ALFRED JAMES WINSHIP, 0F CAMBRIDGE, ENGLAND.
PRESS FOR HAY AND THE LIKE.
Application filed March 25, 1919.
and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n presses for hay and the like.
According to this invention a ram is aotuated by an endless rack of substantially triangular shape which imparts to the ram a fast inward movement, a slow inward movement, and then a fast outward movement. The teeth of the rack are preferably internal and the rack may be actuated by a pinion mounted on a driven shaft and maintained in mesh with the rack by rollersrunning on guides on the rack.
The annexed drawings illustrate a press together with a motor for driving it, mounted upon wheels.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 an end elevation and Fig. 3 a plan of the press; F i. and 5 are sections at right angles showing the manner of mounting the driving pinion. both these views being drawn to a larger scale, and Fig. 6 is a diagram showing the three extreme positions of the triangular rack.
a. is a frame in which a ram 6 reciprocates, the frame a being mounted upon the wheels 1". The ram Z) is pivotally connected to a substantially triangular rack d having flanges e forming guides, as hereinafter set forth. The flanges at the angles f of the triangular rack are enlarged or thickened, Fig. 4. g is a shaft driven by a motor k by means of a band 7' which passes around a pulley k on the shaft. Upon the shaft 9 is mounted a pinion Z which-is maintained in mesh with Specification of Letters Patent.

the rack (Z by means of rollers m which run onthe guides e on the rack (see Figs. 4 and 5).
The material to be pressed is fed tothe rods 9 pivoted to the ram Z) and connected by arms 0 to other arms 8 pivoted to the frame a and having at the ends lin rs t pivoted to the board 1) which is pivoted to curved arms a pivoted to the frame. The mechanism described for. pushing downward the 'inaterial forms no part of the present invention. r
The ram 6 is moved by the triangular rack (I which in the position shown in Fig. 1 is at the limit of its outward movement. This position of the rack is marked 1 in Fig. 6. On the rotation of the pinion the ram 1) is moved quickly inward until the rack (Z has reached the position marked 2, Fig. 6. As the rear side of the rack 03 movesby the pinion Z, a slow inward movement is given to the ram 5, until it reaches the position marked 3, Fig. 6, the ram Z) being now in its extreme inward position. 'As the remaining side of the rack cl. moves by the pinion Z, a fast outward movement is given to the ram 7) until it returns to its original position.
What Iclaim is i 1. In a press a ram, a triangular rack, gearing between the ram and the triangular rack, and means for driving the triangular rack.
2. In a press a ram, a triangular rack, a shaft mounted in bearings, a pinion on the shaft in mesh with the rack, guides on the rack, rollers carried by the bearings running on the guides.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name this 26th day of February 1919.
ALFRED JAMES WINSHIP.
