FRED F. GIRARD, 0F VVASHINGTONVILLE, OHIO.
JAR WRENCH AND HOL ER- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
Application filed December 5, 1919. Serial No. 342,648.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRED F. GIRARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washingtonville, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Jar Wrenches and Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of a combined fruit jar wrench and holder with the parts disposed relatively to make handling of hot ars, and the application of covers or tops thereto an easy matter without danger of burning the hands.
The invention embodies among other features, upper and lower clamping members of identical construction, and of proper size and configuration to embrace the jar and cover therefor, the members being connected together and held suitably spaced apart with the handles of said clamping members oppositely disposed, whereby the jar is held by one hand while the cover is applied with the other hand through the instrumentality of the uppermost clamping member.
Other objects and advantages will appear when the following detail description is 7 taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of the specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view showing the device associated with a jar and cover therefor.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device removed from the jar.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View taken through the device.
Referring to the drawing in detail 10 and 11 indicate the clamping members which constitute respectively, a jar holder and a wrench utilized in the application of the cover 26 or the removal of the latter from the ar. As shown both of the clamping members are of substantially similar construction, being formed from a length of resilient metal and comprising a ring like portion 12 and spaced handles 13. The ring like portion of each clamping member is made in sections and the sections pivoted together as shown. The upper clamping member is comparatively smaller with respect to the lower member 11, and oppostraddling the uppermost clamping member 3 I 10. The latter mentioned glampis braced by means of a transverse element 18 pivotally riveted or otherwise" secured at one end to the member 17, and provided with an elongated slot 19 adjacent its opposite end through which is passed a securing element 20. This construction is such that the respective sections of the wrench or clamping member 10 may be opened and closed when desired. The element 18 is pivoted to the transverse portion of the strap which connects said clamping members as at 22. A washer 23 is interposed between the strap and the transverse element so that when the wrench is turned it will clear the rivet heads and the rubber bands 24: which are arranged upon the clamping members for the purpose of obtaining an effective grip or purchase upon the jar and top therefor.
In use of the device, the cover or top 26 for the jar is placed thereon, and the jar holding member 11 is grasped by the left hand and dropped down over the jar, bringing the wrench or clamping member 10 into a position for association with the cover or lid 26. The handles of the clamping member 10 are grasped by the right hand and the wrench turned in the'proper direction to tighten the lid upon the jar. The device is used in the same manner for removing the tops from jars, except that the wrench is turnedin an opposite direction for this purpose. The wrench or clamping member 10 is limited in its pivotal movement in opposite directions by the parallel limbs of the U-shaped member or strap which con nects the members together. As above stated, the device is particularly useful in handling hot jars, although it is susceptible for use with other receptacles and can be used in various ways. The device can be inverted so that the jar holding clamp 11 may be slipped over the bottom of the jar and the latter held in this manner while pouring hot fruit into the jar.
While I have shown and described what I consider the preferred embodiment of the invention, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself in this connection, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A combined fruit jar Wrench and holder comprising upper and lower clamping members, means connecting said members together and holding the latter spaced apart, and each member comprising pivoted sections defining a ring like portion and spaced handles, extending from the free ends of each ring.
2. A combined holder and wrench comprising upper and lower clamping members oppositely disposed, means for connecting said members and holding the latter spaced apart, each of said members including pivoted sections, and a brace for one of said members, said brace being disposed trans- "versely of the member and pivotally fixed thereto at one end, and a slot and pin connection between the member and the opposite end of said brace.
3. A combined holder and wrench comprising upper and lower clamping members oppositely disposed, an inverted U-shaped member terminally secured to the lower member and straddling the upper member, a brace for said upper member, said brace being disposed transversely of the member and pivotally associated therewith at one end, and a slot and pin connection between the member and the opposite end of the brace.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
