DESK.
Specification of Letters Potent.
indented lll'ar. 23, 1920.
Original application filed November 14;, 1918, Serial No. 262,479. Divided and this appllation filed llllarch To all 07mm it may con/own,
lie it known thnt l, lVlLLIAM EDWARD llis'rnr, a ul't-lZUll of the United States, re-
skzli] at l l 'illiumsport, in the county oi L; n 1g and State oi. lcnnsyl'vanla, have is an end elevation of the desk. a :l'ront elevation thereof.
an end riew oi the upper portion oil on de showing; the top elevated, indicating (llfil ent positions said top may assume,
l l; is a detail PQI'SPBClZ-LYO View oi one oi tllb adjustn tor tl 1e top.
-.g bars and link coi'iueotions "'erence nuine als designate corparts in all the figures out the -lz consists oi a box body suitably pro: e ibly :uljnstably supported on ll by standards 7. The body 5 is proed with u 1' d ledgje 8, forming; a part E the top. it. movable top member 9 is also pwuided .chich may he of any desired struotion and normally eorers the upper L. side oil? the desk in the usual manner.
For certain purposes, it is dcsirableto secure the top niembe' 9 not only in its normal inclined position as shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, but also to hold it in a horizontal position. At the same time, it is, of course, requisite that free access can be had. to the interior of the box body 5. To this end adjusting bars 10 are pivoted on the inner laces oi the ends of the box body, the metal members being in the form of ears 11 that are fixed to the said ends, said ears having pivots 12 engaged in the bars 10, as shown in detail in Fig. 4. Pivoted at spaced points to each of the adjusting bars 10 are Scria] no. 286,213.
oted to brackets ll secured to the under side oi" the top member 9. Supporting standards or arms are pivotally mounted on the inner side of the body and are arranged to be sewing; upwardly, so as to hold the top member 9 in horizontal position, as illustrated in llig. 3.
It will be noted therefore that this structure permits the top member 9 of the desk to be entirely closed, or said member to be plzuvod in horizontal wsition and swung rearu'ariilly more nearly over the seat. In this latter position the front edge of the top nber U is spaced from the fixed ledge 8,
a ding access to the shell? 16 in the top body, and consequentlv to pencils, ink or the lill'u placed thereon. It will also be ob serl'ml that the desk top can be swung to full open position, as indicated in dotted line in Fig. to permit free and unob .-":.1' .ctcd 210C553; to the interior oi the box body.
FY0111 the iorep oiug, it is thought that the construction, opeiatiml and many advaiu tr cs oi the herein described invention will. ag ipurent to those skilled in the art with out further description, and it Will be under- I'llUOll that various changes in the size, shape, propmitiou and minor details of construction. may be resorted to without departing; from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
l-lm'ing thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secore by Letters Patent, is
'l. A. desk comprising a body having side unlls and an open upper side, a top for the open upper side that rests upon the side walls. on at ustine bar pivoted to the body, spaced swinging links pivoted to the bar and to the top, said links permittino' the top to rest upon the side Walls oi? the body ditlerent positions. and means for supportingthe top in elevated position with resport to the body.
A desk comprising a body having side walls with inclined upper edges, said body having; open upper sides, a top for the open upper sides that rests upon the side Walls, ledge on the body in rear of said top, an adjusting bar pivoted to the body, spaced swinging; links pivoted to the bar and to the top, said links permitting the top to rest upon the inclined edges of the slde Walls and abutted against the ledge and also in spaced relation thereto, and means for supporting the top in elevated position With respect to the body.
3. A desk comprising a body having side Walls with inclined upper edges, said body having an open upper side, an adjusting bar pivoted to the innersides of the Walls adjacent to the rear of the body, a top adapted to rest on the inclined edges of the Walls, links ivoted to the bar and to the top, said lin s permitting the top to rest upon the inclined edges in different positions, and a supporting standard pivoted to the body and adapted to be placed beneath the -front portion of the top to hold the same in elevated position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
