UNITED STATES,
PATENT QFFIOE.
CARRIE W. WVILLIAM S, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAPS FOR SCISSQRS-POINTS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 144,177, dated October 2%, 1873; application filed September 22, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1,-OABR1E W. WILLIAMs, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Gap or Protector for Scissors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, which form part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a pair of scissors with my improvements applied. Fig. 2- is a vertical section of cap, showing recess therein, and having securing-cord attached.
My invention has for its object to provide a device in the nature of a cap or protector for the points of scissors, so as to prevent injury to the person or clothing. My invention accordingly consists of a cap or shield, which is fitted over the points of the scissors in such manner that it can be easily withdrawn when the cutting operation is necessary to be performed.
This cap is made, by preference, of indiarubber or other elastic material, so that it will retain itself in position by compression. In order, also,-to prevent the cap from being lost or displaced when removed from its position on the scissors-point, it is secured to the handle by a cord or equivalent means, said cord being made, by preference, of elastic material, and attached to the handle and cap by means of suitable spring-catches or rings.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A is a pair of scissors, to which my improved cap is applied. 13 is the cap, made of india-rubber, and having a recess, 1), in which the scissorspoints are inserted. G is an elastic cord, secured to the cap B through the intervention of a ring, 0, and to the handle by means of a spring-catch, 0. At the point where the ring 0 passes through the cap B I design employing an eyelet, (not shown in the drawing,) so as to prevent the cap from being injured or broken by the cord or ring.
WVhat I claim as my invention is- The combination of the elastic cap B, the cord 0, and catch 0 or its equivalent, all as described, for the protection of the points of the scissors.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of September, 1873.
