LABEL-WIPING MECHANISM.
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOE-IN EMANUEL JoHNsoN and CHARLES H. OsLUND, citizens of the United States, both residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of hilassachusetts, have invented a new and "useful Label-Viping Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a labeling machine and particularly to an apparatus for wiping the labels all the way around a bottle or other article even in cases in which it is applied to a non-circular surface, and constitutes an improvement over the wiping device shown in our Patent 1,238,713, granted Augi28th, 1917.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide an improved and simplified movement for a label wiper that will enable a single wiping operation to wipe first on one end and then on the other end of a label while the article to. which it is applied is moving along a path, and also to render this wiper so eflicient as to dispense with the need of any second wiping device of similar,
character for perfecting the operation because the first wiper will leave the label in a perfectly smooth condition at both ends. The invention also involves an important improvement in the means for securing the desired motions as well as details of con struction and combinations of parts.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1'is a plan of a part of a labeling machine with a preferred embodiment of this invention applied thereto and showing the oscillatable wiper as just in the act of starting its effective operation;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of the same looking in the direction of the arrow 2 in Fig. 1;

The invention is shown as applied to a labeling machine for conducting the articles A to be labeled through a certain path, in this instance, a circle. For this purpose a rotary table '10 is shown as provided with positioning stops 12 for regulating the location of the article on the table. A label gripping device 13 is also shown all as set forth in our patent granted Aug. 28, 1 917, No. 1,238,713. A stationary but flexible and adjustable wiping device 1 1 is also shown for preliminarily wiping the outer end of the label L on the neck of a bottle A and leaving it in the condition indicated in the position shown in Fig. 6. It is for the purpose of pasting down the two free ends, of this label that this device is provided.
On a stationary stand is an upright supporting rod 16 on which is fixed a carrier or supporting plate 17. This carries a shaft 18 being the driving shaft and receiving its power from any desired source through a gear 21. The plate 17 has a stud 63 projecting from a cylinder 64: having an arm pivoted on a stud 66. Set screws 67 ad just their position. The shaft 18 carries a disk having an eccentrically mounted stud 24: on which is pivotally mounted a wiper frame 25. 'Thisframe has pivotedto it on a stud 71 a wiper carrying frame 72 which is provided with a head 26 to which is connected by verticalpivot 27 a wiper support 28. This comprises two opposite arms which are adjusted by set screws 29 bearing against the end of the head 26 so as to bring the wiper support to any desired angular position with relation to the frame 72. On this support 28 is fixed a' flexible freely rotatable wiper 83. This wiper is of the usual flexible rubber held betweentwo plates 34 on the wiper support 28. It is shown as having a shape determined by the shape of the surface over 'whichit'is to operate. V
"From this "construction it will be seen that the stud 24 constitutes a pivot for supporting the frame '25 which is free to turn about this pivot and that the pivot describes a circle as the shaft 18 turns. The opposite end of the wiper frame 25 is provided with a longitudinal slot 35 which is used for controlling the motion of the wiper in addition to the motion it receives from the stud 24 and it is for this purpose that the stationary plate 17 is provided with the stud 63 passing through the slot and having its washer 37 resting on the top of the frame 25. The frames 25 and 72 are connected by an adjustable spring 73. The stud 24 has at the top a fixed disk 74 having slots through which a cam 75 is fixed to it in adjusted relation. This bears on a roll 76 on the frame 72, and it is obvious that while the frame 215 is being carried by its main supporting plate 17, the frame 72 will be oscillated additionally about its pivot 71 by the operation of the cam 75.
A second wiper 80 is shown. hung on a vertical shaft 81 over the table. It is operated by a spring 82 which controls a lever 83 fixed on the shaft 81 and tends to hold the end of the lever in contact with a fixed stop 84. The wiper 80 is revolubly mounted on an arm 85 fixed to the bottom of this shaft. On this arm 85 is a cam 86 which the wiper 33 is adaptedto engage as will ap ear. 7
n the operatit n of the device the label is placed on the article or bottle A in the way described in the above mentioned patent, or in any other desired way, and the rotary table carries it along past the stationary wiper 14 to bring the label L to the position shown at the right in Fig. 1. At this time the wiper 33 is in the position shown in that figure and while the bottle A moves along the circular path in the direction of the arrow the wiper is pushed forward almost longitudinally as indicated by its arrow, through the position shown in Fig. 6 to that in Fig. 7. This wipes the outer end of the label down flat onthebottle orneck and the wiper 33 passes beyond the bottle and then obviously the stud 2 L moves around toward the table and tends to move the wiper a short distance in the direction in which the table is moving. Just before this the bottle has come into contact with the inner or second wiper 80 which thus brings the long end of the label further around on the bottle. As the bottle passes beyond the wiper 80, the wiper 33 engages the cam 86, pushes the arm 85 out of the way (Fig. 9) and passes beyond the wiper 80 (Fig. 10). At about this time the disk 70 has turned to such a position that the spring 73 rapidly swings that end of the wiper around and moves the wiper 33 forward into contact with the other end of the label as shown in Figs. 10 and 11, so that the inner end of the label is pasted down over the outer end. This completes the wiping operation and the parts then move from the position of Fig. 12 to that of Fig. 1.
