To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that PETER GYsBERT THOMAS DE VILLIERS, a British subject, residing at Department of Posts and Telegraphs, general post ofiice, Pretoria, Transvaal Province of the Union of South Africa, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slot Looks for Coin-Collecting Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to coin collecting boxes, more especially removable boxes for coin-in-the slot machines.

The purpose of the invention is to provide for the box being automatically locked after use, so that the contents cannot be tampered with.

Fig. V is a similar view to Fig. IV showing the lock device in the position which it assumes after the box has been inserted into and subsequently withdrawn from the ma chine.

The collecting box 1 is provided with a coin receiving slot 2, and the ordinary lock 3, which is intended to be operated only by some authorized person other than the box collector.

Inserted within the lid of the box and removably held therein by clips 4 is a base plate 5 having an aperture 6 which registers with the coin receiving slot 2 in the lid. A slot closing tongue 7 is pivoted to the base plate 5 at 8 so that it may cover the slot 2 as indicated in Figs. I, III and IV or be thrust aside to disclose said slot, as shown in Figs. II and IV. A guide 9 is provided for supporting the outer end of said tongue 7 in close contact with the aperture 6 and said tongue tends to be moved to the closed position by means of a spring 10 mounted on the pivot 8 and pressing on a pin 11 projecting from the tongue 7.

A ward 12 is pivoted at 13 and is urged to the left of Fig. III by a continuation 14E of the spring 9, which engages a lug 15 on it. In said ward is formed a slot 16, 17, 18

through which the pin 11 projects. Said slot is roughly of V shape, so that as the tongue 7 is moved to uncover 'tl1e slot'2 the pin. 11 moves up the leg 16 of the slot, and

slot, Fig. IV. When the tongue 7 is allowed to move back over the slot 2, the pin 11'accordingly moves down the leg 17 of the slot. Said leg 17 terminates in an extension slot 18 which is substantially circumferential with regard to the pivot 13; and upon the pin 11 reaching the lower end of the leg 17,

the spring 14: pushes over the ward 12 so as to bring said pin 11 into the extension slot 18. The tongue 7 is thereby definitely locked against movement until the box is opened and the ward 12 is manipulated against its spring 14: to release the pin 11 from the extension slot 18.

In the construction shown the tongue 7 is moved to uncover the aperture 6 and thereby also bring the pin 11 into the leg 17 of the slot by the operation of inserting the box into its housing 19. For this purpose the tongue 7 is formed with a downwardly extended lug 20 and on the inside of the housing 19 there is fixed a pin 21. As the box is slid into the housing, said pin 21 passes through a small aperture 22 in the rear wall of the box, and thrusts the tongue 7 over to open the aperture 6.

In due course the box is removed. from the machine, which operation restores the tongue 7 to position over the slot 2 and also locks the same to secure the contents of the box. The disappearance of the Word Set indicates that the box should now be taken back to the proper authority for removal of its contents, and re-setting of the lock device.

I claim:

1. The combination with a coin collecting box having coin receiving slot, of ahousing for said box, a closure for said slot adapted to be opened by insertion of the box into its housing and to close upon its removal ii-om said housing, and means dependent upon opening and closing movement of the closure to lock the same.

2. The combination with a coin collecting box having a coin receiving slot, of a housing therefor, a closure tongue for the slot adapted to be displaced from the slot to open the same by contact With a fixed part of the housing, a spring tendingconstantly to close the tongue, and means actuated upon opening and closing movement of the tongue to lock the same.

3, The combination With a coin collecting boxhaving a coin receiving slot, of a spring actuated tongue tending to close said slot and being displaceable therefrom, a Ward having spring means tending to move it in a definite direction, a pin and slot connection between the tongue and the Ward providing a pin path which, in an opening and sub sequent closing movement of the tongue, pro vides a component in the direction in Which the Ward is actuated by its spring and providing a further path element in which the ward locks the tongue,

4. T he combination with a coin collecting box having a coin receiving slot, a closure movable to open and close said. slot, a spring tending to move said closure to the slot covering position, and means actuated upon the closure being opened and then closed, to cause the closure to assume a final position different from its initial position.
