Description

COMBINED STOPPER AND STRAINER. FILED AUG.8, 1921.
W i/ Mm TTORNEYS,
Patented Jan. 16, 1923.
stares PATENT COMBINED STOPPER AND STBAINER.
Application filed August 8, 1921. Serial No. 490,475.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAnLns A. REN- I-roLnr, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Stoppers and Strainers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combination stopper and strainer for the outlets of wash tubs, basins, etc., and more especially to a device consisting of two parts together constituting a stopper, one part of which alone is adapted to constitute a strainer.
The object of the invention is to incorporate into a single device of simple construction, both a stopper and a strainer, the stopper being of novel construction, including the strainer as a part of its structure, and a part of the stopper being readily and easily removable from the strainer, whereby said strainer can be used alone as such when said removable part of the stopper is withdrawn from the strainer in the manner hereinafter to be fully set forth.
With the above object in view, as well as others which will become obvious as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the construction, arrangement and combination of parts as now to be made plain and as later to be specifically claimed, it being run derstood that changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made so long as within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification,
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of a wash tub, showii'ig the combination stopper and strainer as when in use as a stopper;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevational view of the device as in Fig. 1;
Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view on line 3-3 in Fig. 4;
Fig. 4c is a top plan view corresponding with the showing of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the part of the device adapted to constitute a strainer; and
Fig. 6 is an elevational view of the removable part of the stopper.
Referring to the characters and numerals of reference on the drawing. A denotes a wash tub having the usual beveled seat, outlet B, and C denotes an ordinary drain pipe beneath said outlet. The device of the invention is adapted to snugly seat in the beveled outlet B, both when used as a stopper or as a strainer. See Fig. 1.
The combination stopper and strainer consists essentially of a strainer frame 10, preferably of metal, adapted to seat in the outlet B, a strainer element 11 carried by said frame and a removable stopper element The stopper element 12 is capable of being separably fastened into the strainer frame 19 to constitute a stopper, shown in Figs. 1 to elinclusive, or to be removed from the strainer frame so that said frame, together with its element, can constitute a strainer as in 5. To the accomplishment of the above ends, the strainer frame 10 may, as shown, consist of an outer disk 18 of proper shape and size to plug the outlet B, an inner disk 14 fitted into the outer disk 13, and inter nally extending annular flanges denoted by 15 and 16, respectively, carried by said disks, respectively, clamping the circumferential margin of the strainer element 11, as will be understood. The removable stopper element 12 may consist of two disks 1'? and 18 of rigid material, such as metal, between which is a disk 19 of packing material, such as rubher, all of said disks 17, 1S and 19 being secured together as by means of rivets, or the screws 20 may be utilized for this purpose. I desirably shape the disk 17 in about the manner indicated at 21 to provide means for attachment of the loop member 22 to be used as a handle or for the connection of an ordinary chain. The disk .18 is preferably of a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the opening afforded by the annular flange l0, and the disk 19 is of greater diameter to squarely seat against the margin. of said. flange for its full circumference.
h leans is provided for removably securing the stopper element to the strainer frame in such manner that the circumferential margin of the packing disk 19 bears firmly against the circumferential margin of the annular flange 16 so that no water can pass between said disks. As shown, the marginal edge of the disk 17 integrally carries spaced apart flanges 23, while the disk 14 carries similar spaced apart flanges 24, all of said flanges being properly constructed and arranged to provide a cam action between said stopper element and strainer frame when turned into engagement with each other, as will be understood.
Supposing the two parts of the device are separated as in Figs. 5 and 6 and it is desired to connect them with each other. All that is necessary is to position the stopper element so that the disk 18 is in the opening 01": the annular flange 16 and the flanges 23- the manner shown in Figs. 3 and 4. To remove the stopper element the operation just described is reversed.
It is evidentthat the parts of the devices can be connected or disconnectd while inserted in a wash tub or basin outlet.
Having fully described the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1- l. A. combination stopper and strainer, comprising a pair of members together constituting a stopper, and interlocking circumicrential flanges on each of said members providing an unrestricted center opening through said members, the flanges of one being spaced apart to receive the flanges oi the other for detachably securing said members to each other by relative rotation, one of said members adapted to alone constitute a strainer.
2. A combination stopper and strainer for wash tubs or basins, comprising a strainer adapted to fit into a wash tub or basin out let, said strainer consisting of a. strainer frame and a strainer element, a stopper element and means adapted to de-tachably secure said stopper element to said strainer f'ame, under yielding pressure, to render the the strainer watertight, said strainer frame comprising a pair of disks having internally extending annular flanges between which the strainer element is fastened, and the stopper element comprising a plurality of disks, there being two metal disks and apacking disk, one of said metal disks adapted to be located within the opening defined by one of said internally extending annular flanges, said packing disk adapted to engage said annular flange just mentioned and said other metal disk and one of said disks of said strainer frame carrying spaced apart inter-engaging flanges, whereby said stopper element and said strainer can be clamped to each other.
3. A combination stopper and strainer, comprising a pair of members, together constituting a stopper, one of said members adapted to alone constitute a strainer, and interlocking flanges on said members adapted to have relative rotation to detachably secure said members together, the flanges of one member having camming surfaces where by the members are engaged under yielding pressure to form a water-tight connection.
Signed at Bridgeport in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut this 13th day of July, A. D, 1921.
