Be it known that I. JoEL G. LEMMEm a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new und useful Improvement in Tahiin Machines, whereof the followingy is a specification. reference be ingr had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to sound recording and reproducing machines, including gramo4 phones. and xrraphophones; and particul-.trly feed mechanism for sound boxes of such machines adjustable to autoin-.itically repeat their cooperation with a given sound record,:
at the will of the operator.
As hereinafter described. my invention is specifically adapted for such machines Aarranged to cooperate with fiat disk records, and haring sound conducting tubular arms or horns which move with the sound boxes, and are so constructed and ar'anged that repetition of the cooperation oi' the sound box with any given record is consequent` upon such movement, to an adjustably predetermined extent.
In each of the embodiments of my invention chosen for illustration herein, the op eration of the feed mechanism aforesaid is initiated b v electr-'lealiy actuated means.
I find it convenient to illustrate and de scribe my invention herein in connection with a graphophone of the type known commercially as The New Edison Diamond Amberola, and also in connection with a `n'annnihone of the type known commercially as a Victor Talking Machine." However, it is to be understood that I do not desire to" limit myself to such specilic embodiments of my invention, which includes the various novel features of construction and arrangement.hereinafter morev definitely specified.
It may be observed that although the two embodiments of my invention chosen for illustration herein are specifically diierent in their details of construction;v they each include means to variably piedetermme the initial and terminal positions of the respectiyc sound boxes with reference to' g1ven sound records, in combination with a single rotary cam constructed and arranged to antomatically litt the sound box from cooper ativc relation with the record when it reaches a varia-hiv predetermined terminal position and to t )cn return the sound box to its initial position and again lower it .into cooperative relation with the record; said cam havingthe'y capacity to shift said sound box, throughout thc maximum rangfxfof its` movement, by frictional engagement with a cam late arried with the sound box. but itse ectivc capacity is adjustablv variable in accordance with variations in tie extent oi diii'ercnt sound records.

indicated in Fig. I1, arranged to traverse a' groove in a record 9 on said turn table and automatically shift said boxtoward the axis of said table. The amplifying horn 10 is rigidly connected witlrsaid tone arm i and with the vertical shaft 12 which forms a pivot upon which said box 5, arm (l and horn 1.0 oscillate together.
As it is the purpose of my invention to shift said sound box from its terminal position upon any record to its proper initial position with respect to such record; it is important to note that there is considerable variation in the radial position of the initial and terminal portions of sound record grooves in records of the same nominal size, and, therefore, 1 Jrovide stop mechanism which is adjustably variable to predeterinine the initial and terminal positions of the sound box 5 with reference to any given rec-ord. y
The adjustable initial stop lever 13, indicated in Fig. I, is arranged to limit the initial position of saidbox 5 in coperation with said record 9 at the outer limit of its movement with respect to the axis of said table 2, by the curved portion 14 thereof provided with the padded inner face 15 vto encounter the vertically extending of said horn 10 as indicated in Said initial stop lever 13 is fulcrumed at 17 in connection with said table plate 4 and is flexible so that its free en d may be vertically shifted to and from en the toothed rackv 18 which is rigidly corinected with said casing 1. VOf course, said stop lever may be thus manuallyjad'usted` to any position corresponding wit\ the greatest radial extent of the record-Fgioove 1n said record 9; or it may be adjustd in correspondence with the radial position of any other point in said record groove at which it is desired to initiate or resume the coperation of said stylus 7 with said record groove.
As said sound box 5 is carried across the record 9 in cooperative relation therewith and toward the ax'is of said table 2, said horn 10 is swung in the direction of the arrows indicated in Figs. I and-III; its

Said stop arm 21 has the gear racli 22 mounted to slide transversely in the hood 23 on said lever 2() and is adjusted by rotation of the gear 25 by the knob 26, both of which are fixed-on the shaft 27 journaled ,in said lever 20. The automatic feed mechanism which is arran ed to raise said h orn 10, tone arm 6 and t e box 5 from their terminal position, shift saidvbox away from the axis of said table 2 and lower them to their initial p'osition, includes the cam 42 shown in Figs. II, III and IV, which is rigidly7 connected with the cam shaft 43, mounte to revolve on a horizontal axis and axially reciprocates in the frame 45.- During its operation,

Daring that single revolution of the. `aleeve 117 of the box feed n'iechanism, said box 89 is raised from the record 93 rind. with its tone arm 90, returned to its initial pont-ion, in'the direction opposite to the arrow shown in. In both of the embodiments of my invention above described, the closure of the electric circuit which initiates the operation of the box feed mechanism is eiectecl by contact of two electric terminals, one of which is carried bythe sound box and the other of whichA is stationary except` when nian-` nelly adjusted as described. However, my invention may be embodied in a sound producing machine which does not require any manual adjustment of the electric terminals at which closure of the circuit is eli'ected. For instance. in the form of my invention shown in Figs. XI and XII, which includes a graphoplione sound box 156, (which it is to be understood is associated With the other essential elements of a graphophone of the general character shown in Figs. I to IV inclusiveg)V the closure of the electric circuit is effected by contact of the terminals 157 and 158, both of which are carried by, or in connection with. said sound box 156. As indicated iii Fig. XII. said terminal 15T is a wire loop, pendcnt from said sound box 15G but having the right hand portion thereot' insulated as indicated by the black portion 159 thereof. Saidterniinal 158, which extends freely through said loop terminal 15T. is carried by the st vlus lever 160 which is mechanically connected with said sound box 156, as indicated in Fig. XI, but is electrically insulated therefrom by the insulation 161. rTherefore. it is to be understood that the electric conductors 16:2 and 163, shown in Fig. Xl. are opposite.

I claim:
1. In a talking machine; the combination with a motor arranged to turn a, sound record; of a sound box; an initial stop lever, limiting the initial posit-ion of said box; a. terminal stop lever, limiting the terminal position of said box; means arranged to raise said box from said terminal position and return it to its initial position, including a frame, a feed cani carried by a horizontal shaft arran ed to axially reciprocate in said frame, and riving mechanism for said cam, operative-ly connected with said motor, and including a clutch gear on said shaft; means arranged to shift said clutch gear and its shaft to and from position to revolve said cam. including a clutch lever on said frame, a slide bar on said frame. carrying a tappet, a. clutch spring connecting said clutch ,lever and slide. a clutch cam on said gear, arranged to shift said slide and set said clutch spring to release saitl clutch, a disk on said shaft arranged to bear longitudinally upon said frame and prevent axial movement of said shaft during the operation of said `feed cani, and permit axial movement of said shaft when said feed cam is in inoperative position, and a pivoted magnet. armature detent arranged to catch said tappet when the latter is set bysaid clutch cam; ak spring 10a for said detent; an electro-magnet capable of releasing said armature detent from said tappet. against said detent spring: a circuit connecting said magnet with a source of electric energy; and means arranged to 105 make and break said circuit. including an electric. contact terminal carried hy said sound box. and anelectric contact terminal carried by said terminal stop lever.

In automatic feed mechanism for talking machine sound boxes; the combination with a rotary support for a sound record; of a motor arranged to turn said support; a. sound box including a stylus constructed and arranged to traverse a groove in a record on said support; and feed mechanism arranged to remove said box from operative relation with said record, positively `move it to another region of said record, and replace it in o rative relation with said record inino cluding a rotary clutch arranged to connect and disconnect said feed mechanism and motor, Without interruption of the 'operation of said motor, and electrically controlled means arranged to operate said clutch, including an electric contact movable with .said box and another electric contact terminal coperative theiewith.
