. WINDOW LOCK.
I Application file'iirJune 2,
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that SILVIE 0. Lions, a citizen of the United States, residing at. Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of Californa, has invented'new and useful Improvements in indow Locks, of which the following-is a specification.
This invention relates to a window lock or catch.
The invention consists in providing means by which a window sash may be locked against raising or lowering movement. in any position desired. Also in providing means for releasing the locking member whereby the sash may be raised and lowered at w1ll.
The invention has for its objects generally, to provide such a locking meansns above characterized which may be applied to any ordinary window sash and easing;
which may be easily operated for raising or lowering the sash; which is positive in its operation and which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects relating to details of construction will hereinafter appear in the description to follow.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings in whioh- Fig. 1 is a fragmentaryview of a wlndow sash and easing partially shown in section to more clearly illustrate my invention.
Fig. 2 is central sectional view through the locking means when in its applied position.
Referring to the drawings more particularly-10 indicates generally a window sash and 11 a casing therefor. In this particular instance the locking means as shown is employed for locking the lower sash only, but, of course, it is to be understood that the same could be utilized for locking the upper sash as well. The lock is preferably positioned near the lower endof a vertical member of the sash. The lock comprises a cup member 12 which is adapted to fit in an opening provided in the vertical member of i a sash as illustrated in Fig. 2. The cup has an outwardly disposed flange or rim 13 at its top and through the use of screws or the llke 14, the 'same is secured in positlon. The opening .in the window sash 1s made considerably deeper than required for the cup,
the purposes of which will now become apparent. In the bottom of the cup one end of a crank pin or shaft 15 is journalled as 1920. Serial No. 385,939.
at 16. Near the margin or perimeter of the bottom of the cup there is secured a pin 17' on the end of which there is rigidly secured an arm 17 which supports a bearing 18 adapted to journal thev other end of the crank shaft 15. On the crank shaft there 1s secured one end of a plunger pin 19. the plunger extending through the side of the sash and its free end slidingly held by a boxing or hearing 20. The boxing or bearing 20 is integrally formed with the cup 12, the two being connected through the portion 21. The inner portion of the bearing 20 is flared outwardly so as to permit the plunger pin 19 to have the movement given it by the crank shaft 15. As is obvious from this construction when the crank shaft is turned in the position shown in Fig. 2 the crank pin will extend outwardly from the side edge of the sash. A thumb screw head 22 is provided on the outer end of thecrank shaft 15 so that the same may be easily manipulated. In the vertical guide way of the casing 11 there is secured a strip 23, preferably of metal and having provided therein a series of holes 24 adapted to receive the free end of'the plunger pin 19. When the plunger pin is in position as illustrated in-the drawings the window sash is locked against raising and lowering. In order to hold the plunger pin in its locking position I provide a leaf spring 25 which is secured to the pin 17 and its other end having a slot through which the inner end of the plunger pin 19 extends. The inner end of the plunger pin is reduced and thus provides a shoulder to hold the leaf spring 25 against outer movement on the plunger. As is obvious, the tendency of this spring is to hold the plunger pin 19 in its locking position. hen it is desired to release the sash or withdraw the plunger from its opening 24 the crank shaft 15 may be turned against the tension of the spring 25 whichin turn will draw the plunger 19 inwardly and thus permit the sash to be lowered or raised as desired.
I have shown the lock applied when the sash 10 is in its lowered position. In. this instance the look would serve to lock the windows against intrusion. In case it is desired to partially raise the window the plunger will be brought to engage in any of the other holes 24 and the window thereby locked in said position.
While I have shown the preferred form of my invention it is to be understood that various changes in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts may be made by those skilled in the art, Without departin from the spirit of the invention as claime c Having thus described my invention WVhELt I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i A'device of the character described ineluding in combination a sash and a casing therefor, said casing having a series of: re cesses formed in its runway, said sash having a recess formed therein, a cup shaped member adapted to snugly fit. into said recess, a flange on saidmember adapted to engage and be secured to the surface of the sash. i-L crank shaft having one end journaled inthe cup-shaped member and the other end journaled in the inner wall of the recess, a thumb nut head "formed on the outer end of the crank shaft by which it may be rotated, at phuigerhavingan eyelet formed at one end and journeled on the crank portion of the shaft, said plunger adapted to be reciprd cated by rotation of the shaft for engaging With 'therecesses formed in the casing, 21 arcuate spring member having one end secured to the cup-shaped member, a shoulder on the plunger, the free end of the spring member having a slot formed therein througlrivhich the plunger eXtends, Whereby the spring may bear against the shoulder formed on the plunger and retain the latter in its locking position;
