GOLF CLUB.
Application filed December arr-i920. Serial in); 434,094.
My invention relates to a 116W and useful improvement in golf clubs.
My object is to provide an improved golf club, especiallyadapted tobe used in putting, which club is so shaped and constructed that the operator may first veryaccurately sight along an indicated mark on the club and thereby bring the club into accurate alignment with a hole into which the ball H 15 is perpendicular to the linel l.
is to be put, and thereafter may swing the club ina straight line along thevlineof the indicated mark on the club, whereby the operator may both plan and execute a putting shot with great accuracy. a A further object, is tocombine my improved putting device with an approach iron of ordinary construction in such a manner that the function and use of the approach iron is not in any way injured by the presence of the putting device, so
that the operator need purchase and carry:' only one golf club for the double purpose pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the same go-lfclub is employed. The handle the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure '1 shows a top or plan view of a golf club embodying my invention.
Figure 2 shows a side elevation of-same. Figure 3 shows a view similar to Figure 2, of reduced size, and illustrating the man nor in which the club is used as an approach iron. I v i Figure t shows a front elevation of the golf club in position for use as a putter,
pointing to the hole into which the ball'is to be put, and illustrating the ball in dotted lines; and
Figure 5 shows a sectional line 55 of Figure 2.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference numeral 10 toindicate the body portion of the golf club, or more specifically the part commonly termed the approach iron, It is of substam view on the handle 13, of ordinary construction.
tially the same construction as that of the approach irons now in common use, the
bottom edge being curved at 11 and its front or striking face being ribbed at 12. At one side of the body portion'lO is a top edge ofthe body portion 10 is provided with. a straight indicating mark lt, parallelto the face 10. r
At the outer end of the body portion 101 have provided a putting plate 15, its face being substantiallysemi-circular,- its upper edge being curved and its lower-edge at 16 7 being straight, This straight edge 16 is pre 'ferably substantially at right angles to the face of the body portion 10, while the face 'when saidbodyportion is in position for use as an approachir'on. .However, when the golf club is being used as a putter, the rear end of the body portion 10 is preferably tilted to such position that the striking face of the putter member 15 will be'substan-- tially vertical, and when in this position the straight lower edge 16 will be elevated slightly above the ground, when the bottom edge 11 is touching the ground. v
In practical use and when the club is being used as an approach iron, it is used in the ordinary manner. and when being thus used. the putter member 15 does not in any way interfere with suchuse. Then when the ball is close enough to the hole for putting,
is held in such position that the body portion lO'willbe vertical, and is also held in such a position that the indicating line 14: will be exactly in line with the hole in which the ball is to be put. Under thesecir'cumstances it is obvious that the operator may first plan a putting shot with the greatest, accuracy, because the club may be held with The exactlyin line with the indicating mark 14. i
I claim as my invention:
An I improved golf club comprising a handle, anapproach shot portion upon the handle formed of metal and having its striking face substantially vertical when the handle portion is in position for making an approach shot, and having its lower edge stai'itially at right angles to the approach shot portion, said putting shot portion having its lower edge straight and substantially horizontal When in position for use, and the top edge of the ap proach shot portion being straight and intersecting the putting shot portion substantially at its vertical central portion, for
the purposes stated.
