LOUKING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
Application filed Janua y 27, 1920. Serial No. 354,4:53.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Hnwnr W. CURNING, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Locking Mechanism, of which the following is a specificw tion.
This invention relates to locking means that may be utilized in various ways, but which has been particularly adapted by me for use in connection with portable sewing machine cabinet of the type comprising a base, on whichthe machine is directly mounted, and a cover i'einovably connected with said base. In some cabinets of this type, as for instance, those adapted for containing rotary shuttle sewing machines, the base is provided with an opening in that end opposite the sewing machine shuttle as a means for giving access thereto for the ready removal and insertion of the bobbin and bobbin-case. Such opening is normally closed by a suitable closure, in the form of a hinged door, which is adapted to be fastened in its closed position by a suitable locking device.
it has been an object of this invention to provide a combination lock for securing the said door in its closed position and the cover to the base, which preferably will be operative to secure the cover to the base and release the same therefrom upon the closing and opening, respectively, of the door.
Another object of the invention is the provision of such a combination lock that will permit of the weight of the base and supported machine being taken by the cover-in those cases where it is desired to carry the machine about by means of the handle on the cover-independently of the door and consequently without strain thereon.
These, and other objects to be hereinafter ref rred to in the detailed description of the invention which follows, are attained by means of the novel construction and com bination of parts embodying my invention as illustrated in the accompanying draw ings, in which--- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sewi ing machine cabinet provided with a looking means embodying my invention and showing the door or closure at the front end of the cabinet base opened.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail, in section and elevation, the section being taken through the cabinet just to the rear of its front end and showing in elevation the locking means between the base, cover and door, the latter being closed and the locking means locked.
Fig. 3 is a view of the corresponding parts looking from the exterior of the cabinet or the side opposite that shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a view corresponding to that of Fig. 2, but showing the lock released to permit of the door being opened.
Fig. 5 is a view of the same looking from the exterior of the cabinet.
Fig. 6 is a section taken through the cabinet adjacent the rear end thereof, showing the fastening means between the base and cover at the rear end of the cabinet.
Fig. 7 is a section taken vertically through one of the fastenings shown in Fig. 6, and
Fig. 8 is a transverse section through the latch bar carried by the hinged door, showing the notch in the lower hook extension thereof for receiving the locking member of the locking device. 7
Similar reference characters indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
The cabinet to which. my invention is applied may be of any usual or desired construction, the same as here shown comprising a base 2, on which a sewing machine such as indicated by dotted lines in 1 is adapted to be supported, and a cover 3 designed to fit over said machine and 0on nect at its lower edge with said base.
The cover may be connected with the base at its rear end by any usual or desired means, the means here used, is shown in Figs. 6 and 7 comprising two pairs of latch.- ing members, each pair including a slotted member 4 and an engaging hook member 5, one being attached to the cover and the other to the base by suitable fastening means, such as the screws 6, and both being so arranged that by a slight longitudinal sliding movement of the cover on the base the said members may be either connected or disconnected, as will be obvious by reference to Figs. 6 and 7 The base 2' at its front end is formed with an'opening 10 opposite the shuttle end of the machine, which opening is adapted to be closed by a suitable closure or door 11 hinged at one end to the base. As a means for locking this door in closed position, I
scribed. nection between the cover and base, that is, the latch bar 12 connecting with members have attached to its inner side a latch bar 1'2, having at its lower end a hook extension 1 1, which is adapted, upon the closing of the door, to engage a latch member 15 on the inner wall of the base by entering a slot 16 therein as shown. After the latch bar 12 has so engaged the latch member 15, it is adapted to be locked in such engagement by a pivoted lock bar 17, also carried by the door, which is turned downward at the inner side of the latch member 15 to engage the hook extension 14 within a notch 18 therein, as shown in Fig. 2. This lock bar 17, being located at the inner side of the door 11, is secured to an operating spindle 20 which extends through an opening in the door to a position at the face side of the latter,
where it is provided with a key-flange or handle 21 as a means for turning the same;
this key-flange being here shown as located in a counter-sink 22 in the door.
A. fixed pin 23 on the inner side of the door 11 serves as a means to limit the re leasing movement of the lock bar 17, as shown in Fig. 4:, and a spring 2% bearing against a shoulder or pin 25 on the lock bar, serves as a means to yieldingly hold said lock bar to either its looking or releasing position, as will be understood by reference to Figs. 2 and at.
The locking means for the door .11, as described, is also utilized, in accordance with my invention, as part of a locking means for securing the cover to the base at its front end. In carrying this part of my invention into effect, I provide the latch bar 12 at its upper end with a hook extension 26, corresponding to the extension 1a at its lower end, and attach to the cover a slotted latch member 27, similar to the member 15' on thebase, and so arrange these parts thatupon the closing of the door with the cover in place, the hook extensions M and 26 of the latch bar 12 will be caused to enter the slots of the respective latch members 15 and 27 and so lock the cover to the base, such locking connection being maintained by turning the lock bar 17 down to its position of locking engagement with the lower hook extension 1 1, as before dc- VVith this means of locking conattached to said cover and base independent of the door 11, all strain on the latter is avoided; the said door in such combination acting merely as a carrier for the latchbar in moving the same to and from its locking position. i
The latch bar 12 and cooperating latch members 15 and 27 may be secured to their respective supports by any suitable fastening means, the same as here shown being fastened by screws 30, and the members 15 and 27 being additionally fastened by having inwardly turned flanges engaging their supporting parts within grooves 31 therein, as shown.
The door 11 may be formed and attached to the base in any suitable way. As here shown, the door opening 10 is formed with undercut sides, as at 35, and the door 1.1 is formed with end extensions 36 to fit into and engage with such sides as shown. With this construction, in case the lower or base latch member 15 becomes loosened or lost, the connection between the base and cover will be maintained by the engagement of the door extensions 36 with the under-cut sides 35 of the opening 10, and this without strain on the hinge connection 38 of the door. It will be noted that said hinge connection or pin 38 is placed in position from the under side of the base so as not to mar the uppei surface of the'latter.
That I claim is 1. In combination, a cabinet comprising two main sections each having latching means and one being provided with an opening, a movable closure for said opening, and a latch member for connection with the latching means of the cabinet sections to fasten the latter together, said latch member being attached to the movable closure to be carried thereby to and from its operative latching position.
