GREASE-CUP.
Application filed July 23, 1919.
[0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL HOUGH and STEPHAN BAADER, citizens of the United States, residing at Atco, count of Camden, and State of New Jersey, and 'hiladelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in GreaseCups, of which the following is a specification.
One object of our invention is to provide an improved grease cup which may be used for lubricating machine parts and which will be so constructed that it will automatically feed grease and at the same time will indicate definitely the quantity of grease within the cup so that the amount of said grease within the cup can be accurately determined without opening the cup.
Another object is to so construct our invention that the indicating means above: mentioned will partly serve as means for holding a grease feeding plunger, against the action of a spring, in a position to permit the cup to be entirely filled with grease.
A further object is to make our improved greasev cup of a comparatively simple and durable construction and so that a constant supply of grease will be fed therethrough and the amount of grease fed can be readily varied.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, we attain in the following 11121111181,I$f61611(16 being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of our improved grease cup,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 4P of Fig. 1,
Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4, and
6 is a transverse section taken on the line 66 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 7 represents a hollow body portion which has a cap 8 screwed on the top thereof, said body portion also having a hollow stem 9 depending therefrom. A feed tube 10 is forced within the stem 9 and has its lower end in abutment with a shoulder 11. A grease outlet passage 12 leads from the shoulder 11 to the end of the stem 9 and registers with the specification of Letters Patent.

passageway 13 in the feed tube 10. The
upper end of the feed tube 10 is spaced below the cap 8 and is provided with ahead or flange Ll thereon. A screw 15 extends through the cap 8 and is adapted to seat itself on the upper end of the feed tube 10 to provide a valve as will hereinafter be described. The screw 15 has a head 16 whereby it can be readily turned to move the lower end of the screw into or out of engagement with the upper end of the feed tube 10. A grease feeding plunger 17 slidably fits on the feed tube 10 and its peripheral surface is in slidable relation with the inner cylindrical surface of the hollow body portion '7. The hollow stem 9 includes an axial cavity 18 which terminates at its bottom in a shoulder 19. A coiled spring 20 is positioned within the cavity 18 and is adapted to bear upon the bottom of the grease feeding plunger 17 and move the latter upwardly; the flange 14: of the feed tube 10 serving to prevent the plunger 17 from moving entirely off said tube.
A. substantially U-shape member 21 has its leg portion 22 secured to the plunger 17 within the hollow body portion 7 and extends out of the body portion through a hole 23. The other leg 2% of the member 21 slidably fits within a notch 25 in a flange 26 which projects from the outer surface of the body portion 7. The member 21 provides a loop 27 and the hollow stem 9 has a latch :28 rotatably secured thereto, said latch including a hook 29 and a split ring portion 30. The split ring portion 30 is adapted to be sprung within an annular groove 81' in the stem 9 so that when the plunger 17 is forced into its extreme lowest position, the latch can be turned to move the hook 29 into the loop 27 of the member 21 and thereby hold the grease feeding plunger 17 against the action of the spring 20; it being noted that the spring 20 serves to move the grease feeding plunger upwardly to compress grease between the top of the plunger and the bottom of the cap and force it downwardly through the feed tube 10 when the screw 15 is moved out of engagement with the top f the feed tube 10. The leg portion 24L of the mcr ber 21 has an indicating finger 3'2 adjustablv secured thereto by means of a set screw 33. The finger 32, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, has an arcuate surface 34, which corresponds or follows what we claim as new and desire to secure 0 the curvature of the outer surface of the hollow body portion 7 above the flange 26. The end 35 of the indicating finger 32 is adapted to traverse superimposed graduations 36 formed on the outer surface of the body portion 7 as clearly shown in F g. 1. Thus the position of the plunger 17 within the body portion'7, and consequently the amount of grease between the top of the plunger and thecap 8, can be accurately determined by the position of the finger 32 with respect to the graduations 34.
When it is desired to fill our improved grease cup, the cap 8 is removed and the grease feeding plunger 17 is moveddownwardly against'the action of the sprlng 20. The latch 28 is then turned to move the hook 29 into the loop 27 of the member 21. This action also moves the finger 32 downwardly to a position adjacent the lower end of the graduations 36, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The grease is then placed within the hollow body portion 7 until the latter is completely filled. After which the cap 8 can be screwed thereon and the screw 15 can beadjusted to permit the desired effect of the grease through the feed tube 10. It will be noted that as the spring 20 moves the grease feed ing plunger upwardly, the grease will be forced over the top of the tube 10 and downwardly through said tube and out through the outlet passage 12. The hollow stem 9 is provided with a screw threaded portion 37 whereby it can be screwed into a journaled box or the like as is the usual custom of attaching grease cups to machinery.
By having the arcuate surface 24L on the finger 32 and the notch 25 in the flange 26, the member 21 will be evenly guided so as to prevent vibration and jamming of the parts. It will be noted that the leg 22 freely slides upwardly and downwardly through the hole 23 and since the grease is positioned above the plunger 17, we are enabled to have the member 21 movably connected thereto without possibility of leakage of the grease through the hole 23.
While we have described our invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of our invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence we do not limit ourselves to the precise construction set forth, but consider that we are at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention,
by Letters Patent is j 1. A grease cup including a hollow body portion forming a receptacle for the grease; a plunger within said receptacle; a substan tially U-shape member having one leg portion slidable through the bottom of the body portion and having an inner upwardly projecting end connected to said plunger and its other upwardly projecting end movable adjacent the outer surface of said body portion, said surface of the body portion having graduations spaced apart in the direction of the height of the body portion; and indicating means provided on said latter end portion adapted to traverse said graduations; substantially as described.
2. A grease cup including a hollow body portion; a feed tube secured to the bottom of said body portion and extending upwardly therein and having its upper end open; a cap detachably secured to the top of said body portion and having its inner surface positioned above the upper end of said feed tube; and a member movable through said cap into said body portion and adapted to engage and close the upper end of said feed tube, said member being movable to vary the amount of opening of the upper end of said feed tube whereby the movement of the plunger will cause various amounts of the grease to be forced between said member and the interior of the feed tube; substantially as described.
3. A grease cup including a hollow body portion forming a receptacle for the grease; a plunger within said receptacle; a U-shape member having one leg portion slidable names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
