Description

T. OVER TON.
Improvement in Hand-Vise.
No. 133,171, \Patented N0v.19,1872.
Fa 'y- Z.
AM PHOT0-ITI-IOGEAPHIO caM/assannzls maczss.)
' THOMAS OTERTON, OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-VISES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,17L dated November 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs Ovnnron, of Corpus Christi, in the county of Nueces and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination Hand-Vise, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to furnish an implement or tool for the use of mechanics, which can not only be used as a hand-vise for holding small articles, but which can be attached to bits or angers for gaging the depth of the hole bored, and also countersinking such hole for screws.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view of a boring-bit with my combination vise attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a side view of the vise detached. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of, Fig. 1, givingan edge view of the vise.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B represent two jaws joined together at one end bya pivot-pin, 0, so that the jaw 13 can play the same as the loose jaw of an ordinary vise. This loose jaw has a transverse groove, D, so that it will fit to and hold a bit, or to a wire when it is screwed up, as seen in Fig. 3. E is the vise-screw, by means of which a bit or other article is griped between the jaws. F is an adjustable countersinking-cutter, attached, by a screw, G, to the jaw A.
This cutter is slotted for the screw G, and is confined in a slot in the jaw, so that it keeps its place when cutting, but 'is readily adjusted, by means of the slot therein, to cut more or less, and may as readily be removed for sharpening or other purposes.
Detached from the bit H the vise is convenient for all the uses to which hand-Vises are ap plied; and when attached to a boring-bit the depth of the hole bored may be gaged exactly and the hole countersunk for a wood-screw 0r bolt-head, or left untouched by the cutter, as may be desired. I is a slot in the screw-head, for convenience in setting saws.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.- The improved hand implement herein described, consisting of the jaws A B, hinged together, the thumb-screw E, and the countersink cutter F, arranged parallel to the transverse groove D, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
2. The cutter F, arranged in a transverse groove of the jaw A, and provided with a slot, as specified, whereby lateral movement thereof is prevented and longitudinal adjustment provided for, as set forth.
THOMAS OVER'ION.