Although we have illustrated and described only a single form of theinvention, we are aware of the fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore we do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown and described, but what we do claim is 3- 1. In a wiping device for applying labels,
the combination of a continuously rotating member having a stud eccentrically mounted thereon, a frame pivotally mounted on the stud, a second frame movably supported on the first frame and having a wiper thereon for engaging the label, and means on said rotary member for swinging the second frame about its pivot.
2. In a wiping device, the combination of a frame, means for oscillating said frame, a wiper frame pivoted thereto having a wiper thereon for engaging the label on the article to be labeled, a cam for swinging the wiper frame about the pivot, and a spring for opposing the action of the cam.
3. In a wiping device, the combination with means for moving the article to be labeled along a path at a substantially constant speed, of a frame, means for oscillating saidframe, a wiper frame pivoted thereto and having a wiper thereon for engaging the label on the article to be labeled, a rotary member having a cam thereon for swinging the wiper frame about the pivot, and a spring for opposing the action of the cam.
4. In a wiping device, the combination of a movable frame, with a wiper frame pivoted thereto and having a wiper thereon for engaging the label, a rotary adjustable cam for oscillating said wiper frame, and an adjustable stud, the first named frame having a guiding surface engaging said. stud, whereby the position of the first frame is controlled by the position of the stud.
5. In a wiping device, the combination of a movable frame, a wiper frame pivoted thereto and having a wiper thereon for engaging the label, a rotary cam, and adjustable stud, the first named frame having a guiding surface engaging said stud, said cam being adjustable, and adjustable yielding means for holding the wiper frame against the cam.
6. In a wiping device, the combination with a frame having a wiper movably mounted thereon for engaging the label, and a rotary member having a stud eccentrically mounted thereon, said frame being pivotally mounted on the stud, said frame having a.longitudinal slot the central line of which is in alinement with said stud, of a fixed but adjustable stud projecting into said slot for controlling the pivotal motion of said frame about the first named stud.
'7. In a wiping device, the combination with a frame having a wiper movably mounted thereon for engaging the label, and a rotary member having a stud eccentrically mounted thereon, said frame being pivotally mounted on the stud, said frame having a slot, of a fixed but adjustable stud projecting into said slot for controlling the pivotal motion of said frame about the first named stud, a cam mounted on the first named stud, and means whereby the cam moves the wiper relatively to said frame.
8. In a label wiping device, the combination of a disk, a stud eccentrically mounted thereon, a cam carried by and rotatable with said eccentric stud, a frame oscillatable by said stud, and a wiper frame pivotally mounted on said frame and having means for transmitting a motion to it about its pivot from said cam.
9. In a labeling machine, the combination with a traveling support for an article to be labeled and a stationary preliminary wiper, of a movable wiper located on one side of the article, means for operating said movable wiper for pasting down the end of the label on the other side of said article, and a second wiper located on said other side of the article in position to smooth down that part of the label near its end but not the extreme end.
10. In a labeling machine, the combination with a traveling support for an article to be labeled and a stationary adjustable preliminary wiper, of a movable wiper sup ported on one side of the article to be labeled, means for operating said movable wiper for pasting down the end of the label on the other side and at the rear of said article and a yielding wiper on said other side of the article adapted to bring that end of the label around into position for said movable wiper to engage it.
11. In a labeling machine, the combination of a movable wiper supported onrone side of the article to be labeled, means for operating said movable wiper for pasting down the end of the label on the other side of said article, and a wiper on said other side of the article adapted to bring that end of the label around into position for said movable wiper to engage it.
12. In a labeling machine, the combination of a movable wiper located on one side of the article, means for operating said movable wiper for pasting down the end of the label on the other side of said article, and a second wiper located on said other side of the article in position to smooth down that part of the label near its end.
