BHHHH,
Application filed April at, 19581. Serial No. teases.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JO N MOGINNIS and JOHN N. GRABER, citizens of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brushes; and we do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-
Fig. 1 a side view of a brush constructed in accordance with our invention. 1E ltig. 2 a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3 a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 enlarged.
This invention relates to improvement in brushes and particularly to brushes of disklike type commonly utilized in polishingmachines, that is, adapted to be mounted on a spindle to be rotated therewith. The object of this invention is to provide means for firmly holding the bristles and to simplify the construction of the brushes, and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out our invention, the bristles 5, of whatever material desired, are arranged transversely upon a strip 6 of tape to which they are stitched together on a central line. A strip of bristles, thus connected together and corresponding in length to the circumference of the circle of the brush desired, is folded on the central line, over a wire-ring 8, the ends of which may be welded, twisted together, or otherwise firmly secured, and the bristles thus folded around the wire are inserted between two plates 9 and 10, these plates having offset-flanges 11 and 12-, providing an annular-groove for the reception of the bristles, and these flanges are fluted or formed with inward projections forming a series of radial pockets. The central portion of one of the disks is formed with a series of slots 13, and the other with a series of tongues 14 adapted to pass through the slots 13 and to be turned downon the opposite sides, so as to firmly connect the two disks together and clamp the bristles between them. The central portions of the disks are cut away to form a clearance-opening 15 of suitable size to permit the brush to be mounted upon a spindle.
These brushes are used in the usual way of polishing brushes, and two or more brushes may be arranged so as to increase the thickness of the operating surface, and by fiuting the flanges they will interlock, so that they will not turn with relation to each other, and also prevent the bristles from slipping between them. We thus provide a polishing brush in which the bristles are firmly held in position. Each brush is complete in itself, and as many brushes may be mounted on a single spindle as is desired.
We claim: 1
1. A polishing brush comprising bristles folded over a wire-ring, combined with .metal disks the edges of which are offset and fluted, so as to form a series of radial pockets in which the bristles are arranged and means for interlocking the central portions of the disks.
2. A brush comprising bristles secured in transverse rows upon a strip of tape, said bristles folded centrally, a wire-ring over which the bristles are folded, combined with two metal disks having offset, fluted edges, between which the bristles are held, the central portions of the disks provided one with slots and the other with tongues adapted to pass through said slots. whereby the disks are interlocked.
In testimony whereof, we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN MoGINNlS- JOHN N. GRABER.
