UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
CHARLES P. CASE AND JOSEPH W. MEREDITH, OF TROY TOWNSHTP, BRAD- FORD COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-GUMMING MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that we, GHAs. P. OAsE and J. W. MEREDITH, of Troy township, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Saw-Gumming Machines; and
we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to theannexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of I reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of asectional view of our invention. Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are detail views of the same. This invention has relation to machines for gumming saws; and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the pivoted slotted bar and interchangeable devices for supporting the plates while being punched or stamped, all as hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A
. represents an L-shaped metallic frame, slotted vertically in front to receive the movable die or punch-socket B, holding the wedge-shaped punch 12 with lug c. 0 represents bearings to the shaft of a cam-lever, I), by means of which the punch is operated, and which is grooved at dto receive a bent lug, d, on the end of the punch-socket or plunger. The head of the.
lever is made with an offset at c to admit the lug. By means of this connection the punch and lever operate together in raising and low- The slot through which the punch-socket plays is closed by a plate, D,
slotted at c to receive a set-screw, F, inserted in the punch-socket, as shown, and brought in contact with the punch-shank B to hold the punch in the socket. The punch works in connection with the lower stationary die G, which is set in a recess of the bed H and secured by screws or bolts I through the bedflanges J, and by a metallic wedge, K, resting between the oblique end of the die and This arrangement allows the lower die to be adjusted to compensate for wear. The lower die is constructed with a keen-edged wedge-shaped slot, L, corresponding exactly to the form of the tool I). The saw-plate rests on the lower die over the slot L, and is stamped by the punch, the pieces cut out, falling through an aperture, m, of the bed H, and thence through an aperture, m, in a plate, M. M designates a horizontal plate, secured by bolts a to the bottom of the frame A. N indicates a longitudinally-slotted bar pivoted to the plate M. O designates an ad justable block, flanged at P, thereby adapted to the slot 11 and secured at any position by a crank-bolt, 2 having a collar, If, as shown. The block 0 is provided with two arms, 0, curved upwardly, outwardly, and toward the dies. The ends of said arms are notched, as at r, to receive the blank edge of a straight saw-plate, and to hold the same during the gumming operation.- For the block 0 a'block, R, is substituted to hold a circular saw. The block R issimilarly flanged and arranged, but, instead of the arms 0, has a tube-socket,'R', in which the saw-arbor is put and held.
The bar N may be swung around on its .pivot, and secured at any angle so that the teeth of the saws may be cut at any desirable pitch.
The dies may be of different forms, and one set substituted for another, when necessary.
The punch is constructed of properly-tem-- sate for wear the punch is capable of being lowered by loosening the screw F. To render the punch firm when adjusted, collars l are placed over the shank and held between the solid collar of the punch and the end of the socket, as shown.v
Having thus described our invention, what .we claim, as new, and desire to sccureby Let ters Patent, is
1. The interchangeable devices It and O, jointly, with the pivoted and slotted bar N,
and the punch B and die G, substantially as 2. The combination of the sliding saw-holder O, slotted and pivoted bar N, punch B, die G, and lever D, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
CHAS. P. CASE.
JOSEPH WM. MEREDITH.
