l' if! l SWW @bmw/@V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARVEN KELLEY, OF LULING, TEXAS.
SIGNALING-BOILER.
Application filed october 25, 191s.
To all fr0/wm t may concern:
Be it known that I, MARVEN KELLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Luling, in the county of Caldwell and State of Texas, have invented new and usetul Improvements in Signaling-Boilers, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention comprehends generally improvements in domestic cooking vessels, and more particularly has reference to a signaling boiler.
This invention has for its primary object to provide a device of the above mentioned character wherein combined testing and outlet closing means is employed and is normally disposed in a set position above a potato or other vegetable which is being cooked, while acting in conjunction therewith is improved resilient means for normally exerting a pressure on the testing means so that the testing means will penetrate the vegetable when the latter has become sufficiently cooked and at the time the testing means moves downwardly, the steam outlets will be closed so that the steam within the body will be directed through the signaling means, such as a whistle in the top or lid on the body, thus indicating the fact that the vegetables within the boiler are properly cooked.
It is a more specific object of this invention to construct the body of the boiler in a novel form so that potatoes or other vegetables may be properly supported therein, to also provide a combined tester and steam outlet closure of novel configuration and to also provide a lid of the improved construction for removably closing the body "for operably supporting the testing and closing means.
Among the other aims and object-s oi this invention may be recited the provision oi a device of the character described with a view to compactness, and in which the number of. parts are few, the construction simple and the cost of production low and the efliciency high.
Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a -clear understanding of the invention shouldbe considered in connection with-the accompanying drawings torming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4, 1920.
Serial No. 259,687'` a convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction andl arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the principle of operation of the various parts.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, -in which :M-
Figure l is a vertical sectional view ot the device showing the parts'arranged in a set position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts arranged in a signaling position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective detail of the combined tester outlet closure.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the body with the lid removed.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more'particularly to the accompanying drawings there is provided a cylindrical body l having a transverse partition 2 therein which divides the body into a water chamber or compartment 3 and a steam compartment 4, the partition being provided with perforations 5 to permit of the passage of steam into the compartment l while prongs 6 rise upwardly from the partition and serve .as means for supporting suitable vegetables, such as potatoes 7. The partition is formed with an opening 8 about which is formed an upright eXteriorly threaded collar 9 for accommodating a winged cap l0 which serves as a means tor removably closing the opening which in turn permits of the filling of the chamber or compartment 3 with water. A tube 1l has one end mounted in the partition to communicate with the compartment 3 while the opposite end is mounted through the body'l as indicated in the drawings and this tube permits of steam to pass from the chamber or compartment 4; to a point remote from the body, as is apparent.
A hooded lid or cover 12 is now employed and is formed at its lower edge with a depending ear designed for removable engagement with a hook, the hanger 13 projecting from the upper edge of the body and this arrangement serves as a means for removably connecting the cover to the body while the lower flanged edge 14 of the cover rests on the upper ianged edge 15 of the body to provide an effective engagement between the cover and the body. A whistle 16 is mounted in the hood portion of the cover 12 for a purpose that will presently appear, likewise the top of the cover is prowithin the steam compartment t and for closing the opening 17 and the outlet tube 11 to assure of steam passing through the whistle 16 for sounding the latter at the time the potatoes are properly cooked, a tester rod 18 is employed and is slidably disposed through the opening 17 in the cover, the lower end thereof being pointed as at 19 and designed to normally rest on the upper edge of the adjacentpotato 7. An offset arm 20 is formed with an attaching sleeve 21 which is secured to the rod 18 near the pointed end thereof in such a manner that the outer portion of the arm 2O will be disposed over the upper end of the tube 11 so that when the potato becomes properly cooked it will be penetrated by the pointed end of the rod during the downward movement of the rod, and at the same time the outer portion of the arm will close the upper end of the tube 11. Simultaneously with the closing of the tube 11 the handle knob 22 carried on the upper projecting end of the rod will set against the opening 17 to permit the passage of steam through this opening and as steam is prevented from passing through the outlet tube Y 11 the only passage of escape is through the whistle 16 and of course when the steam passes through this whistle the latter will be sounded to indicate that the vegetables are properly cooked.
Cooperating with the`rod 18 for insuring of an effective operation thereof are improved spring members 23 the securingk portions of which are connected by suitable fasteners 24C to opposite points of the hood'- ed portion of the cover 12, while the outer and upturned engaging portions 25 are positioned in close relation with each other so as to engage against opposite sides of the rod, while the tension of the spring members 23 `is such4 that a downward pressure is at all times exerted on the rod 18 so as to assure of the penetration of thev nearest potato 7 when the latter has become sufficiently or properly cooked, as is apparent.
It is believed in view of the-'foregoinggdescription that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily ap arent. Y
s many changesv could be made 'in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention cou-ld beA made without departing from the scope thereof it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense. It is also to be understood that the language used'in the following claims is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
What is claimed is 1. A signaling boiler having a water and a steam compartment and a steam outlet, vegetable supporting means,` a whistle, a combined testing means and steam outlet closure means adapted for disposition on the nearest vegetable carried on the vegetable supporting means, and resilient means coperating with the last mentioned means and exerting a downward pressure. thereon, whereby when the said vegetable has properly cooked, the said testing means may cnter the same to effect the operation of the outlet closing means, thereby directing the steam through the whistle.
2. A signaling boiler having a Water compartment and a steam compartment and a steam outlet for the steam compartment, a cover on the boiler and provided with a central opening therein, a whistle mounted in the cover, a rod passing slidably through the opening in the cover and having' its lower end pointed, vegetable supporting means, the lower end of the rod' being adapt'- ed for positioning on a vegetable on said means, an arm carried by and offset from the rod and positioned adjacent the steam outlet, and spring members mounted on the cover and exerting a downward pressure on the rod so that when the vegetable with which the vegetable tester engages is cooked the latter will penetrate .theV same and thus bring the offset arm over the steam outlet, thereby directing the steam through the whistle, as herein shown and specified'.
3. A signaling boiler havinga partition therein, vegetable supporting means carried above the partition, a cover for the boiler, a Whistle, a steam outlet, and a combined vegetable tester andv outlet closure medium` engageable witha vegetable upon the vegetable supporting means, whereby when said vegetable becomes cooked, the steam outlet may be closed and steam directed through the whistle as herein shown andfspecified.
VIn testimony whereof I affix mysi nature. Y
