Be it known that I, lVILLIAM A. HART- LINE, citizen of United States, residing at Midland, in the county of Midland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

The invention has reference to attachments for pens particularly fountain pens, and provides means for equipping such articles with soap and ink erasers and blotting attachment.

An additional object is to provide an attachment of the character above noted adapted to be associated with the cap of a fountain pen and so designed as to be normally concealed from view therein; said cap having a portion removable to expose the attachment for use when desired.

An additional object is to provide a. blotting and ink erasing attachment for fountain pens, simple and strong in construction, and carefully designed for convenience and service to meet the demands of all fountain pen owners at any time or place.

\Vith the above and other objects in view the invention may be said to reside generally in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out and disclosed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1, is a view showing the cap-end of a fountain pen, the cap being partly in section to illustrate the inner or blotter-holding section; Figure 2, a view showing the inner section detached from the fountain pen cap, a section of which is only shown; Figure 3, a sectional view disclosing the various parts of the attachment in assembled relation; Figure 1 is a view showing the blotter detached from the cap; Figure 5 is a sectional view disclosing a modified form of the invention; Figure 7 an end View of the reversible section, showing the cylindrical blotter carried thereby; andFigure 6 a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the modified cap and section in assembled relation.

The purpose of the invention is to equip fountain pens and like articles with ink erasing and blotting means which can be put to instant use as occasion may require. In the drawings, the upper or butt end of Serial No. 485,817.

serves as a holder for the various parts of the attachment and which is modified accord ingly. In applying the invention to the cap, the latter is made in two parts, as indicated at 3 and 4, respectively the lower or main part being tubular while the upper part provides an end-cap for the holder.

Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings illustrate one form of the invention which includes a short, tubular, section 5 having upstanding lugs 6, notchedat the top edges, as shown at 7. This section is of such diameter as to snugly fit in the holder 3 at one end, as shownin Fig. 1', with the lugs pro- I jecting outwardly thereof. Engageable with lugs 6 of the section is a U-shaped spring bracket 8 which carries a roller 9 of suitable blotting material. This bracket when being attached tothe sectionis slid inwardly between lugs 6, which serve as guides for the arms 10 of the bracket. These arms are flexed to spring outwardly against the lugs to hold the roller in place and have bent ends 11 engageable with the notches of the lugs to prevent the roller from turning therebetween. Fitting in the lower end of the section is an ink eraser 12 adapted to be used interchangeably with blotter 9 but normally concealed within holder 3 when the blotter is in a closed position. Roller 9 and eraser 12 are both removable from section 5 and hence, may be replaced whenever necessary. Section 5 is also reversible, end for end, for exposing either the roller or the eraser exteriorly of the holder and when not in use is adapted to be covered by end-cap 4, which fits over the exposed end of the section, joining with holder 3 as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings and completely conceals the section with its attached elements.

In the modified form of invention, as shown in Figures 5 to 6 inclusive, the tubular section is formed with an annular shoulder or collar 13 intermediate the oppositely projected socket portions 14 and 15; this collar being adapted to interpose and thus serve to retain the parts in connected relation. Eachsocket is, moreover, adapted to hold a cylindrical element which may be either an eraser as indicated at 16, or a blotter as shown at 17. Blotter 17 may be formed from a single strip rolled into cylindrical shape and inserted in the socket as shown in Figs. 6 and 7.

To use the attachment, thetop cap 4 is first removed from the holder, exposing one end of section 5 which may thus be used for blotting or erasing, depending upon which type is exposed from the holder. When blotting with blotting roller 9, the same is merely rolled across the line to be dried, absorbing the ink without a blur.

On the other hand the cylindrical blotting roll 17 is used to blotby tapping along the written lines, the ink being readily absorbed by the various plies of the roll. It will thus be seen that the invention provides both an ink-erasing attachment and a blotting attachment for fountain pens, capable of being put to instant and convenient use and so arranged as to be readily concealed from view when not in use.

If so desired the part 3 may be reduced at its end so as to form a shoulder. The part would beadapted to fit over the reduced end and abut the shoulder.

The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to what might be considered to be the approved or preferred form of my invention, I desire it to be understood, however, that I'may make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. An attachment of the character specified comprising a holder, a reversible section inserted in the holder, and an eraser at one end of the section, and a blotter at the opposite end, said section being reversible to expose either the eraser or blotter exteriorly of the holder, and cap means fitting over the section and engaging the exposed portion of the latter whereby it is concealed from view.

2. An attachment of the character specified comprising a holder, a tubular section insertible in the holder at one end, an eraser projectin exteriorly of one end of the section, a blbtting roll supported exteriorly of the opposite end of the section, said eraser and blotting rollbeing removable from the said section, said section being reversible in the holder for causing either the eraser or blotting roll to be ex-- posed therefrom, and a removable cap fitting over the exposed elements of the section for concealing same, said section forming a connecting tie between the said cap and holder.
