HEATER.
Application filed. February 11, 1919. Serial No. 276,407.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ERNEST BLACKBURN and FREDERICK Gr. SMITH, citizens of the United States; and residents of Millvale and l i estview', in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heaters; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to a combination heater for the burning of either gaseous or solid fuel.
The object of our invention is to provide a heater of this character which is simple in construction and which may be quickly transformed from a gaseous fuel heater to a solid fuel heater without the use of tools or other instruments and without the employment of skilled labor of any kind.
To these ends our invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective View of our improved heater in its form for burning solid fuel; Fig. 2 is a like view of our heater in its form for burning gaseous fuel; Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of our improved heater in the form shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a like view of the form shown in Fig. 2.
' In the drawing the numeral 2 designates a suitable box or casing, said box being preferably formed of sheet metal of suitable gage and may be provided with the feet 3.
Supported within the casing 2 and in the rear of said casing is the grate or fire-box 4 provided with the grate-bars 5, said grate being supported on the ledge 6 and secured thereto by any suitable means. A front plate 7 is provided with the opening 8 for the introduction of fuel and said opening is closed-by suitable doors 9.
Below the grate 4 is the air chamber 10 and the ash box 11 is located in said chamber, said ash box being in the form of a drawer and adapted to enter thecasing from the side, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1, so that said ash box will collect the ashes, and their removal is effected by simply withdrawing said ash box.
In front of the ash box 11 is the plate 12, and hinged to the upper end of said plate is the sill 13, said sill cooperating with the inwardly projecting portion 14 of the swinging front plate 15 to form a cover or top for the burner chamber 16 when the heater is used as a solid fuel heater which is clearly v v Specification of Letters Patent. 'Patented Mal. 30, 1920.
provided within the heater, where'it is to be used for burning gaseous fuel and said asbestos back consists of a series of folding sections 23, said sections being hinged together so as to fold one upon the other'into lower folding section of the asbestos back is mounted on pins 24 passing through the sides of the casing 2; The hinged joints compact form as shown in Fig. 3. The
connecting the several sections 23 aremade sufficiently stiff 'so that when unfolded into the position shown in Fig. 4 the asbestos back as a whole is suificiently ridged to remain in a vertical position without any other attaching means.
The outer faces of the sections 23 are covered with asbestos fiber 25.
A hinged top 26 is provided for the casing 2, said top having the outwardly extending 1 hood portion 27 which projects down in front sufficiently to prevent the escape of fumes and direct the waste products to combustion from the burning gas through the opening 28 to be directed by the draft through the flue connection 29.
An inner cover or top 30 is provided with suitable openings 31 to permit of the escape of heat where it is desired to use the inner top for cooking or heating purposes.
When our improved heater is used for solid fuel it will have the appearance as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, in which the asbestos back has been folded down into the burner chamber 16 and the sill 13 and inwardly extending portion 14 of the swinging back 15 interengaged to form a cover for the burner chamber 16 and gives a neat and attractive finish to the heater. The solid fuel is burnt in the grate 4, doors 9 being open for the introduction of the fuel and the air for combustion enters the front of the casing its raised position,- the sections 23-unfolding and passes up through the grate bars as well as up through the openlng 28 to the flue connection 29,
When it is desired to transform the heater into one for burning gaseous fuel the sill 18 is raised and the swinging back 15 is moved.
to the position indicated in dotted lines Fig. 3. The asbestos back is then lifted up into until the back takes the position indicated in Fig. 4. The swinging back 15 is then swung back, to normal position, and upon li hting the gas in the burner 17 the flame wil rise up along the front of the asbestos and the heat will be reflected out into the; apartment. The waste products of the fumes escape by the opening 28 to the flue connection 29.
By our invention we provide a very simple and attractive form of combination gaseous and solid fuel burning heater which is quickly changed from one to the other without the use ,of any tools and without the employment of any skilled labor. It is well known that ineertain districts where natural gas is largely employed as a fuel, in very .eold weather the gas pressure becomes low and it is often necessary to resort to solid fuel to get the required amount of heat.
grate, a gas burner arranged exteriorly of said grate and below the same, and an extensible reflecting plate for the burner adapted to be extended in front of said fuel burning grate.
2. In a heater, the combination of a suitable casing, of a solid fuel burning grate, a gas burner arranged eXteriorly of'the grate, and below the same, and an'extensible reflecting plate for the burner composed of hinged sections adapted to be extended in front of said grate.
3. In a heater, the combination of a suitable casing, of a solid fuel burning grate, a gas burner arranged exteriorly of the grate and below the same, an extensible reflecting plate for the burner secured at its lower end at a point in said casing above said burner and adapted to be extended in front of said grate.
l. In a heater the combination with a suitable casing, of a solid fuel burning grate, a gas burner, an extensible refleeting'plate for the burner adapted when extended to be in front of said grate and. conceal the same,
a hinged sill and a swinging front plate forming a covering for the burner.
In testimony whereof we the said ERNEST BLACKBURN and FREDERICK Gr. SMITH'lmve hereunto set their hands.
