lie it known that I, GEORGE ROTTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 164: Ridge St, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an envelop which can be securely fastened without the use of adhesive, string, or similarfastenings, and which can be securely closed by means of parts which form part of the structure of the envelop itself. Such envelops are useful for mailing bulky papers and small obj ects, and for numerous other purposes.

Other objects of my invention will be disclosed in the following description and drawings which illustrate preferred embodiments thereof:

The envelop shown in Fig. 1 has a body portion of ordinary construction having a front portion 1 and a rear portion 2, secured at their bottoms by any suitable means such as a flap furnished with adhesive or the like.

The front portion 1 is provided with a vertical slit 5 which is substantially on the central line of the front portion 1, and which is also provided with a laterally located slit 3 of substantially the same length the central slit 5, and with an intermediate and shorter slit 1. The cover 8 of the envelop has one side out out to provide a closure tab 7, which is scored at 9 so as to be rapidly bent, and has a closure tongue 6.

down upon the body portion of the envelop, and then the tab 7 is thrust through the end slit 5 into the interior of the envelop, and the tongue 6 is then pulled out through the end or lateral. slit 3, so that it again emerges to the outside of the envelop. The line 9 is then substantially coincident with the lateral slit The tongue 7 is now bent over 011 the line 9, and the tongue 6 is thrust through the intermediate slit 1, to emerge to the outside of the envelop through the slit 5, as shown in Fig. 3 and Fig 0.

In this manner a very secure closure can be rapidly secured by an unskilled operator and there is no danger of the envelop be ing accidentally opened through handling or the like.

In the embodiment shown in Figs. 6-9 inelusive, the three slits are now horizontal so that we have a top slit 12 and a bottom slit of substantially the same length and syn'nnetrically located with respect to the central line of the body of the envelop, and an intermediate shorter slit 11. The front part 1 of the envelop is extended into a closure tab 16, having an opening 15, the closure tab 16 being scored along the line 17. The cover 1 1- of the envelop is also provided with a slit 18. To close this embodiment the tab 16 is pulled through the slit velop, and then pulled out through the bottom slit 10 so that the line 17 is substantially adjacent to the bottom slit 10.

The tab 16 is now bent upwardly on the line 17 and the tongue 16 is pushed through the intermediate slit 11 to emerge through the top slit 12 as is shown in Figs. 8 and 9. This embodiment also provides a very secure closure.

I have described a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerous changes and omissions could be made in its details without departing from its spirit.

I claim:

In combination, an envelop having a body portion and a cover adapted to close one end thereof, substantially one half of the upper end of the said cover being cut in half so as to form a closure tab provided enable the said tongue to be first passed through the end slit nearest the said tongue, 10 then through the other of said end slits and then be bent back so as to be passed through the intermediate slit.
