HERBERT COATES, OF LEEDS, ENGLAND.
MOLD Fon. CEMENT BLOCKS, cw.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1920.
Application led August 26, 1918. Serial No. 251,445.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT CoA'rns, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Leeds, in the county of York, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Molds for Cement Blocks, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to adjustable or ex panding molds for making blocks in terracotta, cement, artificial stone, or like mate rial.
The invention is designed with the object of enabling blocks of various patterns and sizes to be produced in a single adjustable and collapsible mold by an adjustment of the front member only of the mold box to the requisite interchangeable bottom facing mold, and without the necessity for interchangeable sets of side and end mold box members of various sizes, thereby effecting a great saving both in time, labor, and material. For this purpose the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described with reference to the drawings.
Description of accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a front elevation of my improved adjustable and collapsible mold.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same.
Fig. 3 is a plan of same.
Fig. Il is a side elevation of same in section.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the slotted base hinges. According to my said invention the mold is constructed with a fixed flat base A, and with a movable front B, movable back C, and movable sides D, all detachably secured to the base by hinges F and by thumbscrews E working in slots H in the base and in superposed open slots G in the hinges, the hinged front B being also slidable in a backward and forward direction upon the base A 'between forward extensions of the hinged sides D and adjustably secured by the thumbscrews E working in connecting extensions H1 of the front and rear slots H. The bottom of the mold box as thus constructed is adapted to receive a plaster facing mold I of a pattern suitable for the block to be produced, this facing mold I being interchangeable in various patterns, widths, and heights, and being secured in position within the mold box by means of bolts J attached to a core K within the facing mold and adjustable within the slots H1. The adjustable mold box is provided in front with a transverse locking clamp L, and is clamped' at the back by means of thumhscrews M carried by side pieces N hinged to the movable back C, said thumbscrews M engaging with side brackets O having open slots P. The mold may be constructed of wood or metal (or both), with plaster linings Q, and suitable strengthening brackets (not shown) may also be provided.
The adjustable mold box as hereinbefore described is especially adapted for the production of ashlers, rabbeted ashlers, run ning lengths, and return moldings. Special lengths of block may be readily produced either by cutting or by inserting an end block or blocks within the mold box. For producing blocks having apattern on more than one face, the mold box is adapted to receive a loose upright facing mold or molds, either at front, back, or sides.
On completion of the molding operation, the molded block can be readily and vsafely removedby simply inverting the mold box, releasing the clamps and hinge fastenings, opening and detaching the movable front, sides, and back, and detaching the base and the bottom facing mold secured thereto.
I claim:
1. An adjustable mold box comprising a fixed flat base provided with slots, movable back and sides hinged to said base, the hinges of the back and sides being provided with slots registering with the said slots, thumb screws engaging with the slots, a movable front slidably hinged to the said base, a bottom formed of a plaster facing mold slidably and interchangeably secured to said base, and locking clamps for said movable front, sides and back, as and for the purpose specified.
2. An adjustable mold box comprising a fixed Hat base, movable back and sides detachably hinged to said base, a movable front detachably hinged to said base and slidable between forward extensions of the hinged sides, plaster linings within said movable front, sides, and back, a bottom formed of a plaster facing mold slidably and interchangeably secured to said base, and locking clamps for said movable front, sides,
and back.
- HERBERT COATES.
