To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN B. CALHOUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Apollo, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends generally improvements in that class of inventions known as buckles, buttons and clasps and more particularly'relates to a package tie.

The invention has for its primary aim and object to provide a device of the above mentioned character designed to be arranged about a package of letters, etc., for retain ing the letters together s'o'that they may be easily transmitted through the mails, the construction being such that after the package reaches its destination the device may be readily detached and subsequently used about another package.

More particularly the present invention contemplates the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein a flexible strap like body is employed and carries a loop at one end through which is adjustably engaged the opposite portion of the strap while the opposite portion of said strap is formed with a series of openings in which is adjustably engaged a fastener through which the free portion of the strap held by the fastener.

It is a more specific object of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character wherein the fastener is of an improved construction and is designed to engage one of the openings and to also frictionally engage the free portion of the strap subsequent to the adjustment thereof to prevent accidental disengagement of the device.

It is an additional object of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose and inexpensive in manufacture.

Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth.

The invention accordin 'ly consists in the features of construction, t e combination of elements and the arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device applied about a package of letters.

Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device when detached.

Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of the fastener.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts. 7 Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings there is provided an improved package tie in the present in stance composed of a straplike flexible body 1 formed desirably of leather, one end of which is folded upon. itself as at 2 and engaged with the rectangular loop 3, the free folded portion being secured to the main portion through the instrumentality of suit-- able fasteners, such as rivets 4, to consequently anchor the loop in position. One portion of the strap is provided near one side edge with a longitudinal series of openings 5 in which is engaged the improved fastener generally designated by the numeral 6. In the present instance this fastener is in the form of a rectangular open loop which is formed from a single piece of metal comprising in effect a flat body 7 the terminals of which are bent upwardly and inwardly to provide hooks 8 which are spaced from each other and sharpened to form points 9. One of these hooks 8 forming a part of the loop shaped fastener 6 is engaged in any one of the openings for a purpose that will presently appear.

In use, assuming that the device has been assembled in the manner described, the strap like flexible body 1 is wrapped about a pack- I age 10 of letters and preferably transversely thereof, the free portion of the strap being inserted through the loop 3 and reversely folded while the extreme free portion 11 is inserted through the loop shaped fastener 6. In this connection it is to be appreciated that the loop is only slightly longer than the width of the free portion 11 of the strap like body so that subsequent to the desired adjustment or tightening of the strap like body 1, said loop shaped fastener is swung downwardly, one of the hooksl 8, which forms a part of the loop, forming a pivot (us-l while the inner surface of the opposite hook 8, which also forms a part of the loop, serves to frictionally engage the opposite adjacent side edge of the free portion 11 of the strap like body and in this manner holds the strap like body about the package 10 and prevents accidental disengagement thereof until the package reaches its destination, at which time the strap like body may be readily re moved by swinging the fastener so that it will lie transversely of the free portion 11 and thensliding the strap from engagement with the loop, permitting of the subsequent use thereof in a similar manner. If desired the hook 8 may be disengaged from the opening 5 at the time it is desired to remove thev device from position. It is also to be understood that either one of the hooks 8 may be adjustably engaged in any one of the openings 5 when the device is being applied.

It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.

As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this inven tion could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all mat ter contained in the above description or shown in theaccompanying drawings shall be interpreted as, illustrative and not in a limited sense. Itis also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of languagemight be said to fall therebetween.

What is claimed is:

1. A package tie of the character'described comprising a strap like flexible body, a loop carried by one end thereof, one portion of the strap being formed with a series of openings, an open loop shaped fastener adjustably engaged in any one of the openings, the strap like body being adapted for transverse positioning about a package and the free portion of the strap like body being inserted through the stationary loop and finally passed through the loop shaped fastener and frictionally engaged by the latter to prevent accidental displacement.

A package tie comprising an elongated strap like flexible body, a hook carried by one end of the body, a portion of'th'e strap being formed-with a longitudinal series of any one of the openings inthe strap like" body, while the free portion of the strap is inserted through said loop shaped fastener and subsequently engaged by the opposite hook so as to be held against accidentaldis- V placement. 1
