Description

n. iq
VJILLAM T. ABBOTT, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
PORTABLE DOOR FASTENER.
Application. led January 18, 1922 Serial No. 530,194.
it lrnown that l, Winnaar T. ABBOTT, a citizen of the United yStates, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and the State of Chio, have invented certain new Vand useful Improvements in Portable Door Fasteners, of which the following is a speci- :'ication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in portable door fasteners, and particularly to that class of door fasteners which are adapted to be carried in the satchel of a traveler and to be applied to the room door in a `hotel or lodging house to insure the occupant of the room against intrusion from without.
lt is the especial object of this invention to produce a device of the class described which shall be simple of construction, convenient of application, and reliable in operation.
The means by which l attain these objects is fully set forth in the following specication, and illustrated in the accompanying drawingr4 of whichl is a sectional view taken through the edge of' a door and its jamb, illustrating the relation of my improved door fastener to the door during use.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved door fastener in assembled relation. A Figs. 8, l and 5 are details of the several elements which go to make up the device illustrated in Figs. l and2.
Lilie numerals refer to similar parts in the several figures.
As illustrated in the drawings my improved door fastener comprises an elongated plate l adapted to be inserted between the edge of a door 2 and its jamb 3 when said door is in closed position. Formed on the inner end of the plate l is a hook` like projection l adapted to enter the aperture in the keeper 5 which is commonly supplied to receive the latch bolt of the customary door lock. Formed in the plate l and extending longitudinally thereof is a slot 6 through which projects the flange 7 formed along the central longitudinal line of the plate 8 which constitutes a rider adapted to slide longitudinally along one face of the plate l. The proportions of the parts are such that when the rider plate 8 is in contact with the plate l. the flange 7 will project to such a distance through the slot 6 that it may be placed contactl with the face of the door 2, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Means is provided to provent outward movement of the rider 8 in the wedge 9 which is adapted to engage the flange 7 and a reflened fold 10 formed at the outer end of the plate l. `When the wedge 9 is in position under the fold l0 its opposite edge enters the notch l1 formed in the outer edge of the liange 7 thereby insuring against accidental withdrawal of the flange 7 from the slot 6.
ln operation the plate l is placed in position against the door jamb 3 with the progection il extending into the aperture ofthe keeper 5, and the door closed against it. The
rider 8 is then placed in position with the 7 projecting through the slot 6 and extending towards the door 2. The wedge 9 is then inserted in the notch 1l and under the fold l0, and is moved laterally of the plate l until the keeper flange 7 is firmly pressed against the face of the door. When these parts are thus positioned the door 2 will be securely held in 'closed position, thereby insuring the occupant of the room from intrusion from without.
llVhat l. claim as my invention is l. ln a device of the class described, the combination with an elongated plate insertable between the edge of a door and its j amb having a hook at one end adapted to engage said jamb and a refleXed fold at its other end, of a rider slidable longitudinally of the plate and adapted to engage the face of the door, and a wedge adapted to engage said rider and said refleXed fold to prevent movement of said rider relative to said plate as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with an elongated plate insertable between the edge of a door and its j amb and having` a hoolr` at one end adapted to engage said jamb and a refleXed fold at its other end, of a rider slidable longitudinally upon the face of the plate and having a flange adapted to project through a longitudinally extending slot therein to engage the face of the door` and a wedge adapted to engage said flange and said reileXed fold to prevent movement of said rider relative to said plate as and for the purpose set forth.
In a device of the class described, the combination with an elongated plate insertable between the edge of a door and its amb, and having a hook at one end adapted to enga-ge said jamb and a relexedfold at its other end? of a Fidel' Slidahle longitudinally along the falce of the plate and having a lange adapted to project thiough n longitudinally extending slot theen to engage the face oi the door, and a Wedge adapted to engage a notch in seid flange to prevent. its Withdranf'al from said Slot as and for the purpose set forth.
4l.A ln a device of the class described, the combination with an elongated plate insertahle between the edge of a door and its jamb and having a hook at one end adepted'yto Lelieel engage said and ieexed fold at its ori-hei end7 of aridei' slidable along one face of seid plete and having a flange adapted to pioject through e. longitudinally extending slot thefein to engage the fece of the door, and a Wedge adapted to engage said Piange and said reexed fold to prevent movement of said rider relative to said plete as and for the pnpoee set forth.
ln testimony whefeof l afx my signature.
