicr the piston is secured so as to cause it to rotate therewith "but leaving it free to reciprocate in the casing, another rotating' shaft entering the casing, a roller bearing upon the said cam, carried by and rotatiin;` with the second mentioned shaft, and. means f or preventing longitudinal movements of the roller corresponding with the reciprocations of the piston, Vthe shafts heing vadapted to .have di'erential rotations imparted to them.
2. A pump comprising a casing, a reciprocating piston fitting the casing, a camcar-"p ried by the piston having two opposite faces these shafts 'being held against longitudinal movement and being adapted to be rotated in unison, and the shaft carrying kthe piston being adapted to lhave a rotative movement 'that is not in" unison with the shafts carrying the rollers.
3. rlhe combination stated in claim l, hav` ingr the piston reciprocatii'i'g elements, comprising cani and cia-operating rollers, located entirely inside a cylinder -genera-ted about the axis of the shaft carrying the piston 'and whose surface includes the peripheral face of the piston.
2l. The combinati-on stated in claiinf, haying the piston reciprocating eleinents-coni` prising cam and 'co-operating rollers-, lo-
cated entirely within a circle including theperipheral face of the piston.
A. pump comprising a casing, a reciprocating piston having a peripheral rim portion fitting the casing yand a web unnitii'ig it with a rotating shaft, la pair of edge cams extending respectively from the opposite faces of the web of 'the piston and insi of and concentric with the peripheral iiini ln witness whereof l have signed this specil'ication in the presence of 'tivo witnesses.
