Be it known that l, STANLEY l V. Nroraon son, a citizen of the United tat-ates of Amen devices for controlling the raising, lowering and locking of slidin windows n motor The invention consists in the structural features and arrangement of parts herein- 0 J3 after iully set forth.
' In the drawings I Figure 1 is an interior view of a motor vehicle door provided with a window equipped with a controlling device in accordance with the invention;

Figure 3 is a cross section view of said means, the section being taken on line 3-8 of Figure 1.
In these views the reference character A designates a motor vehicle door having in its upper portion a window opening, B, and
- having its lower portion chambered as indicated at B. The closure for the opening B is formed by a vertical sl dable plate of glass C which in lowered position is adapted to enter the chamber B. As is customary, there is providedsuitablemeans for, counterbalancing the weight of the glass plate C, this means consisting preferably of the pivotal arm Dbearing upwardly at its free end upon the lower edge of said plate and urged upwardly by a coiled spring E tensioned to exert the proper counterbalancing effort.
The bottom edge of the plate C is permanently engaged by a channel shaped strip from one end of which, there is projected tongue G to which is secured the lower extremity of a vertical actuating stem H. Said stem extends freely upwardly within a tubular member I preferably formed of sheet metal and longitudinally slotted as indicated at I, said member is secured to the door A at one side of the window opening by screws I and a series of notches J are formed at regular space intervals in one margin of said slot. Said stem is formed of a bar of spring steel herein. shown square in cross section and adapted to function as a torsion spring, capable of withstanding twisting through a limited angle. The upper extremity of the stem is bent at a right angle as indicated at K, said bent end portion having a handle member L rigidly connected thereto, said handle being, in the structure shown, cast upon said bent tremity. The stem is so stressed as to urge said handle member against the notched margin of the slot to effect its latch engagement with any of the notches J with which said handle may be registered. Thus said handle and stem end provide a means for lifting or lowering the window, further constituting a latch means in conjunction with the tubular member I for holding the plate C in any desired position of adjustment. A loop M may be provided in the stem H just above the point of attachment of said stem to the tongue G to increase the flexibility of said stem under torsional stress.
hat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a window controlling device, the combination with a vertically adjustable window member, of a control stem having the nature of a torsion spring secured at its lower end to the lower portion of the win dow member, a combined handle and latch member, carried by the upper port on of said. stem and a fixed latch element formed with a series of notches for engagement by said handle member in various positions of the window member.
2. In a window controlling device, the combination with a vertically adjustable window member and the frame thereof, of a control stem for said window member, having the nature of a torsion spring and secured at its lower end to the lower portion of the window member, a combined latch and handle member carried by the upper portion of said stem and a latch element vertically extended upon the window frame engageable by said latch and handle member in various positions of the window member due to the normal torsion stress in the stem.
3. In a window controlling device, the combination with a vertically adjustable window member, of a control stem for said member having the nature of a torsion spring secured at its lower extremity to the window member and having its upper end bent at a substantial right angle, a combined handle and latch member secured to said bent extremityand p a tubular casing secured to the frame within which said stem is extended, said. casingbeing vertically slotted and having a series of notches in the margin oi said slot, said handle and latch I IHQIHbGFPIOJGCtHlg outwardly through said slot and being urged against the notched margin oi the-slotby the normal stress of sald stem whereby said handle member is adapted to engage in any of saidiiotches' with which it is registered to maintain the corresponding position of the window member.

5. In a window controlling device, the combination with a window frame and an adjustable window member, of a resilient control rod for said window member having one end operativelyconnected to the "ing of said closure, said rod being accessible within said opening in all positions of said closure.
