band saws, and has for its object to provide a saw of such type, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, for conveniently setting and sharpening a band saw without the removal thereof from a sawing machine.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a hand saw setting and sharpening machine which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient and convenient in its use, readily set up and comparatively inexpensive.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel constru'ction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Fig. 9 is a detail illustrating the clutch. Referring to the drawings in detail 1 denotes the base of the machine frame, upon which are supported in any suitable manner thereabove transverse bars 2, 3, in which is mounted a slidable frame consisting of spaced longitudinal rods 4, 5, and transverse bars 6, 7, 8; the latter, bar 8, projects beyond one end of the bars 2, 3. The longitudinal rods 4, 5, extend through and project beyond the bars 2, 3.
The base 1, is slotted centrally as at 9, for the passage of the saw. Pivoted to the bar 3, as at 10, and detachably connected to the bar 2, as at 11, is a bracing arm 12, for a saw-guide 13, which is adjustably connected to the base 1, as at 14. The saw is-indicated at 15.
Mounted on the base 1 are bearings 16, for
an operating shaft 17 which carries a bevel gear 18, meshing with a bevel gear 19, carried by a feed shaft 20, the latter is supported in a bearing 21, and also in the rod 3.
The shaft 17, projects from the bearing 16, and one of the projecting ends, as at 22, carries a lug 23 and also a disk 24, the latter provided with an eccentric pin 25. The
other projecting end ofthe shaft 17, as at v26, has a loose pulley 27, which is coupled with the shaft 17, by a spring controlled clutch 28. The pulley 27 has a handle 29, which can be used when it is desired to operate the device manually, but it is obvious .a suitable transmission means can be connected-to the pulley 27 for driving the The feeding element consists of a shaft 20, which is hollow and which projects forwardly fromthe gear 19, andfixed thereon, byfthe pin 30, a sleeve 31," projecting forwardly of said shaft 20.
Thesleeve 31, at its forward end is slotted as at. 32, forthe reception of the shank 33, of a" feed head" 34, the latter being arranged forwardly of" the forward end of the sleeve 31.
mThe feedinghead 34, is cushioned, through the medium of a coil spring 35, whichv is interposed between the shank 33 and the forward end of the shaft 20. Projecting rearwardly. from the shank 33, is a rod 36, which is surroundedby the spring 35, and which projects outwardly from the shaft 20. The rod 36, has its rear end threaded as at 37, and carries a thumb nut 38, for
the purpose of adjusting the rod 36, to increase or decrease the tension of the spring 35.
The feed head 34, is somewhat in the form of a spear and is positioned in close prox imity to the teeth of the saw 15, so that when the shaft 20 and sleeve 31 revolve, carrying the head 34 therewith, the head 34 will engage in a gullet and feed the saw, so that the teeth will be struck by a hammer to set the teeth in a manner as hereinafter referred to.
The feed of the saw through the medium of the feed-head is such, that said head will shift the saw" intermittently two teeth, so that each alternate tooth will be engaged by the hammer to set the tooth.
The sharpening element consists of a tapering file 39, having shaft'40, which-extends through a slot 41, formed in the extended end 9, of the bar 7. The extended end 9, of the bar 7, has an adjusting nut 42, mounted thereon. Slidably mounted on the end 9, of the bar 8, is a collar 43, through which extends the shank 40.
Mounted upon the extended end 9, of the bar 8, and interposed between the collar 43, and bar 5, is a coil spring 44. The shank 40, has a depending arm 45, and mounted on the shank, between the arm 45, and collar 43, is a coil spring 46.
Secured to the bars 4, 5, is an arm 47, for
an apertured bracket 48, through which extends the free end 49, of the file 39.
The spring 44, maintains the file 39, in a gullet formed by the teeth of the saw so that when the file 39, is shifted longitudinally, and in a forward direction the saw tooth will be sharpened. The file 39, operates 011 the teeth of the saw when moving forwardly but when moving rearwardly it is shifted clear of the teeth of the saw so that the feeding element can operate to shift the saw. 1 r
The means which moves the file away from the saw, is carried by the feeding element and consists of a torsionally twisted or curved shifting member 50, adjustably connected as at 51, to the sleeve 35, and said shifting member 50, is disposed at an angle with respect to the axis of the sleeve 35 and is so set up relatively to the sleeve 35, that when the feeding element revolves, the shifting member 50, will be carried therewith, and engage thearm 45, shifting it, causing thereby the moving of the file 39 clear of the saw. The shifting of the arm 45 and file 39 by the member 50 is had against the action of the spring 44. The position of the member 50 relative to the plane of the head 34 is such that the member 50 will shift the'file 39 clear of the saw in advance of the saw by the head 34.
lVhen the member 59 clears the arm 45 the spring 44 will shift the file to engage with the saw. The member 50, acts upon the arm 45, after the termination of the sharpening stroke of the file 39 on the saw.
