Description
W. S. GARDNER.
' 10v CANNON.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 97 1918.

TYNTT WILLIAM S. GARDNER, 0F BOSTON, MASSAGE-IUSETTS.
TOY CANNON.
Application filed November 9, 1918.
To all 10 7mm it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toy Cannon, of which the following is a specification.
The invention is designed for the purpose of providing a toy cannon which may be employed for the purpose of firing fire crackers and the like, the cannon being built along unique lines and having a removable breech block provided with a fuse hole through which the fuse of a fire cracker may protrude, so that when the cracker is placed in the barrel of the cannon and the breech block closed the cracker may be readily fired.
The invention is further designed to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, durable and effective in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
As shown and described, a specific embodiment is adhered to, but to this embodiment the invention is not to be restricted. The
right is reserved to make such changes or alterations as the actual reduction to practice may suggest, in so far as such changes or alterations are comprehended in spirit by the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the improved toy.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Fig. 3 is a rear end view.
Fig. i is a section on the line 1l-of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, the cannon is shown as comprising a barrel 1 carried on the support 2, made of a shape simulating the shape of the usual cannon. The support 2 is provided with lateral projections 3 on whose ends there are formed journals in order that the wheels 4L may be rotatably mounted on the support.
The barrel 1 is formed with a bore 6 and at the rear end of this bore it is counterbored to provide a seat for the reduced portion 7 of the breech block 8. The breech block 8 is circular in shape and at its center is provided with a hole 9. Ear 11 is provided with an eye so that it may receive the leg 12 of an L-shaped member designed for retaining the breech block in closed position. The leg 12 at its free end has formed thereon a head 13 which abuts the ear 11 on the front face of the latter and this leg is of a length Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1924 Serial No. 261,831. I
breech block is in closed position this leg 15 Y rests upon the shoulder 14% and, the leg 12 being retained in the car 11, retains the breech block in such closed position. Raising the leg 15 so that it turns on the leg 12 as a. pivot, moves the saidleg 15 out of engagement with the breech block, when the latter may be opened.
The cannon is designed for the firing of fire crackers and when the breech block is removed, as described, a fire cracker such as 16, may be inserted in the bore of the barrel 1 at the rear end, and its fuse 17 being made to project through the hole 9 when the breech block is closed and the L-shaped member turned to the position for holding the block in such position of closure.
The igniting of the fuse 17 will then result in the exploding of the cracker 16, the eifect thereof being similar to the eifect produced by a powder charge.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear enough understanding of the invention will be had to render further description unnecessary.
T he invention having been described What is claimed as new and useful is:
A device of the class described comprising a frame, a barrel mounted on the frame. the barrel being provided with a bore and being counterbored at its rear end, a breech block closing the barrel at the rear end and having a reduced portion entering the counterbored portion, the breech block being reduced in thickness for substantially half its diameter, thus providing a shoulder, the barrel having an ear formed thereon, the breech block further having a hole formed substantially at its center, and an L-shaped locking member for the breech block, one leg of the L-shaped member pivotally engaging the ear and the other leg lying upon the shoulder portion of the breech block for the useful purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
WILLIAJW S. GARDNER.
