Be it-known lthat l, EDWARD E. HYLAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented `certain new and useful improvements in Transfer- Tickets, of which the following is a speelfication.

My invention relates to improvements in transfer tickets especially adapted Jfor use on street railwaylines, and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will greatly simplify the Work of conductors on such lines and will prevent unauthorized use of the transfers.

The invention consists inthe combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The form of ticket 6 illustrated in' Fig. 1 is marked at the top 7 with the day of the' Week and month and the street car line upon which it is to be used. At each side, the upper portion of the ticket is marked with the Words East and W'est and with marks indicating antemeridian and postmeridian time, the words East and` l/Ve'st overlying said time marks, as indicated. Immediately below such markings is a statement as to the time in which the transfer is good. The upper central portion of the ticket is provided with a central d-ial 8 having an outer annular bandshaded and marked to indicate postmeridian time and printed with the hours from onev to twelve inclusive. Between said hour marks are arranged minute marks in steps of live from zero to ift -ive, so that the postmeridian time at which the transfer expires may be readily indicated thereon by punching an hour and. a minute mark. Within this check 14 is also line, and,.if correctly used, the

postmeridian band is a comparatively narrow band upon which the name of the railivayand an oicer thereo'r` may be marked, if desired. Within this marking A)and is another annular time band which is left unshaded and marked for antemeridian time and with the hours from five to eleven inclusive, whereby an antemeridian time may be readily indicated by punching the proper hour in said antemeridian band and the Vproper minutes in the postmeridian band. Shaded spaces 9, 10, 11 and 12 are marked respectively to indicate the stopping of a car at a depot or station, any special emergency, a bald-fare and an eX- -tension trip, any one of which may be suitable number below the time dial and marked with the year in which it is to be used. A transferl check 13 is detachably connected with the body ot" the transfer ticket-by means of a line of perforations and is suitably marked as to the manner in which it may be used, the number, the street car line issuing the saine, the date and the name of the company. A detachable refund provided and detachably arranged below the transfer check and connected thereto through a line of perforations which permits of ready detachment. This refund check is marked with the general number of the ticket, directions for use, date, name of the company, and name oi an ofiicer of the company, as indicated.

-ln' use, when the transfer is issued vby a conductor, the direction of travel of the issuing line and the time at which the transfer expires are punched in the. dial thereof, as will be readily understood. If desired, the direction of travel and a general indication as to antemeridianorpostmeridian time ot expiration may also be punched at the top of `th f ticket, thus tending to avoid mistakes auf,` arguments with passengers. A 'trans/fer ticket thus issued is presented on the ynext direction of' the next line isl also punched on the dial thereof-for guidance on future lines. Thus, it will be seen, the transfer may be readil used for all legitimate purposes but illegitimate use thereof is positively prevented. The refund check may, or may not, be used as desired. llVhen'used, an additional price is paid for the original fare and a refund especially adaptedV for use outer annular band 16 is marked with the 'hour numbers from one to twelve inclusive,

the numbers from 'five to eleven inclusive being extended into the antemeridian section soas to permit of punching of said hours either in the postmcridian band or the antemeridian band, thus making provision :for indicating any ,desirable hour of use. The minutes are indicated as before. The unused section pf the antemeridian band may be utilized for indicating the time of expiration of the transfer, asshown.

The form of dial illustrated inFig. 3 is especially adapted for use on day cars, namely cars which start running at five in the morning and cease `running at five in the evening. On this dial the outer annular band is divided into segmental sections 19 and 20, the section 19 bein shaded and marked to indicate postmeric ian time and containing hour marks twelve, one, two, three, four and five, as indicated. The un. shaded section 2O is marked to indicate antemeridian time and with the hours ve to eleven inclusive, as indicated. Minute marks, in the steps of ten arey arranged between tlie hour marks in both the post andv antemeridian sections, and the central portion ofthe dial utilized for giving general information, as shown.

The form of dial 21, as shown in Fig. el, yis ,on night cars, namely cars which start running at five oclock in the evening and run until five the next moi-ning. This dial is identical with the one illustrated in Fig. 3, except that the ante and the postmeridian'indications are reversed.

The form of ticket, illustrated in Fig. 5, is marked at the top'2f1 vto indicate the car lines upon which it may be used and with shading and marking to indicate antemeridian and postmeridian time and direction of travel. The lower central portion of the ticket is provided with Va dial 25 which is arranged to always indicate postmeridian time unless otherwise punched, as most of the travel upon street T he minute marking is also somewhat different, provision being made for indicating to the yprecise details of construction set the minutes after each individual hour. At the edges, spaces are also marked for month indications, as shown.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred forms of construction for carrying my invention into effect, these are capable ,of variation and modification without departing from the spirit' of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited forth,jbut desire to avail myself of such variations and modificationsas come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my inventionywhat I.l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A transfer ticket having a dial thereon marked to indicate both ante and post-- meridian hours and also directions of travel, substantially as described.

2. ,A transfer ticket having a dial thereon marked varound its outer portions to indicate both ante and postmeridian hours and alse in its central portions with directions of travel, substantially as described.

3. A. transfer ticket having a detachable transfer coupon attached thereto, said ticket having a dial 'thereon marked to indicate both ante and postmeridian hours, substantially as described.
