application filed 1t ovember the production of meclianics level, embodying certain novel features of construction and Varrangement of parts, rendering it thoroughly dependable and accurate and instantly readable.
Furthermore, my invention contemplates mechanics level which is instantly readable from either side or from above.
Still another object of the invention is the production of a level embodying improved adjusting means.
eltill another object of the invention is the production of an improved mechanics level, simple and inexpensive in construction, yet durable, accurate, and thoroughly depend able;
rlhese and other objects and advantages l successfully attain in the embodiment hereinafter described, defined in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying` drawings, which form a part of this application and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views, of which,
l? ig. 1 is a fragmentary central, vertical section of the level, constructed in accordance I with the invention, and
lig. 2 is a. fragmentary plan thereof, a part being shown in horizontal section.
lWhile l have illustrated and hereinafter described a preferred embodiment of the invention, l would not be understood as being limited to such specific construction, for various alterations and modifications may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts herein disclosed without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
ltteferring now to the illustrations, the device consists, essentially, of a straight-edged body or stock, 3, having an intermediate transverse circular opening, 4, in which li insert a short bushing, 5, within which is rotatably mounted a cylindrical ring G, at one end of which is a flat ring, 7, preferably an integral part of the ring, 6, and carrying a distance from its free edge a flange, 8,

spaced a distance from,` and krelatively shorter than, the flat ring, 6.
longitudinal displacement of the rings. 6, .L revented by retaining rings, u, at the ends of the bushing, 5.
The upper edge of the stoclr, 3, is slotted, as at 10, into the opening, 4.-, the portion of the bushing, 5, and ring, 6, co-incident with the slot, 10, being cut away to reveal the flange, 8, as clearly shown in Figure 1. 'llhe slot is preferably covered by a flush escutchcon plate, 11, suitably secured to the stock and provided with an intermediate slot, 12, cao-incident with the slot, 10, and below the plate, 11, is a transparent plate, 13, enlbedded in a gain in the stock to prevent the entrance of i'oreign material through the slot, 10. @n opposite sides of the stock are transparent plates, le, which close the opening, l, and are secured in gains, 15, in the stock by means of retaining rings, 16, suitably secured to the stock.
Extending co-axially through the ring, G, is a spindle, 17, having its ends rotatably supported by the transparent plates, ltgthe said spindle, 17, carries indicating hands, 18, the lower ends of which are counterweighted, as at 19. The said hands are positioned on opposite sides of the ring', 7, and register with scales, 20, on both sides of the ring, 7, and preferably graduated in degrees reading in both directions 90 degrees from Zero at the top and bottom.
rlhe end portion of one of the hands, 18, is bent laterally, as at 21, to swing in the space between the ring, 6, and flange, 8, the periphery of the flange, 8, being provided with a graduated scale, 22, co-incident with the slot, 10.
lt will now be clear that the counterweighted hands, 18, always point directly upwardly, and when used as a level the scale may be instantly read from either side, or downwardly through the slot, 10, and when used as a plum with the stock turned at right angles so that its bottom edge, properly speaking, is vertically disposed, the scale may be read from either side.
l provide simple adjusting means, preferably consisting of a toothed segment, 23, secured to the ring, 6, and projecting radially through a slot, 24, in the bushing, 5, and into a notch, 25, in the stock, communicating with the opening, 4. rlhe segment, 23, is intermeshed with a worm, 26, positioned groove, 3i, in the shank, 27.
in the notch, 25, and having a shank, 27, rotatable in a bore, 28, in the stock, conimunicating with the notch, 25, the upper end portion of the shank, 27, being provided with a slotted head, 29, counter-sunk in the escutcheon plate.
Longitudinal movement of the worm is prevented by a suitable member, 30, embedded in the stock below the esoutcheon plate, and projecting into an annular By means of this construction, the graduated circular members within the bushing may be accurately adjusted in either direction by rotation of the worm in the proper direcL tion.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as'new and desire to secure by Letters Patent oithe United States is:
A device of the class described comprising a stock having an opening therein, a cylindrical ring in the opening, a lat ring adjacent one end ot' the cylindrical ring, a lateral annular flange on the iiat ring, disposed within and spaced from the cylindrical ring, counterweighted hands pivoted coaxially with the rings and positioned on opposite sides of the flat ring, indicating points onlfthe flat ring with which the hands register, one of said hands having a horizontal portion to swing in the space between the flange and cylindrical ring, and indicating points on the periphery of the flange with which said horizontal hand portion registers.v
2. A device of the class described comprising a stock having an opening therein, a cylindrical ring in the opening, a iiat ring adjacent one end of the cylindrical ring, :i lateral annular flange on the fiat ring, disposed within and spaced iroin the cylindrical ring, connterweighted hands pivoted coaXially with the rings and positioned on opposite sides of the iiat ring, indicating points on the iiat ring with which the hands register, one of said hands having a hori zontal portion to swing in the space bctween the iiange and cylindrical ring, and indicating points on the periphery of the flange with which said horizontal hand portion registersT a segment ot the cylindrical ring being cut away to reveal said indicating points on the liange.
3. A device of the class described comprising a stock having an opening therein, a cylindrical ring in the opening, a iiat ring adjacent one end of the cylindrical ring, a lateral annular flange on the iiat ring, disposed within and spaced from the cylindrical ring, counterweighted hands pivoted coaxially with the rings and positioned on opposite sides of the fiat ring, indicating points on the fiat ring with which the hands register, one of said hands having a horizontal portion to swing in the space between the flange and cylindrical ring, and indicating points on the periphery of the {iange with which said horizontal hand portion registers, a segment of the cylindrical ring being out away to reveal said indicating points on the iiange, and the stock having an upper observation opening coincident with said cut away segment.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of October, 1920.
