Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1920.
Application filed March 5, 1919. Serial No. 280,760.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnrH MALIK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to toys and has particular reference to a mechanical animal which is propelled by a suitable handle and the legs of which move in a manner simulating the movement of a live animal.
In such animals, as for instance a horse, or a dog, as here illustrated, the front and back limbs or legs on the same side of the body always move in opposite directions, that is, toward and away from the other. and one of the objects of this invention is a toy having movable limbs arranged to simulate such relative movements.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel construction, combination and relative position of the parts and members hereinafter described and shown in the. accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing in which like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts:
Figure 1, is a side elevation of a toy enrbodying my invention. Fig. 2, is an end elevation, and Fig. 3, is a longitudinal section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
In the illustrations, 10 indicates the body of a toy dog which is provided with a pair of spaced integral extensions 11, there being one on each side of the body and both being in alinement and disposed below the body for retaining the axle 12 upon which is mounted the wheel 13.
From Fig. 3, it will be observed that the body 10 is cut out at 14 and 15 for the front legs or limbs 14: and the back legs 15, which legs are respectively preferably pivotally mounted at 14: and 15 The front and back legs on each side of the body 10 are connected together by a substantially rigid wire connector 16. One end 16 is connected to the back leg 15 above the pivot 15 the other end 16 is fixed to the front leg 14, but below the pivot 14 and the intermediate portion of the connector is formed with downwardly extending loop arms 16 Pigidly mounted to the wheel hub 13 and on each side thereof are oppositely disposed oval or elliptical cams 17 positioned to register with the two loop arms 16 so that when the animal is propelled by the handle 18, (or its equivalent) upon the wheel 13, the cams 17 will alternately engage the arms 16 and thereby impart the opposite movement to the two cooperating legs on each side of the body.
The springs 19 having one end fixed to the body 10 at 19 and'the other end fixed to the arms 16 maintain the arms 16 in constant contact with the cams 17.
It is thought that the foregoing description and illustrations clearly disclose the construction and operation of the invention, hence a more extended explanation is omitted.
I claim:
1. In a toy animal body having pivotally mounted legs, means for moving the front and back legs on the same side of said body in opposite directions, and a pair of cams for alternately moving each pair of legs on each side of the body.
2. In a toy animal body having pivotally mounted legs, a connector for connect ing each pair of legs on each side of the body whereby they move in opposite directions, and a pair of cams for alternately moving each of said pairs.
3. In a toy animal body having pivotally mounted legs; a wheel for supporting thebody; a connector for connecting each pair of legs on each side of the body, said con nector including a rigid member having one end fixed below the pivotal point of one leg and the other end fixed above the pivotal point of the other leg and having an intermediate downwardly disposed arm; a pair of oppositely disposed cams, one being mounted to each side of said wheel and in register with said arms; and a spring for each arm arranged to maintain said arm in constant engagement with said cam.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 27th day of February,1919.
JOSEPH MALIK.
