,Be it known that we,GUsTAv W. .PAULSON and ROBERT H. I-lrnmboth citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folders for Lock-End Collar Blanks, of which the following is a specification. 1 y
This invention concerns folding and pressing machines such as are commonly employed in the manufacture of collars and cuffs and relates more particularly to the folder devices employed in'such machines.
In the'manufacture of collars of that type having-a lock-end difliculty is sometimes experiencedin securing a proper folding of the material at the lock-end of the collar blank. Thisis due to the fact that at such lock-end the blank is somewhat wider than an edge of concave curvature merging into the substantially straight edge of the blank. In the usualtype of folding machinethe folder blocks of each'pair are mounted re spectively upon folder blocks of substan .tially equallength, and such blocks are caused simultaneously to move inwardly in curved patl1swhilemaintaining their axial alignment,'thereby to wipe the margins of the blanktransversely inwardly and over the edge of the dieplate. When, however, the die plate is of the form necessary to the making of a lock-end collar as above re ferred to, the usualmovement of thefolder blade is ineffective for foldin that section of the blank comprising the concavely curved portion of the lock-end thereof, the
movement of each element of the folder block being substantially parallel to suchof folders arranged in the usual manner when utilized in making lock-end collars.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide forthe mechanical folding of a loek-end collar blank, or other article having a salient orreentrant angle or both, in an efficient and satisfactory manner. To thls end the lnventlon comprises means for folding those marginal portions of the blank in theregion of the salient or reentrant angle more nearly normally to the edges'of the blanks in such region than has end of Fig. 3; and

More specifically the invention may consist in making the folder blocks corresponding to that margin of the blank comprising the salient or reentrant edge of suchunequal length that their point of junction is closely adjacent such concave edge, rather than at the center of the die, the two blocks being actuated and retainedin alignment by any suitable means, as for example ahinge connection. In folding lock-end collar blanks with such an arrangement the Short folder block is called upon to fold only the transversely extending end margin of the blank, while the motion of the longer block is such as properly to fold not only the straight edge of the blank but also the reentrant or concavely curved portion of the lock-end.
In the accompanying drawings there is illustrated by way of example,'a preferred arrangement of parts whereby the desired object maybe attained. In these draw- 1ngs:--

