UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOHN HUTGHISON, OF THREE RIVERS, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-SHELLERS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,228, dated November 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
"Be it known that 1, JOHN HUTCHISON, of Three Rivers, in the county of St. Joseph and I State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Oorn-Shellers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the c0nstruc= tion and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a longitudinal central section view of my Fig.3isa front view. Fig. 4 is a rear view.
This invention has relation to corn-shellers; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the shelling-cylinder case, the spout underneath the same for conveying the shelled corn to the suctiouspout, the suctionspout fan and fan-case, and the spouts with screen for conducting the scattering corn to the suction-spout, all as hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the frame of the corn-sheller. A represents a shaft passing through the frame A and provided at each end with a fan, M, and pulley Z, as shown in Fig. 1; B, a horizontal cylinder or jacket having perforations b for the shelled corn to escape through; 0, an opening near one end for the corn to pass from the hopper E into the case B; D, an opening near the other end to let the cobs out; E, the hopper; F, the shelling-cylinder arranged on the shaft A and provided with studs, threaded, screwed into the cylinder, and arranged in spiral order or rows so as to cause the cobs to pass toward the opening D; G, the suction-spout running from the fan-case along the top of the machine and extending down at one side; H, areceptacle under the jacket 13 having inclined floors to carry the shelled corn toward the suctionspout, which has an opening at I to let it pass through; I, an inclined spout extending from the rear end of the case B near the opening D. The cobs from the case pass off through this spout, which has a ribbed or screen-like floor, d, to let the scattering corn pass through to another spout, K, which conducts it to the suction-spout. The latter is designed for the purpose of cleaning the shelled corn, which is allowed to escape from the lower end of the suction-spout. L represents the fan-case; M, the fan, onthe same shaft with the studded cylinder F. N designates an opening in the back part of the suction-spout, where the latter opens into the fan-case. This opening is provided with a pivoted valve, n, by means of which the suction of the fan is regulated.
\Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isj The suction-spout G, extending from the fan-case along the top of the machine and down at one side, in combination with the fancase L, fan M, conducting-cylinder F, perforated jacket B, inclined spout H, screen 01, and
spouts I K, all arranged substantially as In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