13. In a labeling machine, the combination with a traveling support for an article to be labeled and a stationary preliminary wiper, of a movable wiper located on. one

15. In a labeling machine, the combination with a movable support for the article to be labeled, of a preliminary wiper for wiping on the main part of the label and leaving the end thereof projecting rearwardly from the article, a movable wiper, and means for moving said movable wiper in a path forwardly in the same general direction as the article and then back across the path of the article so as to contact therewith.
16. In a labeling machine, the combina tion with a movable support for the article to be labeled, of a preliminary wiper for wiping on the main part of the label and leaving the end thereof projecting rearwardly from the article, with a movable wiper, and means for moving said movable wiper in a curved orbit to engage said end and paste it down.
1'7. In a labeling machine, the combination with means for continuously moving the article to be labeled along a path in one direction and keeping the same side forward, of a wiper, and means for moving the wiper across the path of travel of the article and into contact with the rear side thereof.

In a labeling machine, the combina tion with a movable support for the article to be labeled, of a movable wiper, and means for moving said wiper in a curved orbit along the surface of the article inwardly from one side and to a point beyond the article to wipe down one end of the label, then forward with the article at a greater speed, and finally back across the surface of the article in the opposite direction to paste down the other end of the label.
19. In a labeling machine, the combination with a support for the article to be labeled, of a movable wiper, and means for moving said wiper along the surface of the article inwardly from one side and to a point beyond the article, then moving the wiper forward, and finally drawing it back across the surface of the articlein the opposite direction to paste down the other end of the label and lap it over the first pasted end.
20. In a wiping device for applying la bels, the combination of a wiper frame having a wiper thereon for engaging the label, a continuously rotating member having a stud eccentrically mounted thereon, said frame being pivotally mounted on the stud and means for swinging the frame about the pivot.
21. In a wiping device, the combination with means for moving the article to be labeled along a path at a substantially constant speed, of wiper frame having a wiper thereon for engaging the label on said article, a rotary member having a stud eccentrically mounted thereon and adapt-ed to rotate through a complete rotation with said member, said frame being pivotally mounted on the stud and means for swinging the frame about the pivot.
22. In a wiping device, the combination with means for moving the article to be labeled along a path, of a wiper frame having a wiper thereon for engaging the label on said article, an eccentric continuously rotating stud on which said frame is pivotally mounted, and means for guiding the wiper frame at another point.
In a wiping device, the combination of a wiper frame having a wiper f ereon for engaging the label. a member but stud mounted thereon, said frame being pi. otally mounted on the stud, and a rotary member having an eccentric stud thereon, said wiper frame having a guiding surface engaging said second stud, whereby the motion of the wiper is controlled by the rotary member.
24. In a wiping device, the combination with a wiper frame having a wiper thereon for engaging the label, and member having a stud mounted thereon, said frame being pivotally mounted on the stud, said wiper frame having a longtudinal slot the central line of which is in alinement with said stud, of a rotary member and an eccentric stud on the rotary member projecting into said slot for controlling the pivotal motion of said wiper frame about the first named stud.
25. In a wiping device, the combination of a wiper frame having a wiper thereon for engaging the label, a member having a stud mounted thereon, said frame being pivotally mounted on the stud, and a rotary member having an eccentric stud thereon, said wiper frame having a guiding surface engaging said second stud, whereby the motion of the wiper is controlled by the rotary member, with. a second wiper frame having a wiper thereon movable in a curved path for engaging the same label.
26. In a tion with a support for holding in fixed position upon it an article to be labeled, of a movable wiper, means for operating said movable wiper for first pasting down one end of the label and then the other, and a econd "Lovable wiper adapted to operate near the last end of the label to be pasted down.
27. In a labeling machine, the combina tion with a traveling support for an article to be labeled and a preliminary wiper, of a movable wiper located on one side of the ticle, means for operating said movable wiper for pastlng down the end of the label labeling machine, the combiuae on the other side of said article and a sec- 0nd wiper located on the other side of the article.
28. A wiper for a labeling machine comprising a frame pivoted on a pivot which is rotatable about an external center, and having another support and a wiper holder pivotally mounted on said frame.
29. A wiper for a labeling machine comprising an oscillatable frame, a wiper holder pivoted to said frame on an axis parallel with the axis about which the frame oscillates, and means for adjusting said holder about its pivot and holding it in adjusted position.
30. in a labeling machine, the combina tion with. a movable support for the article to be labeled, of a movable wiper, and means for moving said wiper in a path forwardly in the same general direction as the article and then back across the path of the article so as to contact therewith.
31. In a labeling machine, the combination with a movable support for the article to be labeled, of'a movable wiper and means for moving said wiper always forwardly along a curved non-circular orbit to engage said article on its rear surface.