This table is provided with a longitudinal channel or depression at its center in which is mounted the bed plate 4[ Cooperating with the bed. plate is a die plate 5 mounted upon a carrier 6 which in turn is sup ported upon an arm 7. The arm ,7 is pivoted at 8 between a pair of brackets 9 secured to the machine frame, and such arm may be raised and lowered in any suitable manner, as for example by the .mechani-sm shown in the patent to Brown above referred to. v
Mounted upon the upper surface of the table are the folder blocks 10 and 11., of substantially equal length. The adjacent ends'of the blocks 10 and 1.11. are provided with slots 12 and 13, respectively, in which are adjustably secured the slides 1eand 15. To the respective slidesare pivotally secured the hinge leaves 16 and 1? which are pivotally connected together as indicated at 18. The hinge connection between the blocks 10 and ll thus permits them to move toward and from each other in an axial direction while maintaining them in axial alignment. The remote ends of the members 10, and 11 have secured thereto the br'rkets' 20 and 21 respectively. For retaining the members l0 and 11 in position upon the table, guide members 19. are provided. v
Upon the opposite side of the bed plate from tl'ie folder blocks just described is a second pair of folder blocks 22 and. 23, re-
spectively. While the blocks 10 and ii are of substantially equal length as is usual in machines of this character, the block 22 is very much shorter than the block The adjacent ends of the blocks 22. and 23 are provided with slots 2 i and 25 in which are adjustably seated the slides 26 and 27 respectively. These slides serve to pivotally support the hinge leaves 28 and 29 which in turn are pivotally connected at the point 80. The blocks 22 and 23 are thus maintained in alignment while at the same time they are capable of relative endwise movement. For retaining the blocks 22 and 23 in proper position, guide members such as j 31 may be employed. The remote ends of the blocks 22 and 23 have secured thereto the brackets 32 and 33 respectively.
At each end of the machine there are provided bosses such as 34 and 35 depending from the under side of the table, such bosses being provided withjournal openings for the "reception of vertical shafts such as 36. The
upper end of each shaft is provided with an eccentric pin 37, which pins engage suitable openings in the respective brackets 20, 21. 32 and 33. The four shafts thus provided are suitably connected together for simultaneous rotation in any desired manner as, for example, as shown in the patent to Brown above referred to.
The die plate 5 is of the shape indicated in Fig. 3, having a substantially straight edge '5 which merges into a conca-vely curved edge 5". This die plate also has a substantially straight edge 38 intersecting the curved edge 5". A folder, comprising the blades 20 21 secured tothe respective blocks 10 and 11, is arranged at the front of the bed plate while the folder comprising the plates 39 and 42 carried by the blocks shape of the dieplate 5, the concavely curved end portion 5 of which corresponds to the locking end ofthe collar blank. Inthe operation of the machine the material having been placed upon the bed plate and the die plate 5 having been lowered to the position indicated in Fig. l, the several shafts 36 are simultaneously rotated in the direction indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1. The result of this movement is to cause a diagonal inward movement of the folder blocks toward the-center of the machine, resulting in wiping the edges of the material inwardly and transversely over the edges of the die plate. The eccentric pins 37 which actuate the blocks '22 and 23 are both disposed to the rear-of the longitudinal axis of the blank and impart. simultaneous move inent to these blocks such that points in the edges of the plates 39 and 42 describe "arouate paths, the inner or concave sides of which are presented toward and disposed upon opposite sides of a line bisecting the salient angle 'ofthe blank being folded. While the invention has been described as particularly applicable to the folding of collar blanks having a locking end, it is contemplated that in certain of its aspects, the invention might well be employed in the folding of other articles presenting similar difiiculties in folding, While has Leeasso it is further contemplated that various changes and modifications in the structure for performing the desired purpose, as Well as the actuating mechanism therefor, might well be introduced without departing from the spirit of the present invention.
Having thus described the invention in a preferred embodiment of the same, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a machine for folding the margins of a collar blank having a salient portion included between a longitudinal edge and end margin. of the blank, a folder comprising parts disposed at opposite sides of said salient portion, and means disposed wholly to one side of the longitudinal axis of the blank for simultaneously moving said parts toward each other along arcuate paths toward the respective margins of the salient portion while maintaining each part parallel to itself at all stages of its movement.
2. A machine for folding the margins of a collar blank having a salient portion included between a longitudinal edge and end margin of the blank, comprising a folder having parts simultaneously movable toward each other on opposite sides of said portion along arcuate paths concave toward the bisector of said salient portion, one of said folders being constructed and arranged to fold the entire length of said longitudinal edge portion. 7
3. A machine for folding the margins of a collar blank provided with a salient angle adjacent to one end thereof, having a folder comprising two independently supported elements having their proximate ends located at a point adjacent to the apex of the angle of the blank, and a pair of oppositely turning cranks arranged to one side of the longitudinal axis of the blank for causing said elements to move inwardly on converging lines whereby one of said elements acts to fold a longitudinal margin of the blank at one side of the angle and the other element folds the end margin of the blank at the other side of the angle.
4:. A folding machine for folding lockend collar blanks comprising a folder blade substantially coextensive in length with one longitudinal edge of the blank, a second folder blade'for folding the margin of the blank at the lock-end thereof, independent means located adjacent to the remote ends of the respective blades. for imparting move ment to the remote ends of said blades, and means whereby movement of one of said blades is transmitted to the proximate end of the other.
5. A folding machine for folding lockend collar blanks comprising aligned, relatively movable folder blocks, a folder blade secured to one of said blocks, said blade be ing of a length substantially coextensive with one of the longitudinal edges of the blank to be folded, a folder blade secured to the otherblock and constructed and arranged to fold the end of the blank, and means for simultaneously moving said blockswith their blades for performing the folding operation. i
6. A folding machine of the class deblocks, folder blades mounted upon the respective blocks constructed and arranged respectively to fold substantially an entire longitudinal edge and an end margin of a collar blank, means connecting the proximate ends of said blocks, and means for simultaneously moving the remote ends of said blocks.
'7. A machine of the class described comprising a pair of aligned folder blocks, one block being substantially longer than the other, means for maintainig said blocks in alignment, and a folder blade secured to each of said blocks, that folder blade car-,

A machine for folding the margins of acollar, one longitudinal edge of which has a reentrant portion near one end, comprising a folder divided in'the region of said end, one part being movable inwardly over said end and the other part being movable inwardly over said reentrant portion, relatively -movablc means for supporting the respective parts of the folder, and means arranged at the saine side of the longitudinal axis of the blank for simultaneously imparting operative movement to said supporting means.
