FILED OCT. 6, 1919.
. INVENTOH ATTORNEY Patented Jan. l d, 1 .923.
ALEXANDER SAXE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOOTHBJRUSH.
Application filed October 6, 1919. Serial No. 328,638.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER Sin-1n, a citizen of the United States, and res'dent of the borough of Manhattan, ity, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toothbrushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tooth brushes and its principal object is to provide a brush head upon which the handle may be adjustably secured in order to change the relative positions.
Heretofore it has been customary to arrange the longitudinal axis of the heads of tooth brushes in alignment with the longitudinal axis of the handle. Such construction, while proven satisfactory in many ways, does not readily permit the user to clean the inner surfaces of the teeth. It has been found that by arranging the brush head transversely of the handle, access is more readily had to the inner surfaces of the teeth and another object of the present invention is to provide a tooth brush having the handle and head so arranged as to permit the head to be turned into either transverse or longitudinal position, thereby combining the advantages of the ordinary tooth brush with that of the brush having the transversely arranged head.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1, is a top plan fragmentary view of a brush showing a pivoted head arranged transversely of the handle.
Fig. 2, is a top plan view of Fig. 8, showin the head in its opposite position.
rig. 3, is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the brush head is designated by the numeral 16 and the handle by the numeral 17. The head and handle are connected by a suitable pivot 18 and formed in the handle is a bore 19 for the reception of a round ended pin 20 carried at the end of an arcuate spring 21 which is secured to the upper side of the handle in any preferred manner. The brush head is provided with recesses 22 in its upper side which are arranged to receive the lower end of the pin 20 and cooperate therewith in retaining the head in its various adjusted positions.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that certain minor changes in the details or construction, combination and arrange ment of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is 1. A tooth brush having a head provided with a recess, a handle, means for pivotally connecting said head and said handle, and an arcuate spring upon said handle, and a pin supported by said spring and adapted to enter said recess to temporarily retain said head and said handle in fixed relation.
2. A tooth brush comprising a head provided with a plurality of recesses, a handle, a pivot connecting said head and handle, a pin extending through said handle. a spring for operating said pin, said spring being secured to said handle adjacent to and partly surrounding said pivot, said spring urging said pin into one of the recesses of said head to retain said head and handle in fixed relation.
Signed at New York city, this 26 day of Sept, 1919.
ALEXANDER SAXE.
