A. T. UNDERWOOD.
SPINNING BRAKE.

.ALFRED T. UNDERW'OOD, OF HIGH POINT, NORTH CAROLINA.
SPINNING-BRAKE.
Application filed June 26,
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED T. UNDER- woon, a citizen of the United States, residing at High Point, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spinning Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in brakes, especially such as are used in conncction with the spindles of silk spinning machines, but also adapted for use in other classes oi spinning machines, the object of my invention being to provide an improved brake of this kind which is eflicient in operation, which will not damage a belt or a spindle, and which embodies a removable head which can be quickly replaced by another when the head becomes worn and which cannot become casually detached by any motion of the machine.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
in the accompanying drawings Figure l is a perspective view of a spindle brake constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention, and with the detachable head shown partly in section.
' Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the head detached from the spring arm.
Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the spindlev brake in use in connection with spindle of a silk spinning machine.
My improved spinning machine spindle brake comprises a spring arm 1 and a head 2. The arm is preferably made of spring brass or may be made of any other suitable material and is'substantially U-shaped, com.- prising a narrowed eye 3 at the bight and to receive a securing screw and also comprising a pair of sides 4- each of which is provided with an outwardly turned free end 5.
The head is here shown as of oblong rectagular form and is prefeably made of fiber but may be made of any other suitable material. The head is provided with longitudinal bores 6 which extend to the inner end thereof and is also provided with transverse openings 7, which are short, and which Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 27, 1920.
1918. Serial No. 242,089.
extend from the inner ends of the bores 6 to opposite side edges of the head. The bores 6 are-necessarily of a greater cross sectional area than the openings 7 in order to permit of the tree passage of the spring sides i of the member 1 and the outturned ends 5 of the said arms to permit of the latter being received in the openings 7, but in addition to this the widened bores 6 allow of a free swinging movement of the block 2 on the offset ends 5 of the arms so that the said block will readily adjust itself to properly engage with the spindle;
\Vhen the sides l of the spring arm have been pressed toward each other, their outer ends may be inserted in the bores 6 and may be then caused to spring outwardly and thereby enga e their outturned ends 5 in the openings and thereby detachably and yet firmly secure the head to the spring arm. The head may be readily removed from the spring arm when desired in the event that the head should become worn and another head can then be substituted. in an instant, as will be understood. The tension of the spring arm suffices to keep its outwardly turned ends 5 engaged in the openings 7 so that the head cannot become casually detached from the spring arm as the result in any motion of the spinning machine or from other cause. The head bears against one side of the spindle and serves to, by frictional contact therewith, control the rotation of the spindle, as will be understood.
lVhile I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: 1
A spindle brake of the class described comprising .a spring arm and a head, said arm being constructed of spring metal bent upon itself to comprise an eye at the bight thereof and widened from the said bight to provide sides which exert a pressure in an outward direction from each other, and the said sides, at the free ends thereof being outturned, the head comprising an oblong rec-= sides and the inner ends of the bores, the said bores being of a sufficient area to permit of the free passage of the offset ends of the arms therethrough, the offset ends of the said arms finding bearings in the Walls of the openlngs and providlng pivots between the head and arms whereby the said head 10 may swing a limited degree on the ends of I the'said arms. 7 V
In testimony whereof I aflix m si nat ure.
