CARBID-LAMP BURNER.
Application filed April 25, 1919.
To all whom imag concern Be it known that I, LoUIs E. POLHEMUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miami, in the county of Gila and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carbid-Lamp Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in gas tips and more particularly to a burner especially adapted for use in connection with carbid lamps.
An important object of this invention is to provide a burner for carbid lamps which may be rigidly secured to the burner bracket whereby the accidental displacement of the burner is eliminated as is the case in the use of the usual lava tip burners,
A further object of this invention is to provide a burner of the character described which is cheap, simple, and reliable in use.
A further object is to provide a burner having a cylindrical body portion with its upper portion crimped to provide an attaching element or finger piece.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawing wherein for the purp0seof illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a carbid lamp having the usual reiecting lens 6. A lamp bracket? is carried by the lamp and is disposed within the reiector 6. As clearly shown in Fig. 1, the

burner bracket 7 has my improved burner S arranged thereon, The burner 8 is formed of metal having a cylindrical body portion 91 The cylindrical body portion 9 is adapted to fit snugly over the bracket 7 and thereby be retained against accidental displacement. The cylindrical body portion is provided with an opening IO in one side thereof adapted to discharge the carbid gases in a forward horizontal plane. As illustrated in Fig. 5 the discharge opening is located within a conical shaped recess or indentation l0 which functions as a guide for a cleaning element such as a wire. The location'of the opening 10 within the indentation also prevents dust from clogging up the opening and protects the same from falling rain.
The provision of a single straight discharge opening in the cylindrical portion of the burner permits the same to be readily cleaned. The burner in its entity is stamped from a cylindrical element having its upper end closed. To provide an attaching or linger piece I have pressed .the sides of the upper portion of the cylindrical member together thereby forming a transversely eX- tending iiange l1. The tapering shoulders l2 provided between the flange l1 and the body portion 9 serve to limit the downward movement of the fingers upon engaging the iiange. In providing means for spacing the fingers of the hands from the discharge opening in the burner, the fingers are prevented from becoming burnt by contact with the heated portion of the burner.
As indicated in Fig. 5 the flange 11 eX- tends over the opening and indentation and thereby protects the same.
In the use of my invention, it will be apparent that the burner 8 is applied to the bracket 7 and frictionally held thereon. The opening 10 is positioned to project the carbid gas forwardly in a horizontal plane, thereby adding greatly to the illuminating efiiciency of the lamp.
If desired the screw threads illustrated in Fig. 5 may be employed for securing the burner in position.
Vhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I may make such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts, as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim 1s l. A burner of the character described comprising a cylindrical body portion having a discharge opening in one side thereof, and a transversely extending flange formed integral with the body portion and traversing the upper end of the same.
2. A burner of the character described comprising a cylindrical body portion having an opening in one side thereof, and a tapering flange formed integral With the cylindrical body portion and forming a finger piece for attaching the burner to a bracket.u
3. A burner including a cylindrical body portion having an indentation in its side and a discharge opening Within the indenta- 20 tion, and a transversely extending flange carried by the body portion and extending over said indentation and said opening.
