ROBERT L. DAi'l'I-S AND HARRY KAPLAN, OF NEW" YORK, N. Y.; SAID KAPLAN ASSIGNOR T0 ISAAC DAVIS, OF YORK, N. Y.
HEEL.
Application filed May 13, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that we, Bonner L. DAvi's and HARRY KAPLAN, citizen of the United States and subject of the King of England, respectively, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in heels of boots and shoes, and has for one of its objects to provide a detachable heel of metal having a leather or rubber lift forming the wearing face at the bottom, and adapted to be detachably supported upon the body of the shoe, and has for another object to improve the manner of applying the lifts to the wearing face of the heel.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawing illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a portion of a shoe with the improved heel applied.
Fig. :2 is a bottom plan view of the heel with the wearing lifts detached.
The body of the heel is represented conventionally at 10 of any required form and of any desired material, but preferably of metal and as light as possible consistent with the strain to which it will be subjected. In practice aluminum is generally employed for the metal of the heel. The lower face of the body 10 is slightly sunken and the sunken portion corrugated or otherwise roughened as illustrated at 12, and likewise provided with a threaded socket 13 leading from the bottom of the roughened portion of the heel. The improved device likewise includes an inner lift represented at 141:, of leather or like material, and bearing upon the roughened face of the heel' and conforming in outline thereto as shown. The member 14 is initially cemented to the roughened face of the body of the heel, the roughened portion materially increasing the grip of the lift when forced in contact with the body of the heel. A threaded holding member 15 is disposed through the lift 14 Specification of Letters Patent.

and into the socket 13, thereby firmly securing the lift in position and supplementing the cement holding element.
Bea-tiring upon the inner lift 1 1 is an outer lift 16 likewise of leather, rubber or the like and likewise cemented to the inner lift- 1d. Sockets or recesses 18 are formed in the body it and filled with plugs 19 of suitable material. l lolding nails are driven through the outer and inner lifts and likewise through the plugs 19 and clenched against the body of the heel at the bottom of the recesses 18 as illustrated in Fig. 1. The plugs 19 will preferably be cemented in the recesses or sockets 15: to prevent them from being withdrawn by strain applied to the outer lifts. The outer lift 16 is further secured to the inner by holding nails driven therethrough and through the inner lift 1% and clenched against the lower face of the heel body as shown.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and applied, and requires a minimum manual labor to place it in position. This is an i iportant feature of the device and materially increases its efiiciency and commercial value, as the labor incident to the application of the heel. is materially decreased and likewise the labor required to replace worn or impaired lifts when required The heel portion being of metal may be employed for renewing heels upon old or worn shoes.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. A heel for shoes comprising a metal body adapted to be attached to a shoe and provided with a threaded socket, a plurality of cavities within the body, a plug of relatively soft material within each cavity, an inner lift bearing upon the heel and cemented thereto, a holding screw passing through the inner lift and engaging in the socket, an outer lift bearing upon the inner lift and cemented thereto, and holding nails forced through the outer and inner lifts and through the plugs and clenched against the material of the body at the bottom of the cavities.
2. A heel for shoes comprising a metal body adapted to be attached to a shoe and provided with a threaded socket and with aplurality of cavities, a plug of relatively soft material Within each Of the cavities, an inner lift bearing upon the body a holding screw passing through the inner lift tuies hereto. and engaging in the socket, an outer lift bearing upon the inner lift, and holding nails forced through the outer and inner lifts and clenched against the body of the heel at the bottom of the cavities.
In testimony whereof, We aflix our signa- 10 ROBERT L. DAVIS, HARRY KAPLAN.
