Description

, c. c. HEDBERG. TOILET SEAT FRONT SHIELD.
FILED NOV, 3, I921.
Jig/J.
Patented Jan. 16, 1923.
' UNITED S ATES CHANCEY c. HEDBERG, or .Mo nEsfiowA.
Application filed November 3,1921. Serial No.- 512,672,
To all whom 2'15 may concern I Be it known that I, CHANQEY C. HED- BERG, a citizen of the'United States, and resident of Des Moines, in the county of'Polk 5 and State of Iowa, have inventeda certain new and useful Toilet-Seat Front Shield of which the following is a specification.
Toilet bowls as now ordinarily con structed are provided with rounded rubber l0 rests fixed to a seat portion anddesigned to engage and rest uponthe portion of the bowl. In connection with toilet bowls of this kind it frequently happens that liquid is projected upwardly and forwardly and escapes through the space between the top of the toilet bowl and the under surface of the toilet seat. Further, it sometimes happens that the rubber rests become broken .or worn or do not accurately fit against the bowl so that the seat tilts and is likelyto break. I
The objects of my present invention are to provide a combined shield and seat rest of simple, durable and inexpensive construction that may be accurately fitted to-bowls and seats of different sizes and shapes and readily and easily placed in position and when in position will Serve to positively prevent liquids from escaping from the bowl upwardly and forwardly between the,
bowl and seat and at the same time will form a cushion rest for the seat upon the bowl, which rest is of strong, durable and permanent character and will firmly support and brace the seat upon the bowl in such a manner as to prevent uneven strains upon the seat which might tend to crack it. My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the toilet seat. front shield, whereby the objects contemplated are attained as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a top or plan view of a shield device embodying my invention, the
dotted lines in this figure show the shield device bent or curved to fit the contour of a small bowl and seat, and
Figure 2 shows a sectional View of my improved device applied to part of the toilet bowl and seat which, is shown in section.
Referring to the accompanying drawings I have used the reference numeral 10 to invdicate that portion of the toiletshown and 11 the toilet seat. I My improved shield and cushioning-device. is preferably formed completeof a singlepiece of'fiexible rubber or'the like." 'ltcomprises a body portion 12 segmental in.
outline and designed-to form a cushion between the seat and bowl. "It is preferably provided near its inner edge with a series of nail or screw openings 13, and near its outer edge with several rounded projections 14: also provided with nail or screw openings. ltsupper surface'is substantially fiat and is provided around its entire outer edge with a small sealing rib 15 designed to be pressed firmly against the under surface of I the seat portion. to prevent the entranceof liquid between the body portion 12 and the seat portion ll, and when the device has i been fitted into position and secured by nails or-screws this sealing rib is compressed:
against the seat and firmly seals the body portion to the seat.
Formed on the rear edge of the body por tion is an apron 16 extended downwardly from the seat and having its front edge-beveled downwardly and rearwardly, as clearly,
shown in l igure 2. The length of the apron is such that it will extend from I the seat downwardly to a point spaced below the top of the bowl. Byvreason of the beveled construction a tight sealing joint" is provided between the apron and the top of the bowl when the seat is closed.
In practical use I preferably apply the device toa'toilet seat as follows:
I first place the shield device 011 the top I edge of the bowl and then the device is l pressed by hand until the apron accurately fits snugly around the adjacent portion of the bowl top, then the seat is lowered and the operator grasps one end of the shield device and the seat and raises the seat and extends a nail or screw'through the device into the seat and'then the seat is again lowered and the central portion of the device is fitted and then secured to the seat in the same manner and finally the other end is fitted and secured to the seat. In
rear of the bowl top, and by reason of the.
flexible material.ofwhich the shield device is made they. need to manufacture only one size and then it can be fitted to bowls of difierent shapes and contours.
Iclaim as, my invention:
1. An improved shield device for toilet bowls and seats comprising a body portion made of flexible, yielding material sl'lb'stantially segmental in outline and-designed to be secured to the under surface of a toiletseat at the front thereof,-and an aprony-pon,
tion formed integral with the rear of the bodyportion-and designed to extend down wardly from the under surface of "the seat to a point spaeedbelow the top of the bowl, the forward edge of said apron being beveled to incline downwardlyand rearwardly to engage, the inner edge of the bowl top, "for the purposes stated.
be secured to the under surface of a toilet seat at the front thereof, the upper surface being"provided Withan upwardly extended flexible rib to engage the seat, and an apron portion formed integral with the rear of "the bodyportion and designed to extend downwardly from the under surface of the seat to a point spaced below'the'top of the bowl, the forward edge-0f said apron being beveled to ineli'ne downwardlyandrearwardlytoengage the inner edge of the bowl top, for the purposes stated.
