Description

the walls until they are engaged by the ernpaling members a as illustrated in Fig. 3. The empaling members el. are then bent don'inv'ardly as illustrated in Fig. et so that `their ends extend in parallelism with, or
gaged by them, they exert a tension upon the material which serves to stretch the saine snugly around thev outer surface of the base and side Walls ol the receptacle and since these empaling members, when bent downwardly., remain in such position the tension upon the covering material is maintained. Thus the covering material is perfectly litted upon the outer surface of the article and securely held in place.
By reason of this4 construction it is unnecessary to use adhesive such as has heretofore been employed in the production of covered articles of this character and consequently, the necessity for the use of heat to render the adhesive temporarily tacky is eliminated. As a consequence, thc likelihood of injury to the covering or the penetration into the covering of the adhesive, Which some times has heretofore occurred, is entirely obviated.
In the construction of a receptacle of this character any suitable material may be em ployed. Preferably the body portion of the article is formed of suitable sheet metal of sufficient rigidity to produce a strong receptacle. The coverin may be of any suitable material, but pre erably is of velvet or other types of cloth commonly used in the covering of eWelry boxes. or leather7 but it Will be understood that the invention contemplates broadly the use oit any suitable covering material.
While it is desirable that the covering shall be applied in the manner above described it will be understood that the empaling members may be iirst bent flmvnward to the position illust-rated in Fige Ll7 or il desired may be formed with the point-s projecting downwardly or array from the edge of the body and the coveri material stretched over said enipaling memberst This may be accomplished Where elastic material is employed, or material which may be rendered elastic by soaking with Wateil or other liquid, For example, a leather covering may be secured to the article by sufficiently moistening the leather to cause it to stretch, applying the same to the outer side of the article and stretching the edges over sulficiently to engage the reversely positioned projecting empaling members, the leather when dried being caused to lshrink sulficiently tostretch the same snugly against the outer sides or' the article. l
While articles embodying my invention may be produced by hand operations, the same preferably is produced by a machineI such as that disclosed in my prior application Serial Number 378,554 ol which the present application is a division. .\s disclosed in that application the artliclc isV placed upon the cover and then 'forced inio a suitable die, formers heilig provided lo fold inwardly the edges ol the cover, and :i plunger employed to force the cover upon the empaling members and finally bend the empaling members downwzu'dly as illustrated herein.
It Will be understood that the embodiment of the invention disclosed herein is ol an illustrative character and that various modiications in form7 construction and arrangement of the essential parts may be `made Within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A covered article ol" the class described comprising a body of.' rigid material having a covering of flexible material secured to it by pointed empaling members integral with said body which penetrate said covering material.
2. A covered article of the class described comprising a body, a sheet olz covering material stretched snugly against the surface thereof and retained in stretched position by pointed empaling members projecting Yl'rom said body through said covering.
3. A covered article of the class described comprising` a sheet metal body hn vingr integral pointed empaling members extending away Yfrom the edge o'li said body and a sheet of covering material bent around the edge of said body and engaged by and retained in position by said empaling ineinbers.
el. A covered article of the class described comprising a sheet metal body. a covering stretched snugly against one` side thereof and empaling members integral with said body engaging said covering and reverseh` bent 'to maintain a tension upon said coverlllll prising a sheet metal body having a base and side Walls, empaling members projecting from the inside of said side walls in a direction away from the edges thereof and a sheet of covering material having its edges lemme extending around the edges of seid side `walls and engaged by said retaining mem- "tendng empeling members stamped there from with the points extending toward -the edges of said side Wells, :i sheet of covering material stretched snugly against the outside of seid body and retained in stretched `condition by seid empaling members When reversely bent to canse their ends to extend away from the edges of said side Walls'.
'8. A. ffibrie covered metal box in which the sheet of covering materiel extends et its edges over the `edges of the box Wells sind lies against the inside of the Wells and is held sti-etched snugly against the outer surface of the box by :L plurality of pointed tabs struck out of the metal of the box walls, `passed through the covering materiel and bent down over the materiel against the inside of and away from the edges of the box Walls.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my neme to this specification.
