BAG HOLDER.
Application filed. February 10, 1917. Serial No. 147,875.
To all whom 2'2 may concern:
Be 1t known that 1, CHARLES ANDREWS,
J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of lVinnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag Holders.'of which the following is a specification.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide an improved bag holder of ample strength and durability for supporting a strainer or the like and which may be collapsed into very compact form so that it will occupy but little space and may consequently be very easily and conveniently handled, packed and transported.
Another object is to provide as an article of manufacture a bag holder of such simple design that it may be used with different sized bowls and vessels and which is constructed so simply that it may be produced at a comparatively low cost.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of one side of a bag holder embodying my improvements and being associated with a bowl. showing a portion of the bowl and bag in section;
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of another side of the bag holder and bowl;
Fig. 3 is a top view of the bagor holder and the bowl, with the bag removed;
Fig. 4 is a view of the bag holder detached from the bowl and collapsed into intended for supporting bags of different kinds for various purposes I have in the present instance illustrated it in connection with holding a bag-like strainer. Accordingly, fruit, jelly or other ingredients to be strained may be placed in the bag and leftto percolate slowly therethrough into the vessel and the latter may be filled without the contents thereof interfering with the bag, since the same is suspended a sufficient distance above the" top. of the vessel. The vessel in connection with which I have illustrated my improvements is a well known form of straining bowl. The legs consti tuting a part of the strainer support are, in the present instance, two in number and each formed of a single strand of wire. These legs designated in general by reference character 6 are shaped at their lower ends to detachably engage and be supported by the rim of the bowl 5 on'diametrically opposite sides thereof and extend upwardly therefrom and are pivotally attached at their upper ends to a ring member 7. .In the particular torn: illustrated, the ends 8 of the wire strand forming one leg member are inserted into a. tubular attaching or pivot piece 9, from opposite ends thereof, and this tubular piece'is suitably secured to the ring member 7 as by means of extensions 11. from said piece 9 spot welded to the inner side of the ring member 1n the manner shown. This is a simple way of pivotally securing the legs to the ring mem her 7, but any suitable pivotal connection may be provided for the purpose. The portions of the wire strand adjacent to the ends 8 are shaped to provide stops 12 which are adapted by contact against the periphery of the ring member 7 to limit outward swinging movement of the legs on their pivot ends 8. The lower end of each leg is shaped to provide hooked portions13 which fit over the rim of the bowl, engaging beneath the peripheral edge thereof, as at 1 1, and being joined and held in spaced relation by a cross portion 15. Leg members formed in this manner may be produced very cheaply and serve to detachably support a strainer-supporting means such as the ring 7 in a very substantial manner considering the purpose of the article.
The strainer proper may be in the form of a fabric bag 20 having its edge 16 turned over a ring 17 so that when the bag is inserted through the ring member 7 the peripheral edge of the bag stifiened by the 7 connection of the leg members to the bag supporting means the leg members may be accommodated to bowls or vessels of various sizes. Also, by reason of the particular pivotal arrangement and the construction of the leg members, the bag holder may be collapsed into compact form. by swinging the leg members inwardly toward each other and passing one of them intermediate and beyond the spaced members or the other until the parts are in substantially parallel relation, so that they make a compact bundle, as shown in Fig. l. My improvements thus provide a bag holder which is supported Wholly and centrally above an open top vessel by leg members on opposite sides of the bag Which serve to support the latter in a very substantial. manner. While I have shown a particular mechanical embodiment it should be understood that various changes in the construction and design of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims:
I claim 1. A bag holder con'iprisinp; a holder for the mouth of the bag, members for supporting the holder centrally above an open top receptacle, each member formed of a single length of Wire shaped to provide socket portions adapted to seat on the rim of the re ceptacle at circum't'erentially spaced points thereon, a cross portion connecting and holding saidsocket portions in spaced relation, and an upright leg extending from each socket portion to the holder and terminating in a stop portion and a pivot end, and means pivotally connecting the said ends to the holder, the stop portions being adapted to bear against the holder When the lower ends oi the leg members are swung outwardly and the leg members adapted to swing inwardly into close relation to the holder.
2-. A. bag holder comprising a holder for themouth of the bag, Wire legmembers for supporting the bag centrally above an open top receptacle, each member formed of a single piece of wire bent to provide a pair of socket-like portions adapted to seat on the rim of said receptacle and having a media-l portion adapted to hold said socket like portions in laterally spaced relation, the end portions ol the wire extending up Wardly from said socket portions in laterally spaced relation to the holder and terminating in laterally bent pivotal. ends, and means pivot-ally connecting said ends to the holder.
