ARM-SUPPORT FOR EMBALMING PURPOSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Feb.24, 1920.
Application filed August 30, 1919. Serial No. 320,812.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WADE SHILLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Arm-Supports for Embalming Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in arm rests for embalming purposes.
An object of the invention is to devise an arm rest or support for a corpse during the process of embalming which will be simple and compact in construction, effective for the purpose for which it is designed and economical in manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to provide an arm rest of the character described which may be quickly and readily attached to a cooling board or other convenient point of support and which will be self adjustable to different sized arms to obviate the necessity of special adjusting devices.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side view of an arm rest embodying my improvements shown attached to its support.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same.
Referring to the drawing, the rest consists essentially of a single piece of wire, which may be number nine spring wire or ordinary telephone orfence wire, bent to a peculiar shape as hereinafter described, with the ends thereof connected by a flexible chain. The'wire is so bent as to provide two vertically-extending intermediate portions 1 and 2, two outwardly flaring upper portions 3 and 4 and a lower rearwardly-extending hook portion 5. The extreme upper ends are bent upon themselves as indicated at 6 to form eyes to receive the ends of a chain 7 which is of a length greater than the distance between the eyes.
Threaded upon the portions 1 and 2 is a clamping plate consisting of a central transversely-extending portion 9 having two town turned portions 10 and 11; the transverse portion 9 being apertured to receive the portions 1 and 2 of the wire. The portion 11 of the clamp is bent inwardly against the wire portions 1 and 2, the extreme lower edges thereof being bent imy hand this 26th slightly rearwardly as indicated at 12 so as to partially embrace the portions 1 and 2. The portion 11 of the clamp has a centrallyarranged threaded perforation to receive a thumb screw 13.
Inoperation the hook portion 5 is caused to engage the under side of the support, which maybe the side rail 14; of a cooling board, while the clamp is caused to embrace the upper edge thereof, the transverse portion lying on top of the rail while the downwardly-extending portion 10 engages the inner side of the rail. The thumb screw is then turned in against the outer side of the rail so as to draw the portion 10 firmly against the inner side of the rail and clamp the device firmly in position. The clamp may be readily moved up or down upon the portionsl and 2 to adjust the same to the height of the rail.
In operation, after the device has been firmly secured in position, the arm of the corpse is laid upon the chain 7 and by reason of the resilient nature of the resilient portions 3 and 4 and the flexible character of the chain 7, the device will readily adjust itself to different sized arms so as to eliminate the necessity of special adjusting tallic rod bent to form verticallyextending intermediate portions arranged parallel with each other, outwardly flared upper extensions and a hook-shaped lower end; a flexible arm rest suspended from the upper ends of said extensions so formed as to permit the extensions to approach each other under load, and a clamping device carried by said intermediate portion.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set day of August 1919. I WADE SHILLING. Witnesses: I
HERMAN PFISTER, C. F. FAUST.
