To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. KELLEY, a citizen of the vUnited States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drilling Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools used in well drilling and has for its object the provision of a tool for drilling by or alongside of and in communication with a previously drilled hole in which a drill or other portion of the drilling tools has been dropped, the advantage of my device being that it enables another hole to be mace so as to recover the dropped drill or other article so that the regular drilling in the original hole may be continued.
An impotant. objectis the provision of a drilling tool of this-character which is of peculiar formation and so constructed as to cut a generous sized hole for the purpose mentioned.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive, highly efiicient in use, dura ble in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device.

Figure 1 is a cross sectional view on. the line %el of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the shank or body of the tool which is tapered from its extremity, as shown, so that its entrance end will be relatively small. At the end of the larger portion the body is squared, as shown at 11, and adjacent this squared portion is a cylindrical portion 12 terminating in a tapered threaded extension 13 for engagement within a suitable holding device where by the drill may be operated.
Formed in one side of the body 10 is a groove 14 which is arcuate in cross section and which has its greatest depth at the smaller end of the body and which decreases gradually to nothing adjacent the squared portion 11. At a point spaced from the smaller-end of the body is formed a shoulder 15 which terminates in a cutting edge 16 projecting beyond the body 10. Between the shoulder 15 and the squared portion 11 is a shoulder 17 having a cutting edge 18 which projects to the same extent as the edge 16. y
In the operation of the device it will be seen that as the lower end of the drill body is of substantially half-round design the tool may be started by the side of any tools which might be lost in the original hole. As the lower end cuts away and lowers the hole by the tools, the two projections or shoulders 15 and 17 start cutting away and increase the size of the by-holc. It will be noted that the concaved groove of the tool gradually tapers out and at the point where the shoulder 17 is located the concaved groove is almost absent. After this point passes the top end of any tool, which might be lost in the hole, it is then very easy for the standard drilling tools to be run into the hole to start drilling in the usual manner, thus drilling a very liberal hole the entire length of any tool which might be lost in the original hole.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a very simple and inexpensive tool for the purpose specified which will be extremely etficient and which will result in saving great expense in the event that the regular drilling tools have become lost in a hole. l/Vhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understoodthat I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A tool of the character described comprising an elongated body having a. cylindrical base portion adapted for connection with an operating means, said body being partially cut away at one side starting at a point spaced from said base portion to its other end to be parallel with the axis of the body and having its other side tapered so that the second named end will be comparatively small, said second named side being formed with a groove, and a plurality of shoulders formed on the first mentioned side and having sharpened edges.

A tool of the characterdescribed com- 1 prising an elongated body having one end constituting a cylindrical base adapted for connection with an operating means, said body being partially cut away at one side starting at a point spaced from said end to its other end to be parallel with "the axis of the body and having its other side tapered so the second named end will be com-* paratively small, said second named side being formed with a groove, and a plurality of shoulders formed on the firstmentioned side and having sharpened edges, said shoulders extending the same distance outwardly beyond said first mentioned side.
3. A tool of the character described comprising an elongated body having acylindri cal base portion adapted for connection with an operating means, said body being partially, cut away at one side starting at a point spaced from said base portion to its other end tobe parallel with the axis of the body and having its other side tapered so that said other end will be comparatively small, said second named side being formed with a groove, and a. plurality of shoulders formed on the first mentioned side andhaving sharp p ortio'n" enededges, said groove being curved in cross section and having its greatest depth at the smaller end of the body and decreastion.
4-. A tool of the character described comprising an elongated body having one end adapted ton'connection with an operating means, said body tapering throughout its length and being formed concavo convex in cross section and provided at its convex side with transverse cutting edges.
5. A tool of the character described comprising an elongated-body"tapered at one side throughout its length and formed with a groove extendinglongitudinally and increasing in depth toward the smaller end,
and transverse cutting edges formed on the' side opposite the groovedside.
6. A tool of the character described comprising an elongated body having one end gitudinal groove wherebyao be concavoconvex in cross section and being provided with a plurality of transverse cutting edges at its convex side.
