To all whom it may concern BE) it known that I, Flinn BRUSKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Great Falls, in the county of Cascade and Jiltale of ll lontana, have invented new and useful llmprovementsin Self-Soaping WVaslr boards, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to provide means for use in combination with a washboard whereby the cake of washing soap may be held flush with the scrubbing surface of the board to insure the clothes always being brought into contact with the soap and thereby keeping them thoroughly soaped during the washing operation. The means for holding the soap is adjustable, so that as the soap wears ed the cake may be conveniently and quickly adjusted to keep its Working edge positioned flush with the scrubbing surface of the board.

it further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which simple in construction, durable and effective in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.

Other and further objects appear in the following description wherein the invention is set forth in detail.

To illustrate and describe the invention specific embodiment is adhered to, to which, however, the invention is not to be restricted. The right is reserved to make such changes or alterations as the actual reduction to practice may suggest, in so far as such changes or alterations are compatible in spirit with the annexed claims.

through which a cake of soap, such as the cake 3, may project. This opening is made preferably rectangular in shape to accommodate the usual cake of washing soap and the opening is disposed preferably with its longest dimension horizontal. Above and below the opening of the board and secured. to the back thereof there are the plates i which are formed with flanges 5 by means of which they are secured to the board: through suitable screws or rivets 6. These plates 4:, being disposed both above and below the opening are in spaced relation to each other and form a holder or guiding means for the cake of soap 3. The plates 3 are formed with the slots 7 which are disposed in the direction of the length of the plates and in spaced relation to each other.

Cooperating with the plates 4: there is a plate 8 which is U-shaped in cross section. This plate 8 is designed to span the two plates 4 at their free edges and is formed with inturned lips 9 on the free edges of its legs, these inturned lips being designed for engagement in any of the slots 7. The web portion of the U-shaped plate 8 carries an intermediately disposed post 10 at whose extremity there is attached a plate 11 bearing against that edge of the bar 3 opposite the edge lying flush with the scrubbing surface 2 of the board. In the use of the device the U-shaped plate 8 is attached to the plates 3 by having its lips 9 engage such slots 7 of the plates 43 as is necessary to bring one edge of the bar 3 fiushor projecting slightly beyond the scrubbing surface 2 of the board. As the cake 3 wears off on this exposed edge, the U-shaped plate may be adjusted toward the back of the board by springing its legs apart and engaging the lips 9 with slots 7 closer to the back, when the cake 3 will obviously be moved in the direction of the scrubbing face of the board to compensate for the wear upon the cake due to previous scrubbing operations.

From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear enough understanding of the invention is to be had to render further description unnecessary.

The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:

1. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a washboard having an opening formed therethrough, of plates attached to the back of the board and die posed above and below the opening, and a U-shaped plate spanning the first two plates and adjustable toward and away from the back of the board. 7

2. 1m a device of the kind described, the combination with a washing boa-rd having an opening formed therethrough through which a cake of soap may be inserted, of plates attached to the back of the board and disposed above and below the said opening the said plates having a plurality of spaced slots formed therein, and a U- shaped plate spanning the first two plates,

the said U-shaped plate having lips formed on its free edges, the said lips being en- .gageable in the slots of the first said plates,

the U-shaped plate being resilient so that the legs having the lips may be sprung apart to permit the legs being engaged with different slots, whereby the U-shaped plate may be adjusted toward. and away from the back of the board. for the purpose specified.