The frame formed by the bars 4, 5, 6, 7 reciprocates the fi-le 39, and said frame is operated through the medium of a crank rod 52, which is detachably connected to the pin 25, and also to the extended end 8 of the bar 7, as at 53.
When the hammer of the setting element is operated, the operation of the frame which carries the sharpening element is discontinued, as the crank rod 52 is disconnected from the end 8 of the bar 7 and also from the pin 25. V
The setting element consists of a hammer formed of abody portion consisting of an outer section 54, an intermediate section 55, and a forward section 56. The sections 54. 55, 56, are cylindrical and the section 55 adjustably connects the sections 54 and 56 together, thesections having threaded engage ment for such purpose. The section 54 has a closure cap 55 which is formed with'an opening 56*. The section 56 carries on its forward end a cap member 57, having threaded engagement with the section 56, and which is formed with the opening .58.
Arranged within the cap member 5.7, and operating through the opening 58, is a plunger or striker head 59, which is controlled by a spring 60. The latter surrounds the plunger and is interposed between a base 61, on the plunger and the end of the cap member 57. p
Extending through the sections 54, 55, 56, as well as projecting rearwardly fromv the section 54, is a spring. controlled plunger rod 62, the function of which is to operate the plunger or striker. head 59, for the purpose ofsetting a.tooth. The plunger rod 62 carries a disk 63, arranged within the sections 55. Surrounding the rod 62, and interposed between the cap 55, and a disk 63 is a coil spring 64.
The hammer is disposed at an inclination. The cap 55 thereof is secured within a bracket 65, by a set screw 66. The section 56, of the hammer, extends through an adjustable supporting arm 67, which is hinged as at 68, to a bracket 69, secured to the base 1. g
A rod 70, has threaded engagement with bracket 69, and which receives the arm 67. The rod extends through the arm 67, and carries a retaining nut 71,.for maintaining the arm 67 from movement and alsoin the position to which it .has been adjusted.
The plunger rod 62 projects outwardly from the bar 2, and is formed with flat extension 7 2, provided with pins .73. Thereference character .74 denotes a lever arm which is pivoted as at 75, to a support 76. The lever arm 74 has a slot 77 for the reception of a pin 73, whereby a pin and slot connection is set up between the rod 62 and the lever 7 4.
The lever 74 is pivotally connected as at 7 8 to the inclinedforward portion 79, of an operating rod 80, which is mounted in a guide 81. The rod 80, is formed with a nose 82 adapted to be engaged by the lug 23, for actuating rod 80, to operate the plunger rod outwardly against the action of the spring 64, so that when the lug 23 clears the nose 82, the rod 80 is released, causing the release of the plunger rod 62, which will engage the striker head 59, whereby the latter sets a tooth of the saw.
Arranged in proximity with the guide 13, is an anvil 88, which is positioned in the path of the striker-head 59, and associates therewith to set a tooth as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1.
lVhen the saw setting element is not employed the rod 80 is disconnected from the lever 7 4:.
WVhat I claim is:
1. A machine for the purpose set forth comprising a spring pressed reciprocatory sharpening element, a saw feeding element, means carried by the feeding element for shifting the sharpening element clear of the saw during the movement of the sharpening element in one direction and a common operating means for said elements.
2. A machine for the purpose set forth comprising a reciprocatory frame, a spring controlled sharpening element carried thereby and operating upon the saw when moving in one direction, means for shifting said element clear of the saw when moving in the opposite direction, a saw feeding element; said feeding element carrying and operating said shifting means and a common operating means for the sharpening and feeding elements.
3. A machine for the purpose set forth comprising an adjustable spring controlled hammer, an anvil associated therewith to set the teeth of a saw when the hammer is operated, means for tripping the means to cause the operation thereof, a rotatable feeding element for positioning the teeth of the saw to be operated upon by the hammer,
' a sharpening element operable on the teeth of the saw when moving in one direction, means for shifting the sharpening element clear of the saw when said element is moving in the opposite direction and a common operating means for the said elements.
